What i will say is that after 30 years of drilling holes, i always drill a smaller pilot hole (particularly in masonry) and then step up gradually in drill bit size to the required circumference. This works really well for walls that are not in great condition. Sometimes you may find that your drill bit wanders across the wall and this technique can eliminate this, especially if you centre punch the desired position first. I hope this helps someone.

@@vXSlayerrXv yes sometimes you need to be careful and check for hidden things. Best to have a detector most of the time, near windows you may have a wooden, re-enforced concrete or a metal lentil. Wires should be protected with either metal or plastic, so you are aware of your drilling in the wrong place. So if your hitting metal you may need to change to a metal bit. Thanks

I have just had to attach curtain brackets for a pole to hang curtains. The top row of holes drilled went in fine, but the second row (lower hole for the bracket) didn't go so well. The drill went through the plaster, and then when it hit the brick the bit started to move cutting the plaster. It made a right mess of the plaster creating a big hole, and I didn't get the second holes drilled. Is there a way of getting around this? and did the drill bit move because I hit the edge of the brick which sent my drill into the cement? Any tips to get around this would be a great help.

Putting masking tape over the spot you want to drill helps keep the plaster from chipping and crumbling off. Anything you can do to keep the vibrations of the drill from shaking the plaster in a localized spot.

@@Crobisaur Nice. First time I'm hearing this, never tried before. Any hole I try to make invariably ends up into small Crater, and I just can't figure out why. Some masons are saying the Cement and plaster are old and brittle, others are saying the drill bit is the issue!!!
@jimbokraut640
Жыл бұрын
@@johnulcer Hammer drills much more expensive. They have an inbuilt mechanism that generates a forward thrust motion as you drill. So it's like there is a hammer inside your drill that keeps striking the drill bit as you drill. This means you have to physically exert less force when using a h/drill. With a conventional drill you need to push hard while drilling if you need a deep hole. Think of old steering vs power steering!

Nice video!! I was attempting to drill a small hole in the concrete & brick wall with my drill, unfortunately, the hole turned out a lot bigger than the drill bit. Plus, a hand-sized chunk of the wall itself came off!! (layer of concrete and overlying layer of plaster). Any idea why this happened? Did I use the wrong drill bit, or is the concrete of poor quality, or something else??!! In several places across the house I find that the holes do not maintain a clean round shape, no matter how small a hole I try to drill. Instead, both the concrete and plaster start giving way and I'm left with a small Crater instead of a small hole!! Any thoughts please. Thanks...

If your house is old the brick might be crumbling. The house won't fall down but fixing can be a nightmare. I'm not a builder but I remember my builder father many years ago drilling a larger hole and plugging it with a piece of wood, then drillibg into the wood fir fixing. Not sure if he used an adhesive? It worked really well. I in the same house and hate drilling into the wall due to this. I always start small and check if the wall plag will fit as a smaller drill bit will create a bigger hole in crumbly brick. If you can't create a nice round hole and your bit is wandering your bit might not be sharp enough or your drill might not be powerful enough. If you have an inexpensive cordless drill I expect this is the case. I have all my father's old building stuff, so luckily I don't have this issue.

What happens if you hit a mortar line while drilling? My friend helped me drill a few guitar lounge into my plaster wall recently and he hit a lot of resistance at one particular spot. I was worried at first that it was a pipe but he thought it was the mortar between the bricks and said it can be tough to drill through. Does that cause any foundational issues if you DO drill through it?

How do you check for wires / pipes before drilling?
@PaintingandDecorating
Жыл бұрын
You usually have a good idea.. as you can check where certain things go.. by checking the area looking for pipes, and sockets.. light switches.. generally wires run down for light switches and up for sockets.. but always best to check and double check.. a detector can be very handy.
@johnulcer
Жыл бұрын
@@PaintingandDecorating thanks! Sorry to be a pest but how far above light sockets do they usually go? Like just a few inches? The reason I ask is on my 2nd floor we drilled a few feet above a light socket that was down near the floor (probably about five or six feet above it), and I was worried about the wires potentially running straight up thr wall, but my friend told me the wires for the outlet wouldn't run up the wall and would likely run along the base of the floor to a hollow wall and then down to the basement. But that's the sort of thing where it's like how do you know for sure before you start drilling haha. I guess I'll have to look into detectors that work on plaster walls. It's been a couple months since we drilled and all my lights are still functioning fine so fingers crossed we didn't hit anything. 😂
