I have never done this myself, but Dad had a production job that he did this on his 9" SB. I once saw a set-up tying the carriage to the tail stock that worked out well. Good video, Thank you Lyle.

This can be accomplished by throwing a chain around the carriage and the back of the tail stock. Adjust the chain so there is a small gap between the tail stock and carriage, then you can back the whole set up away from the chuck when done with the drilling operation.

Of course this is exactly what is done routinely on a CNC turret lathe. Thank you for demonstrating the technique on the standard manual lathe. It seems impractical for hobbyists due to the tooling requirements, setup and heavy (extreme) load on the tool post single point attachment that you pointed out. We have just completed 5/8" drilling in steel with the lathe tailstock with my intro students. There is something very satisfying about drilling in the lathe. I think watching the chip slide down the non turning tool is the mezormorizing dynamic that is so appealing. It guarantees the same wonderful response from each first time student. It is a natural opportunity to talk with students about the versatility of the lathe in machining.

I tried drilling larger holes in a setup like this with little success. My troubles were keeping the toolpost from rotating under load and having enough feed force to cut with. It seemed that the Clausing was maxed out and popping the overload clutch, I had similar problems. I just felt I was overloading the setup and did things differently. On my list of things to do in my spare time that I'll never get to is to mount a Servo table feed to the tailstock. I don't think it would be too difficult to do even if I had to make a new screw. I think it would be a nice addition to a mid-size lathe.

I have a tailstock rather than a turret on my TRAK 1630 tool room lathe and it is a heavy chunk of cast iron. Even a half dozen large holes is a chore. I drilled and tapped for an eye bolt at the base of the tailstock and made an accepting bracket that I mounted to the carriage. Now I rapid the carriage back to the tailstock, pin the two together, make sure the ways are oiled and the tailstock unlocked, and rapid the tailstock up into position for drilling. I have drilled using this setup with the tailstock lock slightly loose (under power) and it centers a hole quite well, but most of the time I drill with the tailstock conventionally locked completely. Through experience I have found that mounting the drill to the side of the toolpost and using a large drill to the side of the toolpost will cause the toolpost to pivot as it is only held in position by the central toolpost screw, and as we all know, screws are not meant to hold position, only dowel pins hold position. I have pinned my toolpost to the cross slide at 90 degrees (There is no compound on the lathe only a cross slide. Tapers, radii, & etc. are handled by the computer.) and that has done away with all twisting, but still use the tailstock for large drills. The best part of the whole setup is being able to rapid the tailstock back into its storage position at the end of the ways!

At my first job as an apprentice (this blew my mind btw) this old timer put a 1 1/4” HSS drill in the tailstock, and took a literal chain with a eye bolt attached on the carriage looped around the tailstock and underneath*** (He emphasized it must be UNDERNEATH) the hand wheel and use power feed…. It was on a stout leblonde lathe and I must say it worked well, saved himself a lot of arm work. Have you ever seen that Pete??

I've always used a quicker setup method. A scrap piece is mounted in the chuck and centre drilled. A centre is mounted in the toolholder and a second one in the tailstock. You can then hold the toolholder mounted centre between the chuck, inline and on height. With the cross-slide close to the right position and with the toolpost loose, you lock the toolholder to the post to set vertical position and then the toolpost to the top-slide.

I had to do this myself when I was still working. The only way I could keep the Aloris block from swiveling was to put a couple of flat files under the block, on either side of the lock down bolt, and then tighten it down good. It will NOT move then. Like a former co-worker used to say " clamp over files, the strength of a thousand kickers". He used that method all the time running a G & L.

@mrpete222 Do you think this could be slightly modified to be self-proving (maybe use a known bore, insert the drill into the bore, bring the tool post up to the already centered drill, then adjust tool holder height and tram to match bore engagement)? Seems like there's a golden nugget in here from the days of screw machines.

We had a shop with 4 turret lathes, and an axelson 16 ft lathe that ive made thousands of parts like this in cast iron. I wanted to get around to making a custom morse taper holder to be able to swap out the whole compound cross slide, but never got around to it. but if you have a quick change tool post with a morse taper tool holder, it works pretty well in that case, especially if you have insert drill bits and through-coolant

You need to wipe down your ways and apply fresh way oil to the ways.😊 I've always been hesitant to drill using the carriage feed on smaller lathes. It can create a lot of force when using larger diameter drill bits and damage the internals in the apron. Just my opinion and you know what others may say. Thanks for sharing! Ken
