The problem is people don’t even know what the original Robin Hood tale was about. he didn’t steal from the rich to give too the poor in the way we perceive it he stole from an illegitimate government unlawfully taxing its citizens as well as thieves masquerading as beggars and corrupt members of the church (but he always gave that money back to the church to be used as it was intended). Robin Hood himself was a noble and stopped his work when the legitimate king returned and even fought for him in several wars eventually leading to his death. He was never a “fuck the system” figure his story taught the valuable lessons of not obeying someone just because they say they are the authority and to respect and fight for the actual authority of your government. The classical Robin Hood would have shot this brat for being a thief and disrupting legitimate law.
@mstevens94
Жыл бұрын
He was basically a fed up noble, that saw that the King's son, was taxing the poor heavily on his feudal land and decided to rob the Prince's tax agents thwarting the Sheriff of Nottingham while doing so, with his gang of like minded followers and give the money back to those who the money was taken from. Somehow, modern interpretation took this as a anti-capitalist, pro-socialism tale, yet this fictional story is in medieval times, long before the ideas of socialism and capitalism was even coined. That is a crucial point you made as well, Robin Hood in the story fought in the Crusades with the King, why would it be a "f--k the system story", when the man is probably a close friend of the King, and probably respects the King, at the very least, as a comrade in arms over the Prince and the Sheriff of Nottingham who stayed behind in England, who are literally trying to bankrupt the kingdom and plunge it haphazardly into rebellion. Yea, the real Robin Hood would have killed this brat, because she is acting no different than a common thug.
@Vaelosh466

I don't know if it's the same for Canada, I think in the US there's a perception that the British government prior to somewhere in the late 19th century or maybe WWI was an illegitimate, tyrannical government by nature of having a hereditary ruler with actual power (helped by them being our enemy prior to relations starting to soften in the late 19th century). So the nuance of one king being legitimate and another not is sort of lost and Robin Hood is just a guy fighting a fundamentally wrong kind of government which predictably abuses its power because that's what hereditary rulers do (again, from the US perspective). Obviously that won't apply to everyone, but those who aren't that familiar with the folklore outside movies and shows about it.
@dizzyizzy7403
Жыл бұрын
@@mstevens94 yes exactly. The prince had no authority to increase taxes as he was not king but did it anyway basically committing treason to the kingdom. If anything Robbin hood is a feudalist restorer of authority not an anti government socialist revolutionary. But like I said people don’t know anything anymore and so a lot of people are just regurgitating what someone else told them and not actually looking into things themselves. It’s how so many lies about fiction, history, and even current events are spread so easily because no one asks themselves “is this person telling the truth?” and double checks by researching themselves. I really do think this direction believes he’s being true to the Robbin hood tale and doesn’t realize he’s not because he never double checked what people were telling him.

Hell I’m not British but after reading the original story I understood it. I've said this before and I'll say this again. Robin Hood doesn't work if you "modernize" it or try make it "grounded in reality". Sure, you can do a Robin Hood-type story, but it can't BE Robin Hood. Hell, The Dukes of Hazzard had Robin Hood-type elements (even in the theme song). It worked because it was its own thing. Robin Hood (same for King Arthur IMO) needs to embrace that it's a set in the Medieval period with good guys and bad guys. The dashing hero saves the kingdom from the evil sheriff/Sir Guy/Prince John. It's guys eating mutton legs. He wins the heart of Lady Marian and lives happily ever after. It's sword fights, quarterstaffs, and archery. It's Errol Flynn. The further you get away from that, the less it works.

I'd say you can modernize it, but you have to be at the core of what the story is about. Most people who are the modernizing sort view it as a socialist anti-capitalist piece, when in reality, its actually more anti-government/taxes. If I was bringing it more modern, I'd actually go past current date, current time and bring it more in the future. You have a land that was great, but the great ruler was removed from power and instead a new person sits on the throne. The old ruler possibly died in a plane crash or something, but isn't actually dead. Possibly our Robin Hood knows this, but cannot confirm it fully, and most others don't know it. New ruler is greedy and egotistical, taxes everything. Has a whole military or smaller personal army all ran by the sheriff. The sheriff likely has something to force him to obey, but it never really needs to be used because he really enjoys causing pain and suffering.

"Center Stage: On Pointe" (2016) has a score of 42% Fresh. "Superfly" (2018) has a score of 46%. Wanna hear how stupid this story REALLY gets? It was funded by the Canadian Media Fund. A part public, part private organization. So yes, Canadian Tax Dollars were indeed used to finance this show. Just a little fun thing. If a show is filmed in Vancouver, or even a commercial is filmed in Vancouver, and it uses the famous pink alley, that's generally a sign of the creatives being pretty new to filming in Vancouver. A lot of students see the alley for the first time, see that it's painted pink, and think "Wouldn't this be a cool place to film?" So, we're probably gonna see the pink alley in this show at some point, I just feel like that's something they'd do with the aesthetic they're going for and the quality of the show thus far.

You guys should get together and present your own online awards show at the end of the year. Robyn Hood is definitely a strong contender for a "participation" award. That's the award they give to young Timmy for eating glue and finger painting with his own poo. I'm guessing that Secret invasion will win the "golden clown shoes" award for utter failure on a huge budget. Ahsoka is a sure bet for the scfi "Void" award for telling the minimum amount of story in a season.

As with the worst fanfics, a lot of them just seem to be randomly assigned names from the original. Also, I have to say, this show could be used as an example of how a writer's race doesn't matter in making believable characters. I mean, there were 4 black women on the writing team, along with the showrunner, and the black characters are stereotypes while the white characters are the best. And they obviously know little of "the projects".

I know Director X's true identity: Neil Breen. At this point, I'm convinced the arbitrary casting of minorities-that are often insultingly written stereotypes-is less about feeling diversity is necessary and more about having an easy excuse to use the label of racism as a get-out-of-criticism card. Very few people actually care what the ethnicity or preferences of a character is, they just want those characters to be believable and realistic and to be in good, interesting stories that make sense. Also, wouldn't a modern day Robin Hood story be about a collective of hackers? I know that doesn't sound exciting, but the theft part could glossed over for showing them actively evading authorities. To use an actual sheriff in the modern age, too, WTF. The sheriff in the original story is a representative of corrupt authority and that's what is important, not his actual title that holds a lot less power in a completely different time and place! A friggin' small child would understand this even if they couldn't articulate it. I get that the suits care little about actual quality, but how do these clueless hacks get and keep these jobs in a brutal, profit-driven corporate world when their works aren't even successful? Is it all one giant troll and that is the point? If so, why? Is that just what happens when you have enough vacation homes, mega yachts, get first invite to purchase the highest end new Ferraris, and your number of trafficked concubines exceeds your ability and interest?

Come on. It's a crummy TV show. However, remaking or retelling stories has been done for ages. The great western film 'The Magnificent Seven' was a local remake of the Japanese film "The Seven Samurai." And what about all the "Sinbad the Sailor" or "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves" films? Legends, myths, and classic stories have spread around the world for ages especially because of the age of global empires. The American, British, French, Spanish, and Portuguese empires required their colonial subjects to assimilate into their cultures. You can see the same now taking place in areas that the Chinese have "acquired" like Tibet. You can't cry cultural appropriation when people who're assimilated into a culture embrace it. That is a requirement of empire.

The "hood" in Toronto is the Jane and Finch area. The problem was that a lot of high density highrise buildings were erected there in a short span, with a larger than normal percentage of public housing, without first ensuring all the necessary amenities were in place. So it underwent a population explosion and wound up with a very high density population with a large percentage being low income. So it has higher rates of crime and gang activity than the rest of the city. But even then you'll find that the majority of the locals are dedicated to improving the area and have zero tolerance for crime. Many government initiatives have been undertaken to provide opportunity and local improvement to the benefit of the locals. If anything, it is an argument for gentrification and city planning. The very opposite of what's portrayed as heroic in Robyn Hood. Director X? He grew up in one of the least dense areas of the Greater Toronto Area and went to good schools. I'm not sure how residents of the Jane/Finch area would take his potrayal of them. Frankly, his characters come off as spoiled upper-middle class woke kids.
