the depiction of the Batman and Superman first meeting was not the reason BvS sucked. it suffered the same itis as previous superhero movies in that they tried to pack too much into the movie and it was a bloated mess. If Disney tries to do the Punisher they will undoubtedly destroy it. But it's important to note that even Gerry Conway, the creator of the character, said, "Whether you think the Punisher is justified or not, whether you admire his code of ethics, he is an outlaw-he is a criminal. Police should not be embracing a criminal as their symbol." He equated it to putting a Confederate flag on a government building. In punisher #14 Castle even goes so far at to threaten cops who use his symbol, telling them, "If I find out you are trying to do what I do, I'll come for you next. [...] I'll say this once: We're not the same. You took an oath to uphold the law. You help people. I gave all that up a long time ago. You don't do what I do. Nobody does. You boys need a role model? His name is Captain America, and he'd be happy to have you." So any time you see a Punisher sticker on a police car or a Punisher skull patch on their clothing, just know that the police officer is pretty much publicly stating that they approve of a man who operates outside the law and murders people indiscriminately. I love the Punisher and I fucking ADORE Bernthal's portrayal of Castle, but yeah... not the most honorable symbol for police officers to stand behind...

At 8:45 Mr. Baron said, "they don't like that he stands for law and order," and I was quoting the creator of the Punisher and his views explaining why that's false. Frank Castle is what happens when the law and due process fails and a man is pushed past the point of no return into murderous vigilantism because of it. It's not bad to like a character or a logo, and yes, "you can like a character without approving of everything the character does". Symbols ARE complex, and BECAUSE of that, the symbol of a brutal and murderous vigilante doesn't really belong on the patrol vehicles or uniforms of people who are supposed to be upholding the law.

If an officer got a Punisher face tattoo, I imagine that would violate some sort of department policy. Same with any sort of sticker on a department patrol car. Being a lifelong comic book fan, it continues to blow my mind that Marvel Studios/Kevin Feige knocked it out of the park with the early MCU by faithfully translating the stories that THE FANS wanted to see and somehow forgot that. Out of nowhere, they skipped like 80+ years of incredible and popular stories to tell a fleet of more recent and far less popular stories with insanely less popular characters. I think putting a vigilante label on Punisher isn't a fair label. Spider-Man is a vigilante, Batman is a vigilante, our traditional comic heroes are vigilantes. They work outside the proper law by taking it into their own hands, but they ultimately turn in the criminal so they can answer to the law and societal justice can be served. Punisher takes justice into his own hands. He knows how unevenly applied the law is, he knows how power and money and influence can affect the scales of justice, and he knows that a dead criminal isn't a repeat criminal.

I would still say that Netfilx Daredevil and Punisher were some of the best comic book shows put to film. This is for both movies and television. Each character had strengths, weaknesses, and uniqueness that pits them against the bad guy and against other main characters. It makes them believable even when they are clearly operating in a world of superpowers and magic. Also, the actors put their all into the parts and did great. Iron fist was obviously played by an actor who didn't care, given life by writers and a director who didn't understand the 70s kung-fu tropes they were hoping to emulate. Luke Cage was in between - great in the acting and blacksploitation, mediocre in the delivery. As I understand it, they shot the 2004 Punisher in Tampa for two reasons: 1) the downtown is deserted during the day, making it easy to shoot there, and 2) they got a massive tax break for doing so.

I think Jon Bernthal has been vocal about not returning to play the role if it was going to be a goofy Disney version. I doubt Disney in 2023 would want to even touch the character considering how "problematic" he is in the eyes of the twitter mobs they see as their current audience. And even in the remote chance that they did bring him in, it would definitely be a ruined version of the character with the logo removed and no guns allowed. We never thought we would see a goofy Daredevil with Charlie Cox, but here we are.

A few years ago, I played Fornite with my Nephew. And they had quite a few Marvel characters in Fortnite. You could be Captain America- shooting people with guns. You could be Daredevil- shooting people with guns. You could be Thor or Spider-man or Ghost Rider - shooting people with guns. But you couldn't be Frank Castle. How. How do you not have Marvel's most known gunman not in the game???? They did let you be Cable shooting people with guns. But no Frank.

Short answer: yes and yes Long answer: Given Marvel’s history with their shows as of late how can anyone expect anything different? It's going to get the Disney treatment. Punisher is going to be cracking jokes while killing his enemies with kindness. Dark, grounded and gritty stories don't exist at Marvel anymore.

But that's what they want. They want to distance themselves from the legacy fans, so nothing done with the old logo can be associated with the current comic run. The new logo seems to be designed to be too cringe for anyone to use unironically.

@@Yodah97 I think eventually the company will lose control of the character. They are weirdly allergic to money. You are right about there not being anything new that fans will want, but the character and his logo are already deep in the culture. There's still a new Punisher tattoo being inked on someone at this very moment. I think it's too strong of a symbol for even the IP owner to destroy.

Season 1 and his appearance in Daredevil were *excellent* .... but man, they botched season 2. That said - it would probably look like a masterpiece compared to anything Disney would do with him. Even if we were still in the Winter Soldier era of the MCU, there is no way they could do justice to a character like the Punisher. Blade too, for that matter.

Vigilante justice is not a good thing, nor does it represent law and order. At best, it's a symptom of a broken and failed justice system and at worst it's some lunatic deciding to be judge, jury, and indeed executioner. There's an expression that says something like if you kill a killer, the number of killers in the world remains the same and it makes sense. You can't justify a murder by saying the victim was a murderer. The only thing that justifies killing is if it becomes absolutely necessary for removing an immediate threat to your own life or somebody else's, a.k.a. self-defense. And when it comes to Frank Castle, a lot of fans miss the fact that he doesn't glorify what he does or act like it's cool or whatever. He feels it's his mission and he has to do it. The U.S. government turned him into a killing machine and then sent him home to his family with whom he was planning to live a normal and happy life only for them to be murdered. That trauma, coupled with the PTSD from his combat experience turned him into a ruthless vigilante. He's not a hero to be emulated. He's a disturbed trauma victim whose actions, while they are emotionally understandable, are not morally justifiable. Jon Bernthal captured all of those aspects of the character perfectly and I have zero faith that Disney and their crack team of writers have the ability to handle them properly so, to be honest, I don't want him back unless they can pull off an absolute miracle and do everything right.

Don't care if Punisher returns. If it does, it will suck. Disney and the rest of Hollywood have forgotten the basics to a good film. You need good characters, good dialogue, and closeups that push the actors. In my opinion the best comic book film ever was 2009's The Dark Knight. More important than the extremely good special effects was Health Leger's performance as The Joker. This was captured in close up shots and the amazing dialogue by the writers. This was one of the rare times in a comic book film where a villain, in spite of wearing a ridiculous costume, somehow felt plausible. Just look at the Two-Face/Joker Hospital scene alone. We will still use the "And everybody loses their mind" meme to this day.

This is… Okay, you’re almost there at 4:55 but The best Punisher movie isn’t Equalizer. That’s the Best Wolverine movie ever. The Punisher isn’t trying to mind his business and getting caught up in other peoples drama and he reluctantly uses his skills as a weapon to bring justice and vengeance to those who need it; it’s the very opposite; he is purposefully and intentionally at war. THIS is what Marvel and everyone keeps missing. It’s not the violence that makes him the Punisher , plenty of anti heroes are violent. It’s not the guns or even the trademark skull tho that’s cool and should’ve been represented better. What makes him the Punisher is in his very name; He is commited to the cause of punishing violent criminals and those he deems worthy of it until the day he dies. It’s his war that makes him who he is. Marvel has had every opportunity to get that right and the closest we’ve seen is War Zone which was silly but it got alot right.

We may have reached the point where anything that doesn't suck in a truly embarrassing fashion can no longer be made. Not in the United States, Canada, England or Australia anyway. THE MESSAGE has even infected low budget independent movies. Generally I avoid anything made after 2010, because you can almost count on it sucking horribly. There's a rare gems, like Nobody. But very few. You can see THE MESSAGE creeping into everything even back into the 1990s.

Gerry Conway said: “The vigilante anti-hero is fundamentally a critique of the justice system, an example of social failure, so when cops put Punisher skulls on their cars or members of the military wear Punisher skull patches, they’re basically [siding] with an enemy of the system. They are embracing an outlaw mentality. Whether you think the Punisher is justified or not, whether you admire his code of ethics, he is an outlaw. He is a criminal. Police should not be embracing a criminal as their symbol.”

I think because of people seeing a cop with the punisher logo sitting and not acting during Uvalde made it look like a bad association. I remember the logo specifically being tied to that incident and now there are possibly too many people associating it with lack of protection due to that cop's lack of response
