I still use an enterprise drip-olator most every day. Mine was made late 20s early 30s with wood handles. all measurements are marked out for you. luckily my local grocery store still does the grind your own beans, you pick the coarseness and many flavors. i always go with a courser ground as was used in these pots. cuts out on grounds being in the pot, most of it anyway. Even though I have a Keurig it rarely gets used, it simply doesn't make coffee as good as my old drip-o-lator
@jjh63084

I was just a kid when my parents used this type of coffee pot but the grounds getting into the bottom didn't seem to be an issue as there were different grinds of coffee marked right on the can. The drip grind was coarse enough that the grounds would not fall through the coffee grounds basket, no paper filter was needed.

I was raised on coffee made in a Drip-o-lator, which I believe was a brand name. I know they were making them into the 1960's and early 70's - although maybe not that brand. They sort of disappeared when Mr. Coffee came on the scene. Usually you bought them in hardware stores. We never used a paper filter. Also, we didn't take it apart after the coffee was done - we just pressed on the lid on top of the reservoir/coffee basket to make sure it didn't come apart and just poured. We also never reheated the coffee - when it got cold we had cafe au lait and added about 1/2 scalded milk and 1/2 cooled coffee in the cup.

Thanks for the video! I grew up seeing this kind of pot on everybody's stove, but I wasn't so sure how to use it. I was given a coffee pot that works like this today and am looking forward to some coffee tomorrow morning. We had an electric percolator for years and never used any kind of filter. If the basket that the coffee goes in is wet before adding the coffee, it should keep the grounds from ending up in the pot. That's how the percolator worked, so I guess I'll find out if this is the same in the morning.

My dripolater doesn’t get grounds in my coffee unless the grind is too fine. One thing I do is heat up the pot the coffee will be dripping into. I set it on an d heating trivet so the coffee stays hot as it drips through the grinds. I make a small two cups of coffee or so and it stays nice in the trivet for several hours. My pot is ceramic and though the pot stays hot, the handle stays cool. Not sure how but it’s nice that I don’t need a pot holder to decant the coffee. It makes a really good pot of coffee. It’s better than a pour over or an electric drip coffee maker. Not quite as good as my moka pot but I’d say it was close. Very easy to clean up too.

I love my old Drip-O-Lators. I have a 3 cup and a 9 cup. They make the best brews and are so easy to use--no electricity, or breakable glass pots, and i can brew a perfectly consistent pot of coffee at 4AM when I'm only 1/2 awake. My ONLY concern is the aluminum toxicity issue. A few years ago I began thinking that making coffee every day from this aluminum pot may involve health risks. I am 68 now and have been using my 3 cup drip o later since the 1970s. I'm sure the company that manufactured ii is long gone. Is there anyone who manufactures this type of drip pot in stainless steel?

My mom has the same one as you and I looked at the bottom and the company is “Enterprise Aluminum” which made me wonder... are these made from aluminum? I really want to use it but I don’t want to put hot water in something containing aluminum since that could be toxic. Paul Revere brand makes stainless steel ones. But in those type, the hot water on top part is one piece with a smaller part below to hold the coffee grinds. The bottom of the coffee grinds has a lot of holes so the coffee drains from the grinds quickly. Just above where you have the grinds, there is a round disc that fits on top of the grounds. This disc has less holes in it, so when you pour your hot water above this disc the water more slowly drips through onto the grounds. I hope that makes sense. People used many aluminum products for decades with out any toxic affects on their body. I would not overly worry about it.
