tunnel
At each of the two passes, tunnels that were built when the road was opened in the Meiji era remain.
The Aoki Pass Tunnel (95 m total length, 3.6 m height limit) is the oldest tunnel on Japan's national highways that can be used as an existing road, and was opened in 1890 (Meiji 23). 13]. In 1957 (Showa 32), the tunnel was enlarged and renovated to make it easier for automobiles to pass through, but its original form has not been preserved, and the tunnel entrances on both sides are now concrete portals.[13]
The Aiyoshi Tunnel at Jizo Pass was also opened in 1890 and underwent renovation work in 1934. Although it is about the same width as the Akidori Tunnel, it has alternate traffic signals using traffic signals, which is unusual for a national highway tunnel. Please note that motorcycles and bicycles are not subject to traffic control by traffic lights.
