This gave an old sailor some much-needed peace and relaxation. I will be traveling to that beautiful place real soon.

In 1976 I was there when typhoon Pamala went through. All those green trees you see here were gone in one day. The island was totally brown as the foliage was stripped completely off the island. That was amazing, the tropical foliage is programmed to regrow very fast. In one month there were new shoots on all the trees were growing again. We had no power for over 3 months and I used a Honda generator for the refrigerator. I see the wooden electric poles were replaced with steel poles as wood cannot handle 140 mph winds.

Thanks for the short history. I was born and live in The Netherlands and I was already asking myself why the street poles looked so thick and strong, they looked like concrete poles for me.

I’ve been looking for a good “drive around the island” video like this. Thank you! Listening to the radio along with the scenery made me miss the island and the beautiful things like seeing the ocean every morning while driving to school. Now that I am away and have to drive 1 1/2 hours to get to the beach makes me realize how much I took for granted growing up.

This means a lot to see this video. I was stationed at NAVcams WESTPAC from 1976-1977, and have had a desire to see the island again someday. This is like going on a trip in itself just to ride along although I sit in Wisconsin at 0 degrees presently. Thank you for posting this. It takes me back to my younger days down memory lane. Hafa Adai!

I wish I can say the same. I was there 1982, 83. I remember a country dance place called The Hitching Post (I think that was the name. Way more down, a place where hard rock was played but damn I don't remember the name. Then there was motel row but you would turn left on a certain road to get to it. Both the other places would be on the right if this came from the Naval station.

Man the memories. Especially driving by Cabras power plant. As you turned I wanted to get a good look at the old USO club later the Merchant Seamans Club. The old Merchant Seaman club was further on down by Charlie dock. used to take launch boat to my ship.watching the drive to the base now. Man that place has changed a lot. I should consider retiring there. I can use the VA there and base shopping with my service connection.

The major highways on Guam still needs to be worked on certain route areas, I left in 2014 & bc of our weather there really hurts the roads. If Guam can sweep the roads quarterly the place will look fresher. Out here it’s the same in Calif some highway roads are terrible, the freeways are maintain bc it’s Federal Highways just back to back on peak hours ...

No motorway/freeway/expressway in Guam? For a developed island like Guam, that's surprising.
@nathanielfernandez5397

nope the most we have is a 6 lane road that only gets up to 35mph crazy😂 in some of the more rural big roads people go 50-60 anyways so

@@nathanielfernandez5397 Tahiti and Barbados have good dual carriageways/expressways. That's pretty impressive for small island nations.
@urgeeked3977

Honestly they could make a freeway or an expressway if they want to, but I believe the big problem of not doing it is probably due to most of the material of roads mixture they use to make is from coral sand and not regular sand, since Guam as an island doesn’t have regular sand. Another major problem is that it would cost loads of money for them to import overseas sand so that’s probably why they generally use coral sand and other mixtures since it’s cheaper. Costs less, but also super dangerous since the road can easily become oily when it gets wet which is why you generally see reduced speed limits mainly labeled as “35mph”
