I am an American, but I have been living in Germany for 22 years. I go in about 10-12 driven hunts a year and it is common here in Germany that wounded or obviously hurt animals are harvested to put them out of their misery, even if they are not specifically allowed for that driven hunt. You did the right thing and as you see, the Germans were in agreement :-).

Nice choice to cull that stag. Good responsible hunting Tobias. I think it is absolutely our imperative to cull wounded animals. On Dec 31 I similarly culled a roe doe (out of season) when I noticed that it was missing it's right hind leg below the knee. On gralloch it seemed in good health--lots of fat and no infections or parasite load--but the landowner thanked me for the shot (which I have to say was superb!). On the land on which I have permission, we always take wounded animals. As we have no wolf here, it is our duty as the "apex predator" to keep the herds healthy. This is part of responsible deer management.

Kristian, Thanks for sharing your thoughts in this matter. I totally agree and I also think you made the right choice to take that doe. When it comes to wounded animal it should not matter what season it is, it is an act of mercy to cull them. Have a nice day! Tobias

You were correct to shoot the stag with the injured leg. I have done so myself twice, when hunting whitetailed deer in Pennsylvania. However, one time I saw a doe limp into the clearing that I was watching, and assumed it had been injured by a rifle bullet. It created a problem because it was not doe hunting season. I looked at the doe with my binoculars, and saw that the entire front right leg was gone from the shoulder down, and the wound was completely healed. The injured doe was with two fawns that it had raised. I saw no need to dispatch that doe because it was doing quite well with just three legs. Later I read an article by a man in another state who saw a doe with a broken front leg, which he couldn't shoot because the season was over. Because he lived in that area he saw the deer on multiple occasions. He said that eventually the injured leg shriveled up and fell off, and the wound healed. That doe late gave birth to a fawn. When hunting in Montana with my friend he shot a nice mule deer buck that had been shot broadside through the brisket. Both the entry and exit wounds were completely healed. Deer are tough!

Thanks for your feedback. You have a great point that deer and wildlife are tough. I have once shot a Fallow Deer female that had only three legs. She had only one front leg and she was in good shape. When I shot her, I actually did not notice that she had only three legs, I was totally surprised when walking up to the dder... :-O //Tobias

First of all I want to congratulate you for your great documentaries. Any responsible hunter should always regard it as a MUST to relief an injured wild animal from its suffering. You do not know how many times, when called to a traffic accident with wild animals, I have to deal with some fake animal lover who does not want to understand that you cannot take a roe to the vet and that you have to shoot it asap to stop its suffering. Kind regards from Switzerland!

Luuk, I'm happy you like the video! I can understand the difficulties it can mean when it comes to big male deer and if they are wounded. I always try to put down a wounded animal. Last year we had a roe buck that was shoot but we never found it. this year on the first day of the season i shot a nice roe buck that didn't have any visible wounds. But when i was gutting it i noticed that one of the lungs was stuck to it's ribs. also when i had removed the skin i could see that half of the left front legs muscels were gone and the sternum was just shattered into pieces. It's quite remarkable that an animal that is so heavily wounded can recover and look completly normal.

Here in The United States in my state of Alabama. Shooting a injured animal is a bit more difficult because the 3 I have shot were out of season. So I had to call Fish and Game tell them what is going on each one I had to have video evidence to show the Warden who then would sign the tag for the animal. 2 have went to theHunters for the Hungry and 1 went to my freeze. Two of the three had freshly broken legs and one had broke back(was able to walk but not far and couldn’t stand up for long).

Hi, on Saturday 4 Jan I was on a druckjagd near Weilburg in Germany. We were told that there was an injured Hirsch, and whilst Stags were not free we should shoot this one. It had been wounded 3 weeks ago. At the end of the shoot, there it was... dead. The forward left leg had been shot at the elbow and it had lost a lot of weight in comparison to another stag of a similar age. There is no doubt one should put down a wounded animal, and to do so as quickly as possible, not worrying about meat damage. I saw a lovely 12 ender stag but it did not even have a cold so I could not shoot..... ( a joke in case someone gets upperty!!!!).

I really like the rifles made by European manufacturers, and enjoy seeing them in your videos. Also, your 9.3x62 is a fascinating caliber that is not well known here in the U.S. If most of my hunting career was before me instead of behind me, I would get a rifle in the caliber. Hey Tobias. First of all, i would like to thank you for all the great content you and your team are putting out. It's always fantastic video quallity, and that is essential for a good hunting video in my opinion. The only thing you need to work on, is your swedish accent. But i know you're doing your very best. The only reason why im giving this critic, is that I truly belive this cannel could be one of the leeding hunting channels in the world. You always show a good hunting ethic, and it's very informative. Keep up the good work! I would like to wish you a Happy new year, and the best of luck in future hunts ! Cheers

viggzyo, Thanks for the very inspiring commentary. You are spot on regarding the accent, but this is something I will have to improve over a long term. The more movies we do, the better I think it will be. What do you think is the best, speak english with Swedish accent or speak Swedish and subtitle it to english. What do you think that people that have english as a native language prefer? I also want to wish you and your loved once a happy new year! Tobias facebook.com/redmoosehunting/

I think the way you do it now (speaking english, with a swedish accent) is the way to go. I as you said. It gets better for every video, and I 100% agree. Practice makes perfect my friend. When it comes to wounded game in the U.S. state of Arkansas you cannot kill it if it is out of season, they will fine you. I shot a 10 point deer that was hit by a car and was in great pain. The fish and game officer wrote me a ticket and I went to court. I told the Judge that the deer was in pain so I shot it so it would not suffer, and told the judge I would not have done any less if if were him. He loved my sense of humor and let me go. I will not see any animal suffer no matter what.

George, Thank you for the nice comment! Nice to hear that you also hunt in Brandenburg and thats good to hear that the law makes sense. It's so many times that the law does not make any sense... ;-) Have a nice new years eve! Tobias facebook.com/redmoosehunting/

Shooting wounded animals is not only not a problem but morally the right thing to do! Apart from that in Germany we have the problem that we have to many deers and boars in general. Since agriculture moved from grain to corn and oilseed rape in many areas their numbers increased in an amount that the forests are suffering. And a healthy forest is the base of a healthy environment.

Robert, Din feed-back är noterad.

😎 keep up the good work!!
