Possibly one of the better accord generations. I always had a liking for the late 80s early 90s accords...

These cars truly are great. I purchased the manual hatchback model over the summer. It only had 100,000 miles, costed 1,000 dollars and all it needed was a tune up and new breaks. It's a little less comfortable to drive than my old car (1990 Chrysler Imperial) but its been consistently getting between 28 and 32 mpg. My buddy is a mechanic, he says I could probably expect to get 200,000-300,000 miles out of it if I treat it right. Once upon a time car companies knew how to make a car last...

Driver's Seat with Tony Whitney and Ted Laturnus review the 1989 Honda Accord Coupe. Converted from VHS, this is a classic review with the original (and best) cast of Driver's Seat when it aired in Canada.

@KidKlassic91 I don't know about specifics of the fourth generation Accord, but in these third generation models, all you have to do is switch the ventilation setting to "recirculate." Then you won't have any air coming through the vents when the fan is off.

He said EXi which I have not found as being a model for this 1989 year. I own a SEi and I'm thinking Honda made a DX, LXi, and SEi coupe in this year. Maybe it's a exported model, don't know.

@quirpco Simple. He bought my sister an Sunfire as her first car. My sister got a high payed job over the years, lease an brand new Acura EL and gave the sunfire to my father. Then it was my turn to have my own car a few years after. I had the choice of getting the poorly maintained Acura of my sister or another used car. My father checked in a GM and a Chrysler dealer. He found the Sebring, taped on the exhaust and said "look at how solid it is!". And that was the beginning of the headaches...

The review sounds exaggerated but I had an 89 EXI when it was 25 years old. It was one of the best cars I ever drove. It was amazing even with 250,000kms on it.

Yeah, REC will close the vents to outside air...and i dont like the coupe as much as the 4dr or hatch, ither. Popups are win, though.. My 89 STILL rides like a mercedez, and i'd say it has better visibility than any car ive ever driven, and is more comfertable, aswell. I dont think the steering is telescopic, it tilts, and you can pull the tilt lever out to push it down so you can unlock the wheel, then pull up and let go and it goes back flush with the dash. The seats are super comfertable, too

Honda never put an 8-track player in any of their cars. This car is old but it is not that old. I just bought an 89 Accord EXi sedan with a 5 speed. It has almost 300,000kms on it but still drives nicely.

In 1989, those were the direct competitors in the Accord's size class. It has nothing to do with vehicle quality.

I liked the accords with the popup headlights always more. The EU Sedan with the fixed headlights tend to be a bit boring like many other japanees sedans. But with the prelude/integra styled front, things look a wholel ot better. and expensive. ;)

Thought about the dash vents again, it is true. You san set it to defrost only and itll still blow out the dash vents.. i thought there was something wrong at first.. Otherwise, i can not think of another thing that confused or otherwise made me think negatively about this car. It's a wonderful machine.

Japanese market doesn’t really want cars of this size today. They don’t even sell the Civic there. The best Japanese cars are those meant for sale in the much pickier home market. Once the US-centric 98 Accord came out, the elegance was gone. If you wanna see what Honda is capable of, look at their small car offerings in Japan.

I disagree because they could have mentioned Ford or GM cars in the same size class but did not. So in other words, they are implying the POS Eagle and VW compares. You will also note that they beat the bejesus out of domestic cars in their review. That being said, Eagle was built by Chrysler but for some reason, they think it's better than a POS from Ford or GM.

Man...my father had one and I loved it to death! But instead of giving me that car as a first car (and I told numbers of times that I wanted that car!) he gave it to his brother who fucked up the engine in a few months and my father ended up with a Sunfire. I ended up with a Sebring. Seriously wtf? :(
