But in 2007 I was driving to Las Vegas to catch a plane ... and I was already astounded at how much traffic there was on 15 when, uh oh, SANDSTORM starting just east of Barstow. Near-zero visiblity. Everybody slowed to a crawl, each driver carefully watching the tail lights on the vehicle ahead, and we certainly couldn't see what was waiting for us further up the road. When we emerged from the sand ... TWO NORTHBOUND LANES GOING NOWHERE. Somewhere far, far up ahead, there had been a collision, and that was that. I still managed to get to my flight, though, because there was a breakdown of the monorail thing at the Las Vegas airport, which meant nobody, including flight crews, could get to the departure/arrival gates until it was fixed.

.1 Data from the National Transportation Safety Board showed that EVs were involved in approximately 25 fires for every 100,000 sold. Comparatively, approximately 1,530 gasoline-powered vehicles and 3,475 hybrid vehicles were involved in fires for every 100,000 sold.

@@MrTeff999 yeah but does it show how long it takes to secure a fire from a gasoline powered vehicle versus a lithium ion fire? You're missing the point.

Was there a better way to handle that, besides shutting down 60 miles of freeway for a battery fire? It sure looks like the incident commander, (or lack of one) went overboard, and there was zero planning, contingency SOP for this scenario. Those consultants received some great overtime tho.

It is impossible to be stuck between Los Angeles & Las Vegas on I-15. I-15 runs between San Diego & the Canadian Border and travels about 50 to 60 miles east of L.A. I-15 doesn't even enter L.A. County, it is in San Bernardino County at the site of this accident.

Was just on that freeway a week ago. I’ve driven it many, many times. It’s amazing how some of these 18-wheelers weave and swerve at freeway speeds. I think it’s because the drivers are getting drowsy.
@hifiman4562

Maybe drowsy, sure. But the CA road surfaces are horrible so our huge tires easily catch the ruts. And makes the truck swerve in and out of the ruts.

Money. Big time investments made by worldly powerful companies and wealthy people that are in so tight with the government via lobbying and coercion, that regardless of how big a mistake they've made in the investments, they'll just keep doing the wrong thing and normalizing it until it becomes accepted. Look into who owns the most stock of ev companies. There is a glaringly obvious pattern.

@@MrTeff999 Context is always key and you're missing the context of the fire's danger to a driver and the passengers. If a fire occurs with an ICE vehicle, it is occurring outside of the area where the people are, giving enough time to escape before a fatality in most cases. If a fire occurs with an EV, the fire is directly below the driver and passengers area. If the batteries are damaged by fire, then the doors will not open through regular means because the door opening mechanism is electric powered. The fire from an EV emits toxic smoke and it quickly fills the driver and passengers area. If the occupants in such a situation do not have a glass breaker, they will quickly be overcome by the toxic smoke in the cabin and will suffocate and burn.
