The 4AGE was never had a carburetor on a production engine. Only some of the racing engines received a carburetor. Carbureting a 4AGE is a popular upgrade if you don't want to go through the trouble with an aftermarket ECU.

Corolla FX, such a beautiful yet simple car. My dad's car is a Toyota Tercel '85 and the previous owner swapped the motor (3A-C) and put into the engine bay a 4A-C. The curious thing is that the gearbox belonged to a another Corolla and was 5 gear and runs quite smooth.

Toyota's manuals has a distinct feeling to them, even on the new cars. they're usually pretty light and have a long throw, and they go in gear pretty smoothly, so smooth infact that you can put them in gear without clutching and they won't grind at all.

That car in the LeMons race was a Plymouth Sundance (ie Dodge Shadow). It had the 3 liter V6. If I remember correctly, the ecu crapped out mid race. They borrowed a simple 2 barrel carb and slammed it on there to finish. Very cool engineering on the fly. Love hearing the stories from that series.

I'll bet the "electronically controlled" stock carburettor's secondary is clogged like my '92 Vanette, it ran slow and hot for years until I figured it out. Take off the carby cover, clean out the top of the carby with carburettor cleaner spray, check vacuum lines and give it a rev out to find redline on a test-drive and if it suddenly picks up when the revs get really high, that's your problem. If not, it was fun finding rev limit right?

You talk about the Honda EF hatch as if the one you drove was the only one. The 70hp 4 speed one you drove was the base, pretty rare when they came out. The most common were the DX hatch that had a 5 speed and 92 hp. Then the Si had around 108hp, same as the FX GT-S hatch which had the AW11 MR2 engine (tiny drop in hp due to exhaust plumming).

Agreed. I have the 5 door liftback version of it's successor, the AE93, with the smallport 4AGE, and I'd love to see the FX16 for comparison. I'm pretty sure the FX16 weighs less, as the AE93 has more sound deadener and electric everything (Windows, mirrors), as well as nicer seats, so I'm pretty sure my later model weighs a noticeable amount more - yet it still feels light and it's heaps of fun to throw around.
