This trip through the Coal Region begins on US 209 northbound in Tamaqua, a few blocks beyond the busy intersection of US 209 and PA 309 in the center of Tamaqua. The towns seen in this trip are Tamaqua, Coaldale, Lansford, Nesquehoning and Jim Thorpe in that order. The trip ends by going along Broadway in Jim Thorpe in the very attractive historic district of Jim Thorpe which has been very nicely spruced up over the past 35 years or so and is now a major tourist destination for visitors to the Poconos. This area had its greatest population growth during the boom years of anthracite mining which were from roughly 1875 until 1925. There is still some anthracite mining taking place but it is nowhere near the size and scope of what it was in the first half of the 20th Century. This trip goes through Schuylkill and Carbon Counties.

I haven’t been through many of those towns since I was little, but I give a huge thumbs up for Jim Thorpe downtown. The Jim Thorpe Inn is a great place and that balcony at night is magical. Great shops, great train rides, great hiking options and great people, hard to beat that little town.

Someday, take a drive from Tamaqua to Pottsville on 209. You'd like that drive.
