I honestly think that drops has done more to expand my Swedish vocabulary than anything else (including reading). I have been using it since February and there is something about the relaxed, no stress, no points, etc vibe when using it that makes me remember things. I find myself using it with the sound off when watching TV or other activities that are a bit mindless and I am genuinely surprised at how much I remember later.

Hi Freddie - so it is definitely working at least for some people in some countries now, because I can finally check the stats on this and a few people have actually purchased through, at the 50%. The provider of the affiliate link emailed me about something because Drops hadn't even told them who I was or anything, so I got an email from them saying like "Hey, just wondering what you're selling etc..." It's kind of weird, but I think this may have been behind the complete non-function of it.

For a lot of nouns, drops seems to work pretty well (specifically nouns which are well represented by an image). The lack of native audio is mildly annoying, but not really a huge deal. I still prefer in-context vocabulary most of the time though, and rely on sentence cards w/ native audio and 1 unknown word to help make immersion comprehensible which isn't something I can get from drops.

Days of French 'n' Swedish that said, I think my biggest gripe is that the Russian pronunciation is a little weird. It sounds a little too machine-y (is it text to speech?). As much as possible I’m following male Russian speakers because the voice and pronunciation and word stresses seem different than from female speakers.
@orcasquall
4 жыл бұрын
@@sandwichbreath0 I'm going to adopt your approach for Drops in Russian then (not sure about the other languages). The Russian voice in Drops is a really over-average high pitch female voice which is disconcerting and grates on my nerves... Even Google Translate has a normal female voice.
@sandwichbreath0
4 жыл бұрын
@@orcasquall That always concerns me too, because I didn't discover the immersion method until I'd spent 1-2 years mastering completely unnatural pronunciations, and had a really heartbreaking setback when I did eventually move on to native content and tried to speak to actual Russians. What I do now is approach all 'teaching material' with the attitude that I'm only there to get previews of new words, and the app's pronunciation is just a hint, not the rule; just something for my brain to recognize later in immersion. Then, when the word does pop up in immersion, that's when I start focusing on how native speakers say it. I've had a lot of success doing it that way, so that's a 'safe' way to still use it for Russian, ha.
@sandwichbreath0
3 жыл бұрын
@@orcasquall Vincent, you were right about the unnatural voice, I forgot how weird it gets! I'm still having success with just using Drops as a 'preview' to new vocab, but sometimes the weird pronunciation sticks for a little while when it's excessive. For instance, I still hear that over-enthusiastic "ветчина!" whenever I see/hear it elsewhere.. and I'm gonna need to come across electric kettles a bit more in my immersion before I get rid of the way the Drops bot says электрический чайник, haha. Apart from that, I think it's still a good supplement for the most part. Hope you had some success as well.

I really disliked Drops. You can't teach most words with just 1 color drawings. Verbs and adjectives don't work for me at all. Plus the pictures are very ugly imo.

Oh I loved Drops, it's the only language learning app that I must have ever paid for, got an annual subscription in April 2019 (to 2020). And I'm a person who has maybe only ever paid for less than 10 apps in my life. And I still have over 1000 Arabic words written down that I took from Drops, which to this year (2023) I had been memorizing from. I have been a vocabulary over grammar person for years and so I really liked Drops. Though now I have become interested in grammar.

i also use drops for about a month now (not the premium version), my main problem is, that it shows me the German translation in the beginning, when I get to know the new word, but I haven't found a way to look it up again, while training, when I forgot what the picture is supposed to be....

I wish you could get rid of the streak option on apps. I have 3 different language apps and they all have streaks. I don’t want to use them every day or maybe even every week. I don’t like the obligation of using something.

Good review as always, but one huge con for me is the amount of mental energy I have to use trying to figure out what the picture is about. Often I have to click on it to see which word it tries to picture. That is for me the biggest issue for me with drops

For Japanese, where pitch accent is important, the voices were too robotic. I agree with the comment on LingQ being rough.

Well that will always be a problem when they are breaking whole phrases into small chunks. But honestly, no one should be using Drops as a pitch accent (or ANY aaccent) practice.

4-month streaker in drops here- Do you also have these moments where you forgot how to say a particular word, but it's too easy to select the right picture anyway? I feel like the spaced repetition algorithm is too simplistic. I'd like a feature where you can mark words as "not exactly remember" to be able to see it again earlier than others.
@daysandwords

I basically don't believe in systems where you have to decide whether you knew something or not. I don't even like "low key Anki", where it's just "yes or no". I feel like it's just as taxing as learning the actual language, to always be deciding whether you should see stuff again. The goal of building up vocabulary in the target language is only to increase comprehension of native speaker material. So if you can pick the right one out of 4, that'll do. You would probably understand that word if you came across it in a book. Basically I don't take Drops very seriously, I just think it's a bit of fun and a veeeeery smooth way into getting towards something more serious, e.g. if I take up Croatian in 2021, I'll have a small habit with it already.

Review of review: The flashcard yes/no challenge still exists and I have this exact same problem. I only ever got two wrong, mind you. One because I wasn't thinking, but the other because it conceptually fit the word. I think that's actually a sign you already know what this word means and you're wasting your time lol The 6 bubble matching thing isn't about having to think. This "game" isn't about thinking, it's about repitition. Wiring your mind to associate a concept with a foreign word. It could be pop psychology, but I read somewhere that it takes 200 (?) repititions for something to be baked into your head meat forever.

Thank you for this video! I was wondering when you would do a video about Drops! I actually stopped using it some months ago but yesterday, after seeing you did a review about it, I restarted using it. I just checked out the new lesson on "Stay healthy", the new Corona chapter and had to laugh about some of the illustrations they had come up with for some words, but besides that I realized that for this new lesson the did not using articles in my target language (European Portuguese). Interestingly there were articles displayed in the German translation (my mother tongue). In other lessons they normally do use articles with nouns. I missed a review on the dojo. Do you use it? Other than that I do agree with your cons. Sometimes it's just too easy and there are so many second chances. PS: Thanks for the discount link. I was waiting for a Drops discount! :)
