Feeling the love!! ❤❤❤ Thank you so much (again!), Andy! We adore your very musical analysis of drum composition and the more expressive side of drumming. This was definitely a nerve-racking playthrough to record-performing alongside a drummer and friend for whom I have extraordinary respect (and as you said, is a damn badass!!). Just one note; this is actually our keyboardist Frank's composition. Baard and I had to the learn the very precise individual parts that weave in and out of each other (with us having more opportunities later in this playthrough to put our own flair in the performance). And a huge thank you to Mark as well! It was great meeting you on our recent tour and I greatly appreciate the awesome footage you took and you helping to spread the word about Earthside and me as the man behind the kit! Heaps of love, Ben/Earthside

Frank is a musical genius and a Badass as well. The ideas and dynamic musical structures he incorporates in his compositions are amazing. The drums are a musical instrument, not just a timekeeping device. Great when composers and drummers allow the rhythm parts to breathe and have its own life and voice. ❤

Edit: firstly I should be giving credit to Ben and Baard, who are amongst my favorite drummers. They are so creative, yet technical…it was a perfect collaboration. Hey everyone, composer of this song here! First off, thank you Mark for suggesting our song. I wanted to write out a few points here because there's a lot going on in the production of this song, and we have no videos explaining anything we do haha... I actually came up with the two-drummer idea as a conceptualization of the struggles between humans (which plays into the broader concept of the song) - the togetherness and the fighting. I composed this as a fluid unit, with intentional beats, and fills that seamlessly moved from one drummer to another. So you basically have continuous drum fills that are uninterrupted, and in some instances while one player is doing a fill, the other is keeping the beat, so the beat and the fill never die off between the two drummers. 3:55 this part is actually extremely complicated and is basically one continuous fill carried out by both drummers. It also features an insane time signature interruption when the switches happen in the middle of the fill. In the middle section 4:39, the drummers never hit kick drums or snares at the same time. They are spaced so that they never overlap but create a continuous flow. The original song and this song both feature improvised drum trade-off patterns from Ben and Baard during the first 4 hi-hat beat trade-offs. But in this version there is much more improvisation towards the end of the song by the drummers. I'm not sure if I know of another song that is intentionally composed for two drummers like this, I've only heard material with trade-offs, or "shed" style battles. But this has intentional fills composed to work together between the drummers to tell a story. Also, the production features both drummers slightly panned to each side. This creates a cascading and swirling effect with the tom fills. And in the 4:39 section the snares bounce from right to left depending on which drummer is hitting. Thank you all for listening, and love your reactions Andrew! Cheers.

Great song, it's a true jaw dropper! FYI, two of the songs I know that were intentionally written for two drummers are "Triggered" by Chris Turner and Thomas Lang, as well as "Crimson Deep" by Tarja Turunen with the drummers Mike Terrana and Will Calhoun. The latter isn't remotely as intense as your creation, though :D

@@benearthside OMG so cool to chat with you. It was in Cleveland. I was front row. It was an amazing concert. Thank you so much for visiting and playing for us. After the concert was over I talked with your keyboardist. I had mentioned to him that I've never heard of you guys before and I felt bad because the music was so impactful and I enjoyed it so much I felt guilty that I had never heard of it lol. I think I've listened to A Dream in Static probably a dozen times. 🤘
