Yeah. Think that often gets overlooked about this performance. If he was just playing by ear to what he is listening to, he'd not be able to set anything up in advance - which he clearly does. So basically what he has to do is think some seconds in advance about what will be coming up judging from the song structure etc. That can be best noticed close to the end, where he seems to have been expecting something different (less quit ending). On all the other parts however he's mostly correct with what he is assuming to come up.

except if he would have played tool and went in, he couldn't. Predictable musicstructure is often but not always a thing. Let's stay in the Emo/Punk Genre: Greenday's 'Jesus of Suburbia' also vreaks those rules. Which in my opinion is such a beautifull thing when it happenes. But you are absolutely right. Most songst follow a certain structure, only the tempo changes a pop songg lets take fourth and a typical emo/punk song in threes. So, usually the instinct doesn't lead you astray, but it could. Is what I want to say here. What is more important to highlight in Chad's performance here anf even more important (because every musicion knows how a simple song is construction) is how beautiffully he afampts in a change he didn't see coming. He does it with such easy that it neatly blends seemlessly and in my opinion that id what makes this pergormance absolutely SPECTACULAR!

Jamming is the best! That's what I did all the time in my teens. My older brother plays the guitar, so we jammed. He was light years ahead of me. He started a joke band with an old friend (in '89) and I became the drummer (etc.-we experiment with tons of stuff) and we're going to record something here in November after a hiatus of about ten years (each time we meet to play we record an "album", so we've recorded quite a lot of music!). And I played with my friends, of course. At school we could use the music room as we pleased in the breaks, so some of us played and sometimes even recorded some songs. But all the jamming taught me how to jam. I didn't even think about it back then, but jamming is not something you just do, you have to practice jamming.

With that free jazz thing you brought up memories from years back. We went to record something but before that guitarist was really enjoying his new effect whatever machine. Well, while I listened that I put on my drums and started to jam with him. And we jammed about 15minutes this very weird " like The Doors : The End " - thing. Then we got recording what we were supposed to do. After that was done. I said to the guitarist how about if we record what we were doing in the morning. He said it was just somethingsomething but it was nice. And so we did another 15min of just having fun.

Casuals saying that Chad knew this song are clearly clueless. They don’t know that the RHCP create most of their music by IMPROVISING. Chads band “bombastic meatbats” IMPROVISE. Chad has been playing for more than 3 DECADES. He knows song structures like the back of his hand. It’s not hard for him to figure out the 3 count and anticipate transitions from verse, to chorus, to bridge, to breakdown, to the end of a song. Rhcp literally start every show with improvised jams that include build ups, break downs, high points, and low points just by listening to each other and the music being played.

Truely a professional drummer. He doesn’t cover up his mistakes or attempt to be perfect. He is having a good time and exploring his drum set not trying to play it safe. He just keeps going and making great runs.

Chad Smith has a video talking about ghosting the bass being his style haha so your bang on, it’s on drumeo. And he plays with his whole body and I think that’s part of it, I even see his face playing drum and I love it. Saw the chilli peppers on their stadium Arcadian tour and they did all their old hits and the whole new album with a massive oncore. They put on an epic show and each one of them is epic in their own right.

This is a perfect example of a drummer with incredible talent and one who's just very good. He jumped into that song, no first pass to get a feel, and was so close to the actual song is nuts!!😮 And my God does he hit hard!

I've had a lot of reactions to this one pop up the past couple days. You're the first one who didn't seem to be under the impression that he was hearing the full track. Another great reaction vid. Thanks for sharing!

I've seen these before by drumeo. They are always a drumless listen through. Otherwise you'd just recreate the drum part!

He's the only one in this whole series that just dove right in garage band jam style. All the others would listen to and take notes and stuff then play along.
