Deep Red (1975) Goblin also does the score Bird With The Crystal Plumage (1970) Other Giallo films Don't Torture a Duckling (1972) Lucio Fulci director. Yes Fulci made a few Giallos. Torso (1973) Sergio Martino director A Bay of Blood (1971) aka Twitch of the Death Nerve. Maria Bava director. From imdb "The original Friday the 13th (1980) and Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981) pay homage to this film by lifting two murders from it (one in each movie), almost shot for shot. The locations in all three films look similar.

Argento actually commented that a big inspiration for Susperia was Walt Disney cartoons. That is why he went for the super saturated mostly primary Technicolor palate. Also if you look at the characters you can almost see the heroine as Snow White and the headmistress as The Red Queen from Alice in Wonderland.

it wasn't just for nervousness. It was to have actors move in a way that works well with the soundtrack. This was the Italian method. David Lynch does this apparently as well.

Love Suspiria, saw it for the first time about a decade ago when I was in my early 20s and instantly could see why so many people adore it. It was very unsettling and seemed to have this beautifully twisted fairytale quality about it that reminded me a bit of the fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm that I used to hear all the time when I was growing up.

You HAVE to get the Synapse blu ray. I just saw their restoration at the theatre and it’s amazing. The colours are finally corrected and everything is cleaned up. The best part is that they have a sound mix that hasn’t been released on home media yet. (People talking on the left side of the screen only are heard on the left speakers. If they’re walking, it moves from left to right. It’s jarring and even better with the new sound mix.)

I, too, saw this movie for the first time this year (well, January 2018, so about a month after you). Anyway, I couldn't agree with you more. It's one of the best horror movies I've ever seen, and just a great feat of movie-making in general. If you can, pick up the Synapse films version, as it's loaded with special features, and is a beautiful transfer (I actually spoke with one of the co-owners of Synapse when I was ordering the movie, and they were the company that did the 4K screenings in theaters; he was very proud of the release, as he should be). Other Argento/Italian horror films I would recommend: Argento: Deep Red, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, and the criminally under-rated Four Flies on Grey Velvet. Anything by Lucio Fulci - House by the Cemetery, City of the Living Dead, Zombie, and The Beyond are all more in the vein of classic horror; he also did a giallo called "Don't Torture a Duckling" which is pretty disturbing. Mario Bava - Kill, Baby, Kill; Bay of Blood; Blood and Black Lace Italian in general: Demons (which was produced by Argento), and there's a giallo called "Short Night of Glass Dolls" which I really loved.
@drissabderrhamane7948

A masterpiece with « Deep red ». Suspiria is a masterpiece, a stabbing as the French critic Thorel pointed out. One of the last films in Technicolor. The formal work is breathtaking. Everything goes there. References to Esher and Kokoschka. A sublime chromatic delirium in the service of the esoteric form very popular in the cinema of the 70s. A little nod to the giallo that Argento raised to the rank of art with Deep red a year before. The plot goes to the background because the real language is that of the image. Argento perfectly succeeds in the process of identification of the spectator with his heroes who learn to see to solve the riddles. We must also learn to look like aesthetes, not to dwell on the appearances of a perfectly smooth and soporific scenario. The metafilmic dimension is so obvious. No wonder that Argento is a reference for Tarantino. Argento was in a state of grace until inferno. Maybe until Tenebrae, let's be nice.

Drumdums bunch of good actors in the remake too and it made Quentin Tarantino cry. The use of colors in the original the only way to watch this is on a 4K looks great like it was filmed yesterday. The dubbed was good too like good bad and the ugly.

I actually just watched this film, for the first time ever, tonight. Your channel is the ONLY reason I decided to do so. Loved it! I understand what you say about the cinematography .It was a beautiful film and the score was amazing. I grew up as a kid watching horror films because my parents knew they didn't disturb me. Were you the same way? Did you parents allow you to watch horror films as a child and did you allow your own children to watch them too at a young age? As a matter of fact, non horror films scared me as a child surprisingly such as "The Neverending Story" Crazy but true. God Bless.

Great commentary on an absolute top 10 horror film of all time. As for versions of the film, I'm really salivating over getting the newest 4k version. I'm sure you've heard that they are remaking Suspiria for 2018 with Chloe Grace Moretz and Dakota Johnson. I'm very skeptical of course, but at least an Italian is directing it. Maybe there's hope it will at least be somewhat good. Truth be told though, I'd rather just see the original in full high def restoration on the big screen like you said. Oh, by the way, it is not uncommon in Italian (and other European countries) cinema for them to have actors that do their lines in their own languages. The dialogue for these actors is dubbed in Italian and/or English in post production. If you watch The Good , The Bad and The Ugly for example, you will notice several of the minor actors, such as the Union soldiers, are not speaking English. These lines of course are later dubbed in.

That chase of the other girl, it was 2 years earlier than "prom night " film, which has one of the very first chase to blonde girls scenes in horror movies, so this is a + for suspiria.

Vat of Razor Wire, ya this movie scared me for life at 10 yrs old.. my day was a nut bringing me to see this so young. Along with Halloween and Carey. But he made a true horror fan out of me. I'm really looking forward to the remake of this too which is by a director very similar to Argento and very much sticking with the dreamy artsy style of the original.

Suspiria is is only the first part of Dario Argento''s Three Mothers trilogy. The second film was released in the early 80's and called Inferno. The last one came out from Dimension Extreme, it's Mother of Tears. All three are directed by Argento.

And yes I would have loved to have been able to see this in a theater, Soo sad I didn't. In my top ten list of favorite horror films, right up there with John Carpenter's The Thing, and Nosferatu.

great review mate, i just re-watch just as im typing this, is still creepy as hell and damn does kills are nasty and bloody, the music is what make it creepy, i give it a 9/10, and this also on my top 10 list of horror films in case you didnt know suspiria is part of a trilogy which is the three mother trilogy, the 2 other movies are called Inferno and The Mother of Tears, i own all 3 movies, inferno is great, but mother of tears is not so great, i didnt mind it, it just Dario Argento fans hated it and called it one his worst films

I’ve heard a lot about this one. I tried to rent it on Amazon a while back, but it wasn’t available. The clips you added remind me of a Nicolas Winding Refn film. I agree when witch movies are done right they’re scary! Great review Lee! I’ll add this to my list to purchase, especially since you put it in the same category as The Exorcist.
