Bruce wrote this while recording Darkness on the Edge of Town. This was an incomplete song, a chorus and some mumbled verses. Jimmy Iovine was producing her Easter album and was also engineering Bruce's album. He asked Bruce if he could bring this over to Patti.

The drummer is Jay Dee Daugherty; indeed dude sets the underlying orchestration of the song with those amazing pickup fills. To be admired for keeping that tempo pounded literally into the ground - it's one of those torch ballads a band could otherwise easily speed-off on, if left unchecked

He wrote the music and the chorus. She wrote the lyrics. They were both recording albums with thecsame producer. Bruce wasn't planning on recording the song, so Jimmy Iovine asked if he coukd give it to Patti as he really wanted to get her a hit. It became a hit.

You said it was too short. In 1978 I was listening to a NYC FM radio station, one where they let the DJs play whatever they wanted. The DJ said that he was going to play Patti Smith's latest release, "Because the Night". He played it, and they he played it again, and again, and again ... I'm not certain how many times he played it in a row but it had blown him, and me, away.
@jpmnewyork

I'd be curious to know which station that was. I assume it had to be WNEW-FM, but by '78 I'm sure they were enforcing a playlist. Unless it was WBAI?
@lawrencewestby9229

@@jpmnewyork It was Vin Scelsa on WNEW-FM. I believe it was still mostly free form although they may have had a list of "suggested" songs. Who knows whether Vin would adhere to that, though. I also remember their 1979 (I think) calendar where the DJs recreated various album covers and Vin Scelsa did the cover of "Easter", not a pretty sight. 🙂

@@lawrencewestby9229 Aha! Yes, Vin was in a class by himself. I miss his "Idiot's Delight" to this day, though in '78 he was doing a regular shift. In fact, my most bittersweet memory is, it was from Vin I found out that John Lennon was dead. I had put the radio on as soon as I heard a report on TV that Lennon had been shot. Will never forget that night.

The band has a very E-Street sound to it. Even the lead guitar break is Springsteen-like. The drums are very Max Weinbergish and the piano is similar to Roy Bittan. I think the lyrics are the main collaboration but musically, it is very much how the E-Street band sounded at the time of this recording

Not really a cover. Springsteen wrote the music and the chorus , but he was having trouble with the verses so he set it aside. Jimmy Iovine was working on Darkness on the Edge of Town for Bruce, but he was also working on Easter for Patti Smith. Iovine got Springsteen to allow him to give the cassette of the song to Patti Smith. Patti Smith wrote the verses for her version. She's a co-writer on her version. Springsteen later finished his own verses for the version that he played live. It's 100% written by Springsteen. The song was never on a Springsteen solo album.
