@@L33Reacts Great! I highly recommend you read the lyrics first for Turn of the Century. This piece is a bit of a rarity for Jon Anderson and Yes where the lyrics paint a somewhat more cohesive story/scene than a lot of other Yes works. Steve Howe played a Fender pedal steel on this; that's how he could get such high notes in the solos. The album also marked the return of Rick Wakeman into the fold and he's doing all kinds interesting things throughout the song. Jon Anderson's voice had gotten higher pitched between 1974 and 1977, which is amazing, considering most singers voices get lower in pitch as they age. Chris Squire holds the whole thing together along with his battery mate, Alan White, may God rest their souls. Great reaction, L33. I always look forward to YESSATURDAY!

I saw Yes in 1977 on the “Going for the one” tour at the University of Illinois campus when I was in high school. I was a huge Steve Howe fan and a guitar played (still am)! To my great surprise at the time, they opened with this song and Howe is playing a Pedal Steel 🎸 guitar to get that sound! Put yourself in the shoes of a Yes fan when this album came out. You had both The Yes Album and Fragile in 1971, and Close to the Edge in '72. Awesome! Then 1973 brought Tales, Wakeman leaves, and in '74 came Relayer. Safe to say both of these albums were somewhat divisive for fans. Then Yes takes 3 years off, leaving fans to wonder if the band is done, and if they do come back, who knows what they are going to sound like this time?! They get an album with a naked dude on the cover, which might not have done much to ease their fears, although Wakeman being back might be a good sign? They drop the needle on side 1, and are greeted with this song, which is an absolute celebration of all things that Yes are "supposed" to be, in a concise package. Yes is back, baby!!! Then in '78 they release Tormato and break up again. 😞 Which brings us to 1980 and Drama, which I don't believe you have dipped into yet. While I am on board with you checking out more of GftO, don't sleep on Drama, which I think is a very underappreciated album. Yeah, I get it, Jon isn't there, so it sounds different, but judged on its own merits, I think it holds up nicely. Start with either Machine Messiah or Tempus Fugit, but definitely listen to both of those tracks eventually.

On Tales, when they created the 4 songs, initially each song was at very different track lengths, but they were too long in total to fit onto 1 vinyl record, but too short in total for a double album. They had a tour scheduled and had to get the album done, so they rushed through filling each song out. Usually they composed and recorded each song very carefully and took their time, but they were forced into padding it and rushing through the extra stuff. Regardless, I think it worked out great anyway, amazing album. However Going For The One is my fave album, every song is perfect.

This album was my xmas present to my brothers when it was published. I was ten years old. There’s something melancholically far away in the use of the reverb effect on the steel guitar in the second part of this song, which recalls me some parts of And you and I… Two songs from this album stand out in my opinion: wond’rous stories and parallels I think Parallels was recorded in a church in Switzerland, where the band found a wonderful organ Rick played in that song

I agree.....Oceans was very deliberate....this song and the album is very precise to the point!!! This song is the opening song on the album and "Awaken" is the altro song of the album!!! and thank you for answering my request. The next song Turn of The Century is a romantic Love song of a famous Sculptor Rodin which get anyone very emotional...It is about the most Beautiful song Yes has ever composed!!! Look Out!!!It will be your favorite!!!

At this point I would like to suggest two other “simple but energetic” songs from Yes: "Tempus Fugit" (from the album "Drama". Be careful! With the "Buggles" replacing Anderson and Wakeman) kzitem.info/news/bejne/17CuwK5_ooFpZ44 "I'm Running" (from the album "Big Generator". Trevor Rabin plays guitar) kzitem.info/news/bejne/qHya0aZomId8mnY ... sorry, another suggestion; Trevore Rabin just comes to mind. He just released a new solo album ("Rio"). My favorite song from the album is the song “Push”. kzitem.info/news/bejne/1pqmvIR4a2RkgmU Absolutely worth listening to!

Continue with the album! There is still a lot of great music to explore on it. Another suggestion I have is "America", Yes's proggy cover rendition of a classic Paul Simon tune but "Yesified" You'll see what I mean if you listen to it. 😄

@@L33Reacts I think you mentioned in this video that Yes is really versatile. I think this Going for the One album strongly demonstrates that versatility and variety in their output. The songs vary widely in style.

I don't know if you heard about this or not, but in 1973 when Rick was getting bored with the recording sessions for Tales from Topographic Oceans, he went down the hall and sat in with Black Sabbath's recording session for their album Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. He ended up playing the piano for the song 'Sabbra Cadabra' and almost joined Sabbath. It's a great song. You should check it out!

yeah bro another yes, thanks man! And yeah this one is with Rick Wakeman again. Totally agree with you on his soundscapes. Rick, Vangelis, Michael Stearns and Jean Michel Jarre , all 70's 80's keyboardists never rivalled in sound ever since. I think it's because today's musi format is too compressed and short to actually exploit the keyboards full potential for moods, interludes and dreamy or psychedelic soundscapes. But still it's a very underused instrument

Overall production is, IMO, the best of classic era Yes, certainly superior in every respect to Topographic. There is clean space between all the instruments and voices (except maybe in the long repeated section before the coda); Chris is playing a Rickenbacker, but it's an 8-string (a prototype at the time, which comes back on Awaken - don't let anyone tell you he played the Wem triple-neck on the album itself!), but as a drummer I think you should also re-listen to Alan's snare throughout - both lazy AND moving.along

This is great live, I've seen and heard it. They kicked Patrick Moraz out of the band during the early stages of this album and brought Wakeman back in.
