Neil was grunge 20 years before people called it grunge. That's why they named him the Godfather of Grunge
@louise_rose

Very true, he had both the look, the bluesy, grainy sound and the spunky, down-to-earth cool attitude. Here's another example: "After Berlin" was written in 1982 and meant to be on the forward-looking "Trans" album, but left off that one (likely due to similarities with the ballad "Like an Inca" which closes the album) and Neil and Crazy Horse only performed it once in public - in West Berlin, towards the end of 1982. It was an encore at that show (a great concert which survives on DVD) and Neil's tale of uncertainty and loss is fused together with allusions to the city of Berlin and the threat of nuclear war. Great track: kzitem.info/news/bejne/w3p40m19jXl7fm0 It's even better on the video of course, where you can see the visibly moved Berlin audience and their reaction as Neil pays homage to their city, and great solos be Neil and Nils Lofgren - the DVD also has superb versions of Like a Hurricane and After the Gold Rush, I really recommend it! :)

Incredibly cool Neil story here, as told by Graham Nash: “The man is totally committed to the muse of music. And he’ll do anything for good music. And sometimes it’s very strange. I was at Neil’s ranch one day just south of San Francisco, and he has a beautiful lake with red-wing blackbirds. And he asked me if I wanted to hear his new album, “Harvest.” And I said sure, let’s go into the studio and listen. Oh, no. That’s not what Neil had in mind. He said get into the rowboat. I said get into the rowboat? He said, yeah, we’re going to go out into the middle of the lake. Now, I think he’s got a little cassette player with him or a little, you know, early digital format player. So I’m thinking I’m going to wear headphones and listen in the relative peace in the middle of Neil’s lake. Oh, no. He has his entire house as the left speaker and his entire barn as the right speaker. And I heard “Harvest” coming out of these two incredibly large loud speakers louder than hell. It was unbelievable. Elliot Mazer, who produced Neil, produced “Harvest,” came down to the shore of the lake and he shouted out to Neil: How was that, Neil? And I swear to god, Neil shouted back: More barn!” I mean, Neil is a living fucking legend. More barn!! What a badass to have set up the lake-listening situation in the first place. We should all build our lives in such a manner that will allow us to yell “MORE BARN” at least once, you know? Cheers, Dignan

Here’s a song that you may have heard before. This song “I Don’t Want To Talk About It”, was written by Danny Whitten and recorded in 1971 with his band Crazy Horse. This is one of my favorite all time songs. They were already at that time Neil Young’s backing band. Whitten began using heroin; after finding that it mitigated his longstanding battle with rheumatoid arthritis, he quickly became addicted. Danny was unable to learn the music timely because of his addiction and Neil Young fired him from the band on November 18, 1972. He gave Whitten $50 and a plane ticket back to Los Angeles. Later that night Whitten died from ingesting a combination of diazepam, which he was taking for severe knee arthritis, and alcohol, which he was using to try to get over his heroin addiction. In 1975, Rod Stewart recorded Danny’s song, “I Don’t Want to Talk About It” for his 1975 album Atlantic Crossing. It was released as a single in 1977, and it topped the singles chart in the United Kingdom. Rod has been singing it ever since. “I Don’t Want to Talk About It” - Crazy Horse kzitem.info/news/bejne/tZqmzqCmhal-aYYsi=2EnF6AjKnBfF8ORF

Pretty much any song from the Rust Never Sleeps film (1978) is great. It's Neil Young & Crazy Horse meets Star Wars, basically. I recognize this clip because part of it was used in the documentary Year Of The Horse. It cuts from a 1996 version of Like A Hurricane (with a bizarre free-form noise intro, duplicating what a hurricane sounds like) into the '77 footage for most of the song, and then back to '96.

Neil has some epic jams, unlike most performers. One of my favorites is "Southern Man" live with CSNY in 1971 where Stills and Young take turns jamming to powerful song. Don't let the hurricane in life define you. You have a Father in heaven that wants to help you thru life, to focus on what's important, and use your trials to help others. You're here for a purpose. L33, when you are watching "Rust Never Sleeps" don't let the grainyness of the film stock bother your viewing experience. It was just that bad in the late 70's. Neil used the best film he could get, and that was it. I gave that same Blu-Ray DVD to my three brothers for Christmas last year, they were all very happy. "Like A Hurricane" was one of the first songs where I knew Neil was a great lyricist as well as a great musician.
