All the time he was walking around the stage there were no drums on that rear catwalk, until he got about ten feet away... They came up through the floor. Perfect timing for that iconic drum drop. Great performances also - not only from the other musicians on set, but the sound and lighting crew. Everyone came together to give a performance second to none. Thanks for posting.

Th white bearded guy is the famous bass guitarist Leland Sklar (American bassist and session musician). who has played with other famous/great music groups like the Bee Gees, Toto, The Section, Era, & Rick Roberts band. To name a few. It is such a sad thing that Phil can no longer play the drums live! due to severe health, i.e. spinal condition (after a spinal injury in 2007). If you're interested there is a lot of information online about Phil Collins and his life and health. All of his children are talented. His sons Nicholas & Simon are following in Phil's footsteps as two additional great drummers. His youngest son is pursuing his dreams to play football.

What’s interesting, if you go back & watch, the song is about his ex wife’s betrayal of their marriage. I truly believe why there’s so much intensity. On the close up “I remember, don’t worry” and a couple times during close ups, there’s a lot of anger in that intensity. He looks like he’s playing the whole thing back in his head as he sings, then the release of that anger in the way he positively assaults those drums

I'm always amazed that people don't know or forget that Phil is a DRUMMER who can sing. And also how steady his voice is when he plays is also AMAZING. The dark lyrics and moody drum sounds reflected the anger and sadness the musician felt leading up to and following their 1980 divorce. Collins has explained that the drowning is symbolic, representing the pain and anger he was feeling at the time. The line really connected as a rebuke, entering the lexicon along with sayings like "I wouldn't give you the time of day" and "not if you were the last person on Earth."
@Caolan-b6r

That must have been amazing! My dad use to enjoy Phil Collins and Genesis but unfortunately he passed away 19 years ago. Would love to know what he would have been still listening to these days. He loved Queen, led zeppelin and bands like that. I grew up listening to very heavy music and that what I mainly enjoyed for many years but now I've noticed I've missed out on such fantastic music. My mom showed my what Phil looks like now. I couldn't believe it. His health has taken a turn. @ShaneAlanGower interesting fact. Phil actually damaged, I believe it was 2 vertabra, during that particular tour you reacted to. From the intensity of that performance on drums. It was from that injury that he started having problems. Now, his son is carrying his father's legacy of drumming. If you haven't already done so, you may enjoy seeing him perform. Queen was another concert we saw at Sun City, around 1981/2. Also, next level talent. I would recommend you watch 'Somebody to love' live in Montreal 1981, if you have not already done so. Anyway, enjoy going down the rabbit hole of my generations music. We were spoiled for choice. If my grandkids play our music, then that is a stamp of approval right there

I LOVE watching another passionate musician react to those of the likes of someone who plays the same instrument! This guy is one I’ll be subscribing to watching! Unless you’re in some form of art such as music, and I been for most of my life, it’s tough to truly appreciate the artists, their emotions and efforts that all go into a work such as this! Phil Collins is THE great! Another suggestion would be Genesis together with Collins! Another group of artists I’d watch for one of the greatest vocalist, guitarist and keyboards, acoustic at that is Journey live from the time ‘70’s and ‘80’s! “Wheel in the Sky” offers all three in one AND the vocalist accompanying the guitarist, demonstrating both of their tremendous talents! I love Phil Collins but I also grew into my late teen years with them! I do NOT like the vocalists that came after Steve Perry!!! Thank for enjoying this tune and sharing with all of us!

Phil is a 'Prog Rock' God having played with Genesis from the early 70s. You gotta check out his live Genesis dual drumming with Chester Thompson. Checkout the live Rome open air gig in 2007 in front of half a million people it is insane. It is amazing how many have never heard of Phil before along with Genesis he has sold over 300 million albums! yes 300 million! He took over from another legend Peter Gabriel as lead singer in 1975. Again checkout the live old Genesis medley of In The Cage/Cinema Show/ Dukes Travels/Afterglow it is off the charts!

Nice reaction! As a younger man, I was lucky enough to see both Phil Collins and Don Henley sing live. It is hard to put into words seeing someone sing and drum at the same time and do it soo effortlessly. Though I know it took them many hours of practice to make the music that smooth and knowing that soo many singers today use auto-tune and other gimmicks today to sound good, just makes me cherish those concerts that much more. Thanks for sharing!
