I played with a guitar player who set the tempo for each song in practice and I made sure I wrote them down. Started each song on the practiced tempo, he'd stop playing, come over and change it. Sometimes faster, sometimes slower, several times every time we played together..

😂 This was so good. One time, I was playing drums for a conference with a totally different band that played old school gospel. The keyboard player was also the lead singer, so I’m over in my drum corner, spiced it up with a few accents and rolls, she gets super close to the mic in the middle of singing the song and tells me “KEEP A STRAIGHT BEAT!” 🤣

@@jaimejones1590 I disagree. Accents can come strictly from the high hat or a dry splash. I started out as a drummer, but been a bass player for about 30 yeas now. Sometimes, I will fill in on drums. One time I played with this group and brought my whole kit. They were flashy musicians. By the second set, they wanted more "flash" on the drums. So, I gave them a tasge. The next day I used a kick, snare, high hat, splash, ride and two crashes. No toms at all. I played the same way, but just worked my high hat and crash. They agreed it was much better. Pocket beats flash all day, every day. I only did it to prove a point.
