I haven't played the drums for a while but the Glynn Johns method reminds me so much of sitting behind a kit. There's a space and balance to everything.

Interesting how much the hats moved around in the image… a great example of how much easier one set up could make a mix vs another depending on the arrangement! Knowing ahead of time if it was going to be busy vs sparse could make a huge difference if you get this mic placement technique right!

You have a good ear, all toms are partially covered with felt on top. My problem with Glyn Johns is that I have to get rid of a cymbal. I'm a recorderman fan: lots of spread, SD and BD in the center. XY is the most boring option you can have. MS has always sounded weird to me. ORTF is the most natural approach to stereo. AB is a classic great sound, but fiddly with cymbal height and level. Glyn Johns is punchy and Recorderman is to Glyn Johns what XY is to ORTF. Or that's my take anyway. Btw on the AB, Recorderman and Glyn Johns the stereo image is flipped.

Well, it wasn't that bad. for me it was a journey too. I landed on Recorderman, SD and BD always in the center, a pretty wide stereo image and it is very close to what I hear. Usually with two ribbons. The kit is a diy one, cause here in Switzerland sleischman is not available, plus I like to build stuff. Liebe Grüsse Benno

Kick on that A-B is fantastic. Either A-B or recorderman in this specific sample would go long way with couple of individual mics. Fantastic work! 👍 Glynn Johns is a bit hyped method at this point. The truth is, it is VERY tricky technique in general. It’s cool and all until that one too loud hit on floor Tom or ride at the wrong moment. Yeah if lucky you might be able to edit/replace but that’s another subject…

Other mic techniques make drums sound too narrow even though they have some benefits over AB (like better mono compatibility or snare focus) but once you add close mics and eq them it beats everything else

Love the Glynn Johns technique, but it does require a lot of discipline on the drummer to play consistently and not over work stuff. If the part is too busy and recorded that way it can be hellishly difficult to make it sit in a mix without the drums becoming the entire focus. But maybe that's what's needed.

Taking into account both sound and imaging, something in between A-B and ORTF would be ideal to me. AB was maybe a little too wide and a bit on the bright side, while ORTF was a good compromise image-wise, but the sound was rather muddy.

My preferred has been the Glyn Johns when it comes to use only the 3 mics expected. But when it starts to add close mics, in toms, snare, etc, I find myself in very trouble with phase issues, mostly with toms, who cancel themselves between OH and close mics.

OK, the "Glyn Johns" sounds the best. I am assuming that is a mic above&behind, and a mic over the toms on the drummers right side... There is no eq on the high end? why are the high hats quieter in the mix? I would think over head would get some extra HIGH END FREQS from the high hats! But maybe the other mic set ups are getting extra high end from the room, and the "Glyn Johns" set up is deceptively DIRECT on the DRUMS? IMHO

Glyn Johns is usually with three mics: one over the snare, one on the side on the floor tom, and one in front of the kit over the bass drum. A equal distance and pointing to the snare. I used the '2/3'- variant of that without the Bass drum. Liebe Grüsse Benno

Sehr cool, ich hab Drum Overheads noch nie in ORTF aufgenommen, aber das klingt hier für mich eindeutig am besten. Schöne Breite, trotzdem gutes Center. Probiere ich auf jeden Fall mal aus. Wie war die "Kipp-Ebene", im Video sieht es etwas senkrechter als 45° aus. Und ungefähr über dem Kopf oder weiter hinten? Auch sehr geil getrommelt. Danke!

If you are listening on a mono output, like a iPhone, you won't hear a big difference. On a stereo system you should! And if not, maybe audio is not for you. Liebe Grüsse Benno
