IgNobel committee has consistently proven that they don't understand placebo/ nocebo studies (this isn't their first award in this area). Understanding placebo effects is so important in drug development because the new drugs need to work better than older/ competitors' ones and for this you need to know how much of efficacy can be ascribed to placebo. (During clinical trials, placebo effect is also being investigated.) Understanding what triggers placebo is also very umportant (answer, almost anything, from the colour of the medicines, mode of deluvery to belief in horoscopes). So, this year's award makes a lot of sense to me and frankly, I find it valuable. And that levitating frog experiment? The guys went to win a real Nobel prize with it (for discovering graphene).
@kramelbbiw

The Ig Nobel Prizes are awarded for things that seem bizarre at first glance, but are highly relevant for business and progress. Therefore, it's highly likely that they understand placebo, and see the study as potentially contributing greatly to future developments/progress 👍

Wow! My birth certificate has always read that I was born in 1948, and I celebrated (?) my 76 birthday earlier this month. I feel old, especially when I look at how things have changed since my childhood, but this last ignoble study has given me hope. What if my birth certificate is a phoney? I was born on a Caribbean island only 16 miles north of Venezuela and we have learned about the corruption problems they have endured. My birth island was a Dutch colony when I was born, but my parents were American citizens so I somehow ended up with an American passport, and a Dutch birth certificate issued in Aruba, which since 1986, is an island nation. I also have a Certificate of Live Birth issued in New York that is dated in 1950, but with a birthdate again in 1948. I always get funny looks from bureaucrats who examine my proof of citizenship. Born in 1948 but the birth wasn't recorded until 1950? "It looks kind of squirrely," said a Mexican customs official. "Were you hiding out for a couple of years, somewhere?" He laughed. I always answer truthfully in these situations because you can get in a lot of trouble for making a false statement.."Yes sir," I replied, "I was on stuck on a desert island." He told me I could go. I got away with it that last time, but maybe he was right? It does seem strange, and what does squirrely mean? Maybe this birth certificate is wrong. It could be that they're both phoney and I'm not really 76, but younger. Maybe I was born in 1950? I don't remember anything until Eisenhower was the president. My parents called him "General" and "Ike." I like Ike.. I remember that. But maybe that was his second election in 1956? If I was two, I might still be in my 60's. Yes, I feel younger than 76. Where can I get hold of my real birth certificate, does that paper say? 🧙🏽♂️🇺🇸💙💙💙

@@sharonminsuk well, it was Elvis and lots of saxophone themes. But, in high school something wonderful happened. On a cold Monday in April, Beatlemania exploded at the high school, in our downtown, the library, on WABC radio, where everyone I knew listened to Cousin Brucie doing their homework after dinner -- even those who didn't do their homework... Beatlemania was everywhere at once! The Beatles were still in Manhattan for a second appearance, and the talk at school all week was where, where were they staying? Many classmates knew the big NY hotels and there was discussion all week -- it was the Waldorf, no it was the Plaza. I don't remember all the places where they must be staying, but it was so interesting. There was something very special about these guys. Afterwards, British music, bands from England -- the Kinks, the Animals, the Stones, this became fascinating. I know how old I am, every morning when I first move out of my reclining chair. That's where I've slept for years because the bed has become impossible for sleeping. Life hurts when you're old. I always appreciate kind people like yourself who check in with me after i post these ridiculous stories, half true, half fantasy in response to Anton's videos and other KZitemrs that publish quality videos. I have an old body, and a couple of old birth certificates, but I still enjoy my child-mind, have fun writing silly stories, or spinning fantasies with my young children as Dad, and their children as Papa. I loved watching their faces while they considered my nonsense, and finally playing "gotcha" as they discovered the irony and impossibility of my tales. We all must mature and discover wisdom for ourselves. Maybe that's what life is all about? I don't know, but I want you all to never lose your childhood silliness, your sense of wonder about what is possible, your hope for the future, and your confidence in truth as you know it. Of course, open your mind to facts. We must discern reality. We can't be fooled again. The child-mind is a powerful imaginary space, a place of relief and safety, but may also contain secrets that you may have not understood then while growing up, but can contain clues for solving the problems we face as adults, today. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. 🧙🏼♂️🇺🇲🇺🇦🙏🏼💙💙💙

As for the 'bottom breathers': It makes sense. The intestinal tract is full of bloodvessels, meant to exchange nutrients. There is no reason why oxygen and CO2 wouldnt exchange there. And its 50 feet long. The surface wont be as much as lung tissue, but significant and enough. Ofc the tract has to be relatively empty. And you'll have to do the breathing by external machinery, bc there are no muscles to simulate breathing. So blow air in and get it back out. Puting food in your lungs will be less succesfull. It will also be quite the task to learn to speak through the back exit. Its going to be a lot of BS.

Also yes the pigeon project in ww2 was used as a way to guide a missile and even Mythbusters tested this and even in ww2 studies show they were surprisingly very accurate and could of actually worked if the project turned into reality
@StofStuiver
Күн бұрын
For the botanica one: Obviously it cannot be information exchange on a dna level, as it also happens to artificial (ie plastic) plants, which is chemically completely different. They should have tested it with a repetitive shape, that doesnt resemble plant leaves. Secondly, plants dont have eyes and no neural network. But Light is of great importance as it drives plant metabolism. Since a reaction to light is the same as in seeing, you could argue plants can see. That brings me to how this probably works: Some plants like shade (indirect light) more than direct sunlight. Leaves grow on this plant, but the cells in the leaves that get direct sunlight, will be less efficient than those that do not receive direct sunlight. Normally plants may drop those leaves, but it is possible by chemical reaction that those leaves form as light is optimum IN each leave region. That then means that parts of a leave that are shaded (ofc it depends on where the sun is, but can still be this mechanism) do well, while parts of the leave that are not shaded optimum do poor. If the plants stops growth there, the leaves will take the shape of whatever provides the shade. And so it seems to mimic other plants. It mimics anything that provides the right amount of shade. Well it wont be exactly mimicing, but outlining that shade. A second mechanism is that leaves will be symmetrical, so one side that mimics, may turn up on the other side of the leave aswell. And a third mechanism may be that there may be an evolutionary other benefit in that when there is shade over a plant, it means another plant is 'ahead'. It may not 'want' to be ahead, but it is not beneficial to be eaten. Since fresh leaves are usually on top and animals prefer those to old leaves, it is beneficial to seem the same plant, but lower, so less appetizing. Which would drive a proces of repeating the pattern thats shaded throughout the plant. It is beneficial.

The age one seems incredibly obvious when you think about it. Most records 100+ years ago were kept at home, if they were even recorded in the first place. People hand wrote them, often in illegible handwriting. Combine that with the memory problems that come with old age, and you can easily see how errors would be common. I'd suspect that within the next 30-50 years, those error rates are going to drop massively.

Sometimes i get weird reverse farts. usually after being sick. Can happen when i try to get rid of the hiccups by exhailing and holding my breath.

CPR on a butt? Where does the defibrillator go? One on each cheek? What do you do after you blow in it, pump the farts out with both hands?

The coin flip is legit! I noticed it waaay back in elementary school, except always slapped the coin on the top of the other hand so it was always opposite the side it started. (well, 9/10 times)

I’m scratching my head as to why Ig Nobel prizes aren’t awarded on April 1st. “This scientific study is totally stupid.” “Fooled you: it’s actually useful.” 😁

Just to "honor" you, I think the home version of the anal respirator should be named the Petrov home respirator. I wonder whether they tested the coin flip with the coin staring on edge. Previous investigators have already shown that flipping a cat starting in the upright position verifies the theory, with an extremely low p factor (15 sigmas). However, flipping a piece of buttered (or peanut buttered, or jellied) toast, starting from the butter/peanut butter/jelly on top, demonstrates that toast has a 95%+ chance of doing a 180, 540, 900, ... degree turn along a thick axis whilst airborne.

Honestly, breathing through butts is less controversial than Okabe's other experiment with bananas and microwaves...

So, as a followup to the purple sky at night in Mildura and Wangaratta phenomenon, I was attempting to stargaze with Anna Warren/Simpson, and their observation was that the stars were visible. Seeing as you know about the atomic clock radio network, can you verify or vilify the United Nations report on Voice to Brain/Skull, and various related signals?

Butt respiration may sound gross, but if we had this (potential) technology available in 2020 it might have saved millions of lives. Intubation is a hazardous process which does not always work well enough. Sticking some sort of gas exchange tubes up a patient's butt could be a far less hazardous process that could be done well before a patient's status deteriorates to the point intubation would be deemed necessary.
