Founded in 1150 by Premonstratensian monks, Dryburgh Abbey in the Scottish Borders was a significant religious institution dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It thrived as a center of worship, learning, and agricultural activity for centuries.
However, it faced adversity during the Scottish Reformation, suffering partial destruction in 1544 during the War of the Rough Wooing and eventual abandonment by monks in 1560 due to the dissolution of monastic orders.
Today, Dryburgh Abbey stands as a historic ruin, revered for its medieval architecture and as the final resting place of Sir Walter Scott, the renowned Scottish novelist, making it a place of cultural and historical importance.
