I love having found your videos renovating the Mill. I visited the Mill last year with a fanciful idea of doing the same. But it scared me rigid when I saw the condition. But it really needs saving from the elements. The neighbours across the road are lovely and gave me shelter on a very rainy day on my bike. I will be over again on my bike when conditions allow. Good wishes to you and your little family. X

The dog is such an adorable addition in this video! My husky sends her sniffs and tail wags! :)

Would you do a video on what it takes for you to get from your home to the mill? Or the things that make the trip easy or difficult? Also, do you have a link to the PAPR you're using?

We'll be doing a video as we drive up for the move to the island, then we are staying in a holiday let a couple of miles (other side of the island) away from the mill. I get this: www.trenddirectuk.com/air-pro-airshield-pro-respirator-kit-with-8hr-battery - I think I paid about £120 for it when it was on special on another site. 3M versaflow was a bit too pricy for me, though it is much better.

Great video as always. I'm surprised you didn't go with a dehumidifier as opposed to the heater. I expect that would be something useful at the mill as well. EDIT: Oh wait, I see you addressed that in another comment. Maybe point the heater at the dehumidifier to keep it from freezing? :)

Dehumidifers are great for taking moisture out of warm air, but terrible at dealing with cold, and don't change the vapour pressure of liquid water much. If you dampness, they can help, if you have pools of water they cannot - you have to get the water to evaporate - so a heater is much more effective at getting water to a point it wants to evapourate

A collie! Don't see them often. Might be worth putting rubber sheets or something once the bed is sealed, to help protect it a bit.

Just found you about an hour ago, great and informative video's! Was the cost difference between a floor sander and a belt sander prohibitive?

Welcome aboard! With covid/lockdown/living in a rural village a floor sander wasn't really an easy option. Belt sander was easy enough.

Belt sanders can give you a nastily bite when you get tired and careless beware.

Loving the videos.I know it doesn't really matter now, because who knows how far into the project you've come. I understand you wanted to, in some way, disinfect the box floor by sanding it, but why make the floor planks even, i mean as soon as you put something heavy inside it, its all going to be messed up again, which shouldn't worry you, that's why they put planks in cargo areas, they are flexible and easily (cheap) replaced if cracked, it was just too much work for something that is supposed to be a ''work horse'', i mean that's what trucks are for.

The floors were pretty terrible, we didn't want our nice furniture sitting on it (or have the hassle of putting down tarps). There are several large patches of hydraulic fluid which were very soaked through - i have next week's video filmed (took 2 weeks to do, so its good to be a little ahead) - the floors sealed up well, but as you say will get a good bit of use with us moving things around so i haven't been precious about the finish!

I have to wonder how the warped flooring would have caused tipping inside the cargo area on a ferry in troubled waters.

@@apcolleen I only sanded 3-4 mm of each plank to flatten them (ie: 3-4mm on the high spot, 0.2mm off the low spot) so shouldn't have been an issue with the ferry. I just loaded a 600kg oversize pallet into truck on a pallet truck for a machine we sold - definitely would not have wanted to do that with the ridged floors, trying to drive the pallet truck from side to side on the floors would have been so much more challenging (in addition to being on a driveway on a slope!)

How will you seal it? As long as water absorbs though the bottom it will push through from underneath causing surface finishes to fail, unless you have something like a penetrating oil to keep the water out, I'd think? Thinking like a boiled linseed oil from underneath... but never done a vehicle.

You really need a dehumidifier. Not just for that job but also the house. The vacuum thing was a bit ridiculous tbh
@thewatermillscotland

We have two dehumidifers (though both have now died and are being returned), they wouldn't have helped much with the truck if at all - the vacuum cleared a couple of litres of moisture from the truck in minutes, where at near freezing temps, a 40l/day dehumidifier would take days to do that if it operated at all.
