A hole in drywall often has damage around the visible hole; the drywall is weakened inside. By making your patch a little larger than the hole (square, rectangle) you cut-out the damaged area around the hole. And, yes, straight lines are easier to cut than irregular shapes. If one really wants to streamline this. Cut your square of drywall a little larger than the hole. Place your drywall over the hole and trace with a pencil. Then cut-out the tracing so your drywall fits neatly in the hole. The other fake thing about this vid is that it’s hard to hold the supporting wood in the wall by a screw. If the hole is large enough you can just hold the wood with you fingers. If it’s too small to hold by hand, wrap a string, duct tape, whatever, to hold the supporting wood in the wall you screw. And finally, you don’t need very thick wood. Wrap some duct tape where the screws (top, middle, bot trim) will go to keep the wood from splitting. 1/4” thick wood is good enough. I often save old trim wood specifically to repair these holes. Finally, try not to drop the supporting wood in the hole.

I don’t know if this will help you. I drill the screws partially into the drywall (don’t go all the way through) above and below the hole (where your supporting wood will go). So when I place my supporting wood in the walk I’m not fumbling holding a screw or looking for a screw (they’re already there). It’s the fumbling and trying to hold the wood that will go into the wall when I drop it in the wall. I have lived and learned. I go so far as to outline where my supporting wood will go on the wall, so I’m not guessing whether I missed it with my screw or not. “Practice makes good-enough.”

Its so annoying to hear people say, " that's not how you're suppose to do it". There is different ways to get to the finish line. No need to to cut a big ass square out of the wall. The reason you cut out a rectangle instead of an abstract shape is because it'll be annoying when he puts the tape on it (that part he left out). Also, it'll be easier to just cut a square.

not at all. the title says quick and easy so obviously laying down clear tape, tracing the hole, transferring the tape to a drywall piece, cutting out the outline, removing the excess drywall from the patch and install is much faster than squaring the hole, cutting a square patch and install.

This works, but an evolutionary dead end. Cut a small rectangle of drywall slightly bigger than the max height and width of your odd-shaped hole. Bring it inside, hold it over the hole, trace a pencil mark around the rectangle. Now cut THAT shape out of the wall. Then continue with the same support strips method and tape it up. In practice, it's always quicker with less redo, less frustration fitting up. This is just for clicks.

I use a hole saw. As long as diameter of the patch is small enough. Usually a 6 inch diameter. Take the hole saw and make the patch circular. Then use the hole saw to cut a plug out of a piece of new drywall. Works good😊
