@@pittland44 Garak is an honest liar who is lacking compunction but secretly has a deep respect for those with honor. why else would he be helping the federation and starfleet, against his own people and the dominion. The federation is a paragon of virtue and honor, they promote leaders based on gravitas and meritocracy over the dominions obedience to the founders and cruelty towards their enemies. garak respects the federation because of their unwavering devotion to honor, for their principles, their unwillingness to break them for anything or anyone. whereas the dominion and cardassians only pretend to have the high moral ground but then secretly break treaties and attack first or occupy innocent planets to expand their influence and power. Garak lies even to himself and says the ends justify the means but he knows he's wrong and he chooses to aid the federation because he feels guilty for all the bad things he has done, well maybe not bad but he certainly feels some remorse.

He did not, he knows worf plays a big part in Klingon and starfleet affairs. Even if unintentionally he is always in the center one way or another. This is garak's way of teaching him some politics and ingratiating himself as well. At the same time he prefers a Klingon empire run by worf rather than someone else, with worf's only weakness also his strength, a lack of duality and understanding thereof. I love this conversation how worf slowly begins to realize what garak is trying to do, . How he can't admit being thankful to the lesson and at the same time being taught that it is necessary to comb through lies and how easy it is for him to be sold on one. I mean he alread mentioned that garak is a spy, a liar and a saboteur. How I wish we had shows as engaging and layered these days . Garak is the ultimate troll, I adore him. I’ve always particularly loved these two episodes because you see Garak the troll in the beginning, Garak the genuinely vulnerable pained son in the middle, and Garak the brave victor in the end. And because it was Worf that inspired Garak to keep going and overcome his fear and keep working on the transporter, it means a hella lot that Worf acknowledges Garak by saying “You did well” when Garak’s own father could never say it... it’s a really good exchange between two of my faves that we never really see explored again unfortunately.

Harry Kim was an Ensign from the start of Voyager to the end, having left the academy at the start of the show, and still ended up at a lower grade than Nog years after DS9 ended. Jokie155 You do realize that pretty much every member of Starfleet on Voyager ascended a rank or two when they got back right? Janeway became an Admiral, Tuvok received a captaincy, Harry became Lieutenant-Commander and so on. All the others who were originally Marquis had their provisional ranks made permanent, minus Chakotay who also became captain. The reason almost no one changed ranks on Voyager was because they were in the Delta Quadrant. When someone is promoted, you’ll need to find someone else to take their post. But exactly where will you find a replacement crewman/officer when you’re 70,000 light years away from the closest starbase? Janeway put it best to Paris: “Your life could be in danger and we need you!” Even Chakotay admitted that people should be encouraged to have children since it’d take them 75 years to get home, and they’d need a replacement crew in half that time.

"Garak talks to Worf" would have been just as accurate a title and no information would have been lost.

I'd love to see a Cardassisn in Starfleet as well as a Romulan. Klingons we're enimes of federation and Worf joined.

0:36 YES, think how much of an advantage he would be to starfleet, he is already fully trained.

Apparently, they went to the same nebula that Croden went too.

The fact he said it all so fluently and without emotion was the giveaway that he has no interest in joining Starfleet for redemption. It sounded too rehersed, especially when compared to Nog's appeal. Garak is a good enough liar to know this, which means the point was to mess with Worf.

Given the fact he is in love with Dukats daughter at this time, he could easily have used that as motivation to change his image from being a lowly spy and assassin. Worf might have bought into that.

I don't think he was in love with her. She was in love with him, sure. I think he was flattered, and cared for her, but more like a niece.

Garak was trolling Worf, full-stop. And he wanted him to know he was trolling him. He was never trying to get Worf the fully "buy in". He was just trying to lie enough to make a slight dent in Worf's disbelief, and then he purposely went over-the-top for a "gotcha". If you don't understand that this was simply about Garak playing mind games and had Nothing to do with him actually trying to get Worf to recommend him for Star Fleet Academy, you don't understand Garak's character at all... and that makes me rather sad, because he's one of the most brilliant characters developed in the entire ST franchise.

Mr Worf, you are no fun at all is a compliment from Garak. Plus one last needle to try and get an emotional reaction. Worf's taciturn Good makes Garak smile in respect.
