Hopefully they bring him back for the Picard series, the actors still alive. And having Garak's "clarity" would be a interesting counterpoint to Picard, imagine if Picard had to compromise his principles for once, Garak would be delighted and consider it a _moral victory_ (the Romulans being tricked into the Dominion war seems appropriate, Picard would have to keep quite on that, no matter his ideals). Other interesting characters include Ezri Dax, now fully comfortable as Dax and a tough, smart, formidable and perceptive individual that's skilled at playing mind games, manipulation and planning. Like a good version of Hannibal Lecter without the dietary issues. And Julian, are he and Dax still an item. Plus the long term implications of his genetic superiority. And for a twist, what if he's now secretly thrown in with Section 31? And do we really think Slone died, c'mon?

Personally I believe it's almost entirely different from the rest of the Star Trek series, mostly because of what makes it so great, but also the fact that this was the one series that didn't feature strange new worlds in almost every episode, rather it fleshed out the already existing worlds, though of course there are some strange new worlds from the Gamma Quadrant

Drinks are replicated. Pleasantries exchanged. Garak apologizes for getting him locked away in that prison. Then Garak says he's free to go. The Alien is so delighted with the news that he eagerly walks to the door only to have Garak snap his neck before he crosses the room. Then he discreetly reprograms the transporters to beam the body into the cargo hold of a departing ship. By the time anyone noticed, the ship would be halfway to Vulcan.

@bigmeknurgle

Are you stupid? He was the BEST CAPTAIN. This is practically undisputed. People liked Picard because he's Patrick Stuart. People liked Kirk because he's William Shatner. Nobody liked Janeway, too arrogant. Nobody liked Jonathan, too boring. Having performed almost exclusively in made-for-tv movies prior to his role as Sisko, Brooks was practically unknown. As such, the reception of his character was solely based on his performance, not his reputation as an actor. For him, it was sink-or-swim, and he nailed it. Kirk was the Adam West Batman of Star Trek captains, which is why he's memorable. Picard was great, but he shined brightest when interacting with another characters; mainly Riker, Worf, Data and Q. Sisko felt real, relateable. Brooks likely lost out on his two nominated awards due to his obscurity. Every Trekkie I know, back in the 90's and now, regards him as the best and most interesting Star Fleet Captain.

That ending bit is so subtle. Garak basically saying he would rather have died to the Klingons than let Dukat live, if he could do it all again. And that's a man who values his own life over every other life in the universe combined. That's how big his hatred for Dukat was. All of that hidden in what sounded like dumbed down, crystal clear, jarhead logic. The way Garak's dialogue is constructed is so sublime, they make him sound like he's saying one thing, but he's always meaning something completely different. And it's only rarely that the show points it out directly, but almost every piece of dialogue he has uses that 1960's spy novel sort of hidden-speak.

The sad truth is ...... there is NOTHING Benjamin Sisko did wrong in S5. He kept Bajor from being admitted into the Federation (in the episode that DS9 switched to the "First Contact" ST uniforms). He told Bajor to stall in signing the nonaggression pact with the Dominion. He (and his crew) found the only way to keep the Dominion from overrunning the Alpha Quadrant while the Dominion occupied Bajoran space ... and the program that was designed to disable DS9 when they abandoned it probably helped stall efforts to take down the minefield ... AND he kept Bajor from being involved in the war.

Sisko is great and all, but he wouldn't have been allowed to unilaterally decide on behalf of Star Fleet to make the recommendation that Bajor sign the non-aggression pack. Something like that would have come from an Admiral or the President of the federation. It's arguable that we can say a conversation between Sisko and the Federation took place behind the scenes, but since we don't get to see that conversation, I feel like they should have at least said that it happened.

That Ira and Co. made sure to make great use of Andrew J's supreme acting ability is a credit to the entire writing crew for DS9. So many great Trek moments from plain, simple Garak.

When AJR first appeared on DS9, I knew I recognized him from somewhere by his voice. I finally figured out that it was from that Clint Eastwood/Dirty Harry movie where he played a bad guy. By the way, AJR was apparently once the director of the Master of Fine Arts acting program at the University of Southern California. Also, his initial audition for DS9 was for the role of Odo.

I really like to see how Sisko is acting as a Captain and simultaneously acting as a religious leader. You see this with Kira as she's juggling multiple roles with chain of command, her loyalty to Bajor, her inherent role as a guerilla warfare fighter and her loyalties to a Bajroan messiah. The show just throws a lot of complexity as the viewer at the same time and it's wonderful. Any abrasiveness of Kira is forgiven by the fact that Nana Visitor is a good actress, a talented dancer and easy on the eyes... and of course the fact that the writing backs up Kira's actions consistently. You should get why she's edgy at times. Great cast.

@@shizackel actually it was " one romulan senator, one criminal and the self-respect of one Staaaarfleet officer." "At 0800 station time, the Romulan Empire formally declared war against the Dominion. They have already struck 15 bases along the cardassian border. so this is a huge victory for the good guys. This could be the turning point of the entire war. There is even a welcome to the fight party at 1700 in the wardroom. So... I lied. I cheated. I bribed men to cover the crimes of other men. And I am an accessory to murder but the most damning thing about it is I think I can live with it. And if I had to do it all over again... I would. Eric was right about one thing. A guilty conscience is a small price to pay for the safety of the entire quadrant. So I will learn to live with it because I can live with it... I can't live with it.
