Prosthetics are often expensive and time consuming to apply so they probably make sure the actors will be able to nail their lines and how to act before hand. Predatory species often have both eyes facing forward for excellent depth perception. @johnstamos4186
5 жыл бұрын
I hear what you're saying, but even the best generals make some assumptions. An example of this is Napoleon. He was famous for his out maneuvering the opposition forces in several battles in Italy. He would group up his forces into one large army and defeat in detail a smaller section of a larger army. He assumed however, that his smaller detachments that he left behind wouldn't get heavily engaged in battle, thusly exposing his overall plan. Overall it's a good assumption and it's exactly what Dukat does. It's perfectly reasonable to expect that the reinforcements will arrive. Even with the setbacks that occur when Deep Space 9 is sabotaged by Rom...they still succeed in destroying the minefield. No good general in that situation would expect an entire fleet to be destroyed by wormhole aliens. It's like an unavoidable act of God.

+@@johnstamos4186 There is one key difference: The auxiliaries under Napoleon's command came from many nations subservient to imperial France, whereas the auxiliaries under Dukat's command came from one overlord of Cardassia. Dukat broke Machiavelli's golden rule: Never invite foreigners more powerful than yourself into a land you hope to rule, for they will only grant you the power to serve their interests. Alas, it was never made clear how Dukat planned to overthrow the Founders (whether by hoarding Ketracel-white or by taking Founder hostages). Mind you, I don't question the soundness of Napoleonic strategy, only the inflexibility with which the declining Napoleon and the tail-chasing Dukat improvised when their battle plans went awry.

@@PredatorAlienate It's true...even the best plans go to hell once battle starts. However, it's how you prepare for a situation that makes or breaks a battle. However, if an earthquake had hit and it killed half the English army they would've lost. We both make some good points I feel... they're just relating to different things.

@peoplez129
4 жыл бұрын
Well the minefield was meant to stop a fleet of ships. The whole point of replication was so they didn't just detonate all the mines at once, and so if they tried, it wouldn't work. It also wouldn't be very effective if only the first wave got hit by the mines, since the minefield would be gone and more reinforcements would still be coming through. The minefield was meant to still be operational even if the Dominion fleet got destroyed by it, to discourage all further incursions. My guess is they'd replicate themselves in a pattern so as to be out of range of the exploding mine, but still in a field slightly offset from the original minefield. And before detonating, they could transfer their mine-making resources/energy to the new mine. The mines could also potentially use debris from exploded mines and ships to replicate more mines. After all, the mines were essentially based around replicators/transporters. And in the star trek universe, you could put any matter into a replicator. Technically, replicators didn't operate by just turning energy into matter, but could also use already existing matter to turn into something else.

Sisko mined the entrance to the Wormhole, its a singular point. When the mine detonated, the surrounding mines replicated another one in its place.

It can be done. A mine is simply a stationary defense that denies passage thru that area to all. The "mines" in STDS9 are proximity mines with anti-matter warheads. You just have to get close to them. In STNG they were bombs attached to the hulls of ships via short range transporter. Both have low passive emission signatures and so are not normally detected until too late. Other SyFy ideals have been automated energy weapon platforms that fire on anything coming in range as used in Babylon 5 and by the Cardassians in STDS9. Another is an automated missile launcher that fires short range missiles with powerful warheads at any target that comes within range. These are normally groups of such that are data linked to coordinate their attacks so as to not waste shots by having all fire at a small target.

I suspect the writers had more the idea in mind of limited range: shorter distances, ideal for office spaces and reading, since the Founders only intended Vorta in an administrative role. It would be the rough equivalent of an eagle seeing a squirrel a mile away, but a human could not. The human still has decent eyesight for his/her needs. As a result, why would the Founders who genetically re-tooled Vorta, feel the need to give them glasses?

@@Janoha17 Yeah I always assumed he meant they have bad long-distance vision but can see all right up close. @CalebS1330

I always thought it was odd that the Vorta would have week eyes, I would have thought that the founders would want their genetically engineered diplomats to be able to see the subtle nuances and facial expressions of those they speak to. At least for me, my head cannon has been that he was talking only about vision at a distance, I could imagine the founders intentionally removing their ability to see the stars and the sense of wonder and possibility that comes with it - the Vorta are essentially second in command of the Dominion, best to not give them anything to feel ambitious towards, not to mention making them dependent on the Jem'hadar for marksmanship who are in turn dependent on the Vorta for white. Everything in its proper place, perfectly ordered, no overlap, dependency creates stability.
@DeckKnight

They have good near vision to make out all those nuances, at the expense of not being able to see at long distance well. Weyoun can't see an explosion in the deep of space from a small mine. He can see every crevice in Dukat's forehead.

They were originally a tribal species that protected a Founder in trouble, and the Founders artificially evolved them in gratitude. Most of their original senses, except intelligence were kept the same, including poor eyesight and taste, but excellent hearing like any regular prey species would generally have.
@samuelrs5138
4 жыл бұрын
It actually makes total sense from a scientific perspective. In the human species bad eyesight and higher IQ, though not always mutually inclusive, are generally linked. Our hunting/gathering ancestors with many more predatory dangers who had bad eyesight would have generally needed to be smarter to survive. There's nothing inherent about bad eyesight that would make one intelligent but stupid people with bad eyesight would have been quickly weeded out of the gene pool when there was no technology or society to help them survive. With bad eyesight it would be much harder to hunt or gather and then there's all the dangers you would face from predators by not being able to see them as well as most others. It's the Darwinian evolutionary theory at work, intelligence among those with bad eyesight was a result of all those evolutionary pressures. Genetic engineering isn't some godlike power to insert anything you want - you need that code to already exist somewhere. So they would have taken the smartest among this species and many of them probably would have had bad eyesight. They bred the intelligence trait and were left with worse eyesight as a trade off. If you breed out the bad eyesight you're also throwing away a lot of genetic potential for intelligence.

I took this to be another subtle threat from Weyoun. It’s not that he couldn’t see the explosion, he didn’t care to see it. Mines being pinged one at a time at that rate, not even destroying them but slowly deactivating is not results, the only thing he wants is the field gone. That’s why he says “the Jem’Hadar have good eyes,” he’s letting Dukat know that if this plan doesn’t work it’s the Jem’Hadar that he’ll have to answer to.

I understands the plot points and the need to have "aliens" speaking English for the sake of the audience, and the fact that often times aliens well be speaking another language whilst on camera seemingly speaking English lol But what i don't understand is an aliens concept of time being universal to such a degree that human/earth timetables are used universally even with species who have never been encountered before and upon first contact and a few scenes have a grasp of time from a terran perspective. Explain this to me.

@@001SpecialAgent so logically your argument precludes the notion that every planet make the same revolutions around the sun as earth. Even though this is fictional... That's a stretch. You also hear aliens speaking of cultural differences throughout history making reference to Years Daytime cycles Minutes, seconds, months in relative comparison to the plot say, if on an alien world. Mathematically speaking finding a planet with a sentient form of life that could even breathe in our atmosphere let alone have a biology that makes them bipedal, the odds of any extra terrestrial culture having a grasp of time similar to ours falls in the trillions range. Think, needle in a haystack but the haystack is a galaxy.

@@babyamadeus78 We have a different outlook on how to watch and take in the show. I'm willing to accept that it is fiction, and that the fictional aliens need to reflect human behavior in some way so that a story can be told that I can care about because, you know, we're human. They can make a show with expensive CGI and they can come up with some alien garble and let humans interact with it, maybe, but there's no way that the stories in Star Trek could be told that way, and I wouldn't trade the TNG and DS9 Star Trek for your more scientifically accurate aliens.
