I remember looking at the Rekkr online and quickly dismissing it in favor of the Chinese class D amps when I read 4 watts. 89db is more than enough though. For someone that already has a Modi+ sitting around unused (me) I could add a Rekkr, Sys, and perhaps Micca MB42X for around $270 and have a cool separates desktop setup for the pc. But then, there's something like the Monoprice mm-5 powered speakers for $279 I've been eyeballing that'll accomplish the same thing. It'd be cool to see a desktop system face-off with the pros and cons of mini separates vs all in one powered monitors for people like me with no experience with either. I suppose for less than $600 I could do the comparison for myself but it seems like it'd make for a good video.

Running a stereo amp as bridged mono makes the amp see half the impedance. So a speaker that dips down to 6 ohms will be a 3 ohm load for bridged stereo amp…not a great idea unless the speaker is high impedance.
@NemoPropaganda
Жыл бұрын
I think ohms are generally spoken about in too broad of terms. Without discussing frequency its like wattage without sensitivity. It needs the other half of the conversation to make sense. Audioholics recently made the mistake of referring to the Supermon Mini as harder to drive, I'm paraphrasing and don't remember the eact wording but his engineer friend quickly pointed out the impedance drop was very high up in the frequency range so it wasn't really an issue. If a speaker is mostly 4ohms and drops down to say 2.8 ohms at 500hz it might be easier to drive than a speaker thats mostly 8ohms but drops down to 2.8ohms at 40hz.
@seanb3303
Жыл бұрын
@@NemoPropaganda typically the impedance drops are in the bass but not always. A speaker that is rated at 8 ohms will typically drop to 6 ohms at some bass frequencies….which means 3 ohms for a bridged mono amp…which it’s not rated for. Will you notice? If the amp sees a 2 ohm impedance from a 4 ohm speaker there is a good chance you will go into protection mode…is taxing the power supply current worth the tradeoff of a few more watts? Maybe…is buying a second stereo amp to create a trade off situation worth it? Probably not in most situations…like you said get the Gallahorn instead. I have rekkr and Gallahorn and love them both but would never bridge them unless maybe i was running a super high impedance LS3/5A monitor

Thanks! Been hoping for a quality reviewer to tackle the Rekkr. I was excited about a Schiit Class-A amp, but no volume knob means you can't have a Modi/Rekkr desktop stack like the headphone kids have a Modi/Magni stack. It's not really small OR cheap once you stack 3 boxes (4 for tone controls) along with all the cable connections. BTW, RSL just released a desktop amp that looks very intriguing. Class D but American company and lots of features.

Interesting. Rekkr can go plenty loud you say but can it also give you that oomph like other (class D) amplifiers that have 25 or more times of watts? How does a Rekkr (or Gjallahorn) compare to a Fosi Audio ZA3 or V3 Mono? Im leaning towards the ZA3 (in dual mono mode) in combination with a Wiim Ultra (pre amp/streamer). Currently running a NAD C700 with Dali Ikon 1 mk2 speakers and a Jamo s808 sub. I like the soundquality of my current setup (really not bad) but im looking for a more budget hifi setup that can achieve same soundquality or better (for less money). What would you advise?

very low volume maybe, not really an ideal pairing, Q150 is harder to drive and has strong bass, strong bass soaks up wattage quickly. I'd suggest a single Gjallahorn instead at minimum. Lastly while I've not heard it if you can fit something larger look into the Cambrdige AXA35.

Hi Nemo, just to clear things up : when you mention compression and distortion problems, that appear when pairing the Rekkr with speakers which are hard to drive... this only ever becomes a problem when trying to listen *at high volume*, right ? Because I imagine it's not an issue at low and medium volume, since the Rekkr won't be pushed hard.

@NemoPropaganda Nice review. I have 2 desktops gears and I enjoy them a lot. The first time I seen this small Schiit series product (Loki, Sys, Modi, Magni, Mani,...) I got in love with the size and look and I dreamed with get a small staclk of them to drive my desktop system. I already have a Sys and a Loki ones and I am looking for a Magni But one piece was missed in the series and it was an speaker amplifier, and now they have this Rekkr. I really spected Schiit made some class D amplifier. I have an SMSL SA300 in one of my desktops and it sounds great, and also if I use with big speakers, threfore something like this is what I expected... but Rekkr is only 2 W, and as you and other reviewers mention, it sounds great, and perhaps it does it. My desktop system consisted in a pair od satelitte speakers (Vieta Neo10 that are 92 dB sensibility) connected to a passive bass module Tannoy CPA5 SB (90 dB sensitivity) This is what I am driving by the SMSL SA300 I already mentioned. Do you think it works with that setup? My other desktop is similar, 2 Kef HTS2001 speakers, connected to a passive bass module Bose Acoustimass 5 Series III and drived by an AVR Vieta VR610 (100 W per channel in class AB) and it sounds glorious.

I bought the Rekkr off them, as well as the SYS pre-amp. I checked their description box, carefully, and they didn't specify any specific impedence speakers, or mention you shouldn't drive it at max output. Mine lasted a month. If you check their sales page, it just gives you encouragement. Customer service was so-so, when I tried to get a refund. I had to keep repeating myself, and it was like they expected me to prove it was defective. Then, they told me that it was my fault for choosing a poor design for my system. I'm out the cost of the useless pre-amp and the cables and needing special banana plugs, and back to using my Yamaha receiver. I don't think it has a protect mode, so it just dies, if you don't use it properly. And it is pretty sensitive equipment. It should come with instructions. I've also bought their cheapest DAC, the Modi. That seems to work well and improve the sound coming from streaming music services. I don't think they are transparent or sincere and I don't know where anyone gets any scientific measurements that they can show that the product is superior to the normal merchandisers. I wouldn't recommend them. I would recommend Crutchfield, instead. Their customer service is top notch and they don't seem to just cooperate with you if there is something wrong with something you bought from them, but to go out of their way to help.

I usually delete these types of comments as they are often times one sided and not very helpful to anyone but you have expressed yourself clearly and seem to take some of the responsiblity so I will leave it here. The SYS and REkkr are extremely niche products and certainly not for everyone. Personally I feel that's clear by the specs alone but I understand this hobby can be difficult to navigate at times. It is a bummer that the gear failed on you and if they did not take care of you that's pretty messed up. Considering the low price of the SYS I would expect them to replace it regardless of fault. $49 is a low price to pay to keep a customer happy.
