What I would suggest is to triangulate the seat frame to the back bone. If you figure where your butt is going to be, find the mid point of that and run from your seat hoop to the backbone of the frame, about 1/2 way between the tank mount and swing arm pivot. To be all fancy like I would do an inverse curve (of the backbone) to the frame. I would use a 22mm (7/8") hollow tube. Seamed is fine. it will allow you to see the work done on the suspension and stop the seat hoop from drooping over time.

Those bracket welds look soooooo perfect. Vince is a real artisan with the hot stick. The CX500 was the favorite bike for the Bike Messenger riders in London back in the day. Dead reliable. Shaft drive. HONDA. Starts EVERY time. Just enough power to dodge the Austin London Taxis. Excellent gas milage. Comfortable. Torquey (not Torquay). Small enough to zip through the rush hour traffic. All around great bike. Now people are rediscovering the reasons why this was one of Honda's most popular sleepers. They also made it in the 650 size.

I'd have some concerns about the strength of that swingarm/shaft drive arrangement. It's not designed to be subjected to that much leverage, so it could do with some reinforcement to triangulate the rear axle, shock mount and pivot or I have a feeling it's going to bend

While its a fair concern this type of conversion has been done 1000s of times on cx500s now. I have seen zero instances of them bending even though people continually bring it up. Some of us have braced them but for the bikes intended use it is pretty much overkill.

Rich, might an idea to remove the spring and build the frame around the rear wheel in the fully compressed position. If you are cornering and hit a pothole, and the frame contacts the tyre it's the same as hitting the brakes, at that point your hide is making love to the bitumen and your not having a good day.
@danmurphy5885

Make sure your tire doesn’t contact your seat bar when the suspension is compressed. The only other thing I’d be concerned about is the solid bar bending when you hit a bump and your seat beginning to sag.

Looking great so far, i personally wouldn't start pressing into the side of the tank, the bottom seam welds are weak at that age and will probably end up splitting adding more welding to the job 💁🏻 would be cool to pinstripe the tank for the body lines and fit some rear set footpegs to bring your knees down and add to that cafe riding position 👍 also with the battery, are you going to fit a gel battery under the seat cone?

Get a tank off a later bmw or similar that has the knee dimples already but has a taller bump in the crotch area and meld the two. Where to put the battery? That round area at the back looks good. Put an inch deep box under the seat and it will strengthen the seat and give some storage and place to put wiring battery etc.

Howdy boys back in the day I used to work on these old girls and for the most part they only had two issues not enough regular servicing and the water pump seals. So my two cents on the build. When setting up a shock from scratch go to the bike wreckers and fine a bike with comparable swing arm length then measure from pivot point to rear axle with the bike on a stand (very important) then measure from rear axle to top of shock then top of shock to swing arm pivit that gives you your top mount length from front to back then look at weather it has a link system if it does buy the shock with links and adapt exactly to your bike. Bike manufacturers spends millions figuring out this stuff just copy it it's there for many reasons and it's safe. A progressive rate spring will struggle without mechanical advantage and will most likely "pig root". Hope this helps👍🏻

I would definitely add a smaller hoop around the shock that can unbolt that has some bars to support the back of the seat, I can imagine a 180 pound guy bouncing down the road will bend the seat support into the rear wheel, I know most of the weight will be forward on the seat but I bet a hard pot hole and a 6’4” Rich would probably bend the seat no problem then you’re doing burn outs with the seat

Vince/Rich: I know by time video out probably too late and probably never read this .... but if you want the front end lower and maybe consider upgrading your forks at the same time, with a simple bearings swap you should be able to insert GSXR cartridge forks in the bike. You get better tunable suspension (can reshim etc), double front discs (better brakes) and the GSXR forks are shorter so can get a nicer stance if you want that (GSXR 1100 one are longer if you want higher nose, from memory). To keep the retro feel use the last of the 'right side up' GSXR forks (2004 ish ?) which also means they are somewhat cheaper as most look for the upside down forks. I installed a set on my 1983 CBX550, probably have the bearing details somewhere in my bookmarks. It does give you a 17"x3.5" front wheel which might look funny though with the thin back wheel?

Lowering the front that much is going to be dicey to say the least, the only real way to lower forks is by cutting the spacer down and that doesn't change the spring rate at all so the chances of the fork bottoms smacking the bottom yoke over bumps will be pretty high. I'd recommend seeing if any companies sell progressive fork spring for it and play around with the air gap until you're sure that's not going to happen. I had to get Hyperpro ones for my XJ900s because I lowered the the forks through the top yoke by 2 inches, they were £120 shipped but not only did they fix that issue they improved the bikes handling hugely.

One slick trick for monoshock cafe racers if you want to hide the oil tank is to turn the bump on the seat pan in to an oil tank. Benji's Cafe Racers used to do that. Yah ...something like MotoMotion said ...the "triangular" gusset for the seat support tube should be much longer .. on both vertical and horizontal planes...and a holes cut into the gusset to allow access both sides to the top mono shock bolt, and a series of smaller hole trailing off rearwards from that larger hole..., plus or minus 200 lbs of weigh cantilevered as it is beyond the rearmost point of that short gusset seems risky.

I’d be worried that that by the time you put a 200 pounder in the seat and then hit a pothole or something, that the seat frame is going to get into the rear tire? And if the rear shock is stiff enough for that not to happen it might make for an uncomfortable ride.

The motion ratio on the rear suspension is really bad. Assuming a 250lb load on the tire and what looks like about a 6 to one ratio you have 1500lbs on the spring. Making things worse the spring will have very little travel. With that motion ratio 6in at the tire is one at the spring. That means you need a 1500lb/in spring. Crazy heavy. That’s why you see a lot of bikes with arrangements like this using bell cranks in their suspension.
