Thanks UT. For those with M796, the 5 mm hex drain plug torque should be about 15 ft-lb (20 nm), not the 42 nm stated in the Ducati service manual. The oil volume needed is also not the 3.7 liters per manual with filter replaced. Fill just to the high mark on the sight glass with the bike up right, start the bike up and let it idle for 3 min, turn the bike off, wait 10 min, then check level. Repeat the steps until the oil level is between the high and low marks with the bike upright.

That's a good point, and the filter is straight up and down, it's very easy to fill. If the filter is full, oil will get to the heads quicker. I have an '79 ducati darmah, and the filter is upside down under the right side carb, in my case I can't fill the filter. Cheers, Rob

I really suggest keeping the drain plug off while removing the filter. Removing the filter changes the pressure in that area of the motor and can cause some oil to run out into the crankcase. You may have a small amount of oil rush down to your plug when you remove the filter but you already have the plug tightened, making the oil change less effective.

Great video.. FYI, on the S4 2002 the filter crush washer is 20mm, also LO for an 05 R6 is 14mm. For the oil screen washer, I have yet to measure it or find it. The screen washer I got from Advanced auto parts, Labeled M14 and M20 and it was about 3 buck for 3, they are copper to which I believe seals better. If you know size of the oil screen, post it but have not matched one yet at an autoparts.

The service manual says 3.1 Qt. I used a little less than 3 Qt. So I think buying 3 Qt should suffice. Make sure you use motorcycle-specific oil. Automobile oil has friction modifier that doesn't work well with wet-clutch on the 696. I use full synthetic 10W-50 but 10W-40 or 15W-40 or 15W-50 will all work just fine.

Second 'filter' is a screen to keep metal particles from entering the oil pump. It just needs to be cleaned once in a while. But it's so easy to do that I would just do it every oil change anyway.

Great video, very helpful! Did you notice your old filter was taller than the new (replacement) filter? Also, the manual should say 3.1 litres not 3.1 quarts. Small difference. Never get the full 3.1 litres in there anyway...2.5 to 2.8 litres is about all it will take (due to residual oil?).

@Deadpoetic6 Actually one more person commented: "FYI everyone, on the 2010 they changed the drain plug. Its a 12 mm bolt with a 5mm Allen head. Even easier to strip! Could not find a torque value. Even my dealer had no clue. Tight is good I guess." So look for that. :)

@88wingnut Mmm... IIRC filters were identical. There's only one filter model Ducati use I believe. And I wouldn't worry abt the oil amount unless the difference is > 0.5 L. Just make sure it's at about the right level when you check the oil window.

@Deadpoetic6 Sorry I'm not sure what the new 2011 model looks like. But there should be some sort of plug at the lowest point of the engine case. May not take a 10mm allen key, but may take something else. Good luck.

The service symbol needs to be cleared by your dealer. I don't know of any other way. Hex keys were 10 and 14mm. It's also mentioned in the video. :) All Ducatis use the same oil filter. The wrench can be purchased online, just Google for 'Ducati Filter Wrench'. Alternatively eBay got them for sale, too.

@rejneesh It is the first oil change as per schedule (600 miles / 1000km). This is a must do maint item, mainly to clean out the majority of the break-in debris (metal shavings) from the oil.

other things - correct torque is absolutely necessary - anything to do with bearings for example as you are actually setting the bearing preload - eg, swingarms (esp SSS) head set steering bearings, and absolutely anything to do with the engine proper of course - timing gear assembly, head stretch bolts etc... but oil plugs, even spark plugs etc... just need to be nipped up and absolutely not cross-threaded or have the threads stripped.... if you can achieve that... job done!

@mike148r You'll probably have to redo that oil change. :( Make sure: 1) you are using the right filter, probably so, since Ducati really have only one filter, I think 2) Clean the filter mount on the engine with rag so that no dirt can get between your filter seal and the mount surface. 3) Did you oil the O ring on the filter before you twist it on? Dry seal could cause some leak. That's all I can think of. Good luck.

Crush aluminum washer deformed slightly when torqued down to provide good seal. It's probably can be reuse once or twice, but since they costs $1 a piece, there's no good reason to risk leaking to save 2 bucks.

Good video. Nice viewing angles. You weren't using your torque wrench as a breaker bar where you? That is a quick way to pull it out of calibration. Was that 10w30? The Monster should us 15w50 if you can. Here is a link to a free shop manual from Ducati www.ducatiusa.com/services/maintenance/index.do . 10w30 is okay if you have fairly mild summers and great for winter. The upper number can be thought of as your hot temp protection. This isn't to say you ever want to go with a number bigger than the manufacturer recommends, but the number basically decreases with heat cycles and time. So, it is better to start off with the recommended number if you can. Anyhow, great video overall. Thanks for sharing!

not really. it's a drain plug... but be aware that it is an aluminium thread u are screwing into.... so follow spark plug package instructions... screw it in to it's finger tight, then no more than 1/8th-1/4 of a turn to tighten.... just don't over tighten... it will be fine. use a new crush washer, as it will lock the thread from unscrewing and will make a good seal. the original one if torqued to spec, esp 40nm+ will be crushed... get a newie... and u can reuse that one a few times.. good luck
