I figured you were an engineer after RTV. By Hall Effect I was certain. I owned a couple Duc STs. Put about 35k miles on each. They were great. What did break was always comp'd by Duc. Even had chrome flake off the rockers a year and many thousands of miles out of warranty and they even covered that. My last one was in a shop that caught fire. If it wasn't, I might still have it. Personally, my neck can't handle that upward cock I need to ride the Panni's, but they are beautiful. I bought a Thruxton 1200 that has essentially the same riding position as my old STs. Even steers like it. Twin is similar too, if less clutch racket. The Brits have won me over, but I still root for Ducs on race day!
@FancyAnimal
7 жыл бұрын
saddlebag ya I own an engineering biz. Should I tell people I also own a Honda, or will that ruin it for the haters? Not many people know about the ST. You should try a new Supersport just for kicks. What do you mean it caught fire? Thruxton had some charm...see my Hawaii review. I have the opposite problem...my back hurts riding upright. It's nice to have a bike for every chapter of our lives. What a country!
@saddle8bag

I've owned or rented about every major brand besides Harley. Several Hondas too. Even a Goldwing. I like various things about all of them. The Supersport is tempting, but two is my limit. I also have a Versys 1000 for touring around with the Mrs. Been using it to tool around the local fire roads with the Adventure crew too. My bike didn't catch fire, but the shop did. They had to claim everything in it on their insurance...including mine. You rode the old Thruxton. New one is a completely different animal as are all the new Triumph "Modern Classics."

@FancyAnimal

Sorry to hear that. Sounds like you have a lemon and should pursue the lemon law. I'm passed 40,000km and never had dash , QS, or coolant issues. Where is the leak coming from? The bike is not made to leak and can be very dangerous. If you don't pursue the lemon law, find another dealer ASAP!

I owned a 999 back when they first came out. I wanted to love her, I really did. I saw more problems with her than my prior 30 bikes put together. It was like being married to a porn star who is also prone to committing domestic violence. Like every domestic violence victim, I thought it was me. That I needed to change. That things would get better. I finally realized that things wouldn’t get better right about the time the top end blew up. Ducati bought it back because it was such a piece of shit. I blew the dust off my R1, which had been sitting for almost 6 months. Fired right up as if I just rode it the day before. I’ll never be mesmerized by Ducati again.

Jesus, never buy a Buell then! I had an XB12-R from new and it started to corrode after 50 dry miles. It had 2 recalls for items in it's first 6 months and the overall build quality was pretty shoddy. In comparison, my 1991 Ducati 900ss had very few problems in the 10 years I had it. I had 1 'major' problem over that time when the voltage regulator/rectifier overheated and caught fire. (It was Japanese, a Nippondenso unit) I replaced it with an aftermarket item that was higher rated and never had anymore problems from it. I did 32,000 miles and had it serviced for valve clearances only. Everything else I did myself. Oil filters were incredibly cheap as they are the same item as fitted to a Citroen 2CV! The only thing I would have changed would be the electrical cabling dealing with the starter motor. Too weedy. Beefier cables would have got rid of the problem I had with the bike's poor starting. I had no more problems with it than I had with my previous 3 Japanese bikes.

Enjoyable and informative video! I've been smitten with the Supersport S since I saw the first picture. Much like yourself bikes tend to be my primary mode of everyday travel so I've been trying to learn as much as possible about what it's like to live with a Ducati. Thank goodness you actually put miles on your Panigale and I stumbled on your video. The only repair I found unsettling was the forks. I,m 65 ive seen Ducati come and go twice. The only person I ever saw with 2 Ducatis , bought the second one to keep the first one running. This is same for Alfa, Fiat even the cars with the horses. All complicated expensive and way over rated. Has anyone ever seen a Ferrari with a 100,000 miles on it. I ride a 2008 Yamaha FZ1 it has 74,000 miles on it. It has never been back to the dealer. Still keeps me smiling .Last year with 70,000 it ran 10.90 quarter mile. Original clutch.may change it this year. But I can work on it. I will say ride what you love thats all that matters
@TurtleGP

The new Ducatis are so much more reliable these days, they aren't the same little company they were when they gained the reputation for being high maintenance and finicky. They are now even better than the standard they were at when Harley owned them. Now with the king of the auto industry in charge, their facilities and manufacturing standards are better than most Japanese. Since the VW Audi Group bought Ducati, the quality and dealership backing has greatly improved. They just haven't kicked their harley reputation yet because not many can afford them so not many are out there to be seen by non enthusiasts that arent savy enough to understand the new engineering and manufacturing standards they are made with.
@TurtleGP

It's like comparing a 50 year old italian supercar to a new Lamborghini. The reliability is night and day. The new Lamborghinis for the last ten years have been basically a bullet proof Audi R8. It's become a reliable, easy to drive, and safe, daily driving commuter. Gone are the days of exoctics that spend more time at the shop than driving on the road. No more being stranded constantly if you aren't a mechanic. They are just as practical as any Japanese sports car, usualy share the same electronics too. Only thing that changes is higher end materials and the styling. A new ducati is like buying a yamaha superbike and upgrading the suspension, brakes, and adding some lightweight wheels and carbon fiber pieces. This is why an R1M with all thise parts costs 23 grand and the new italian superbikes are made in greater numbers and sold for competitive pices. A new Aprilia RSV4 base model is only 16 grand and has similar service intervals as its Japanese counterparts.

So what i understand from your review (which was really informing) Ducati makes cool looking bikes which have crappy build quality, full of ongoing problems and cost an arm and a leg to fix & maintain... Thanks but no thanks. I'll stick with my bmw which i ride like i stole it. After 15k, i'm yet to face a problem. At least that's my 2 cents worth of opinion. Considering those mirrors, you can keep the change :p

Thanks for the review. I really appreciate it. I'm currently at the only point in my life I'll ever be at, with enough disposable income to go out and just buy a new bike. I expect kids will be demanded soon, and by the time that's over, I'll be surprised if there's much fun available at all that still powered by fossil fuels. I've got an old '56 Velocette, '79 Guzzi Lemans, an '88 650 HawkGT(BROS) and a '98 zx7r, and I love em all to bits for different reasons, (and I can convert them all to run on alcohol if I have to), but always wanted that Ducati. It would have been a 916, but, my Mrs is German, and from a family obsessed with things being perfect, in order, reliable, of quality, and her dads told her all about older Ducati reliability and practicality. The other odd thing is that she's consistently encouraging the purchase, and she basically hates motorbikes. Dirty, smelly, dangerous, noisy, impracticle. This might be because I do a lot of miles, and I have to fix my bikes quite a lot as a result, (and that time could be spent fixing the house). The newest is 19 years old, and has a LOT on the clocks. In the past few months, I've had the original rad problems (fixed by replacing with one shipped from glorious un-salty California - £100 delivered to my door - gracias) Rearsets gear lever break (corroded through where joins the linkage), replaced front master cylinder, brake discs/pads, did my clearances, oil etc. I've got a spare set of forks ready to strip and replace the stanchions on, as I'll need that in a few K. It happens in gluts, and then I need to spend a chunk of cash to keep it roadworthy, and she thinks that would be better spent on a 'problem free' new bike. She's also overheard all my youtubing while I learned about all these new electronics, cornering ABS, cornering traction control (both of which, I would rather like, as my commute in the UK is both long at 130 mile round trip, and there's often a sort of 'lucky-dip' type of surface around blind bends, maybe a giant puddle, maybe gravel after the puddle has gone, mud from farm traffic, diesel spills, etc...) and wants it to have all the latest and greatest 'rider saftey aids' cos she doesn't want me to die, which is nice, but it means I can't slip a 916, or a 1098/848 in under the radar, and I think even the 959 panigale lacks a lot of it (I'd have liked the 1098/1198, last of the line really, belts, steel trellis, fits my body too), and leaves me with the latest crop of superbikes. I'm partial to a Kawasaki, so thinking of a zx10r, plush suspension, good brakes, all the electronics, but no downchange on the quickshifter, unless you buy an RR (so I probably would cos its only another 2 grand), but, kinda, standard Jap styling - nothing to write home about. Not reeeeally into the S1000RR - it just doesn't make me need it, even though the heated grips would be lush in winter. I'm sure it's great, but somehow feels too utilitarian, and I don't need to win races on tracks. I'll be trying a fireblade SP2, just for shits and giggles, but I don't want it. I just fancy a go on the bike that McGuinness and Martin couldn't stay on, and getting a test ride is easy here. Rather buy an RC45! Or even an RC51. or both. Yamaha - I'm sure its great, but I'm not into it , it doesn't fit me, I'm tall - rather have a TZR250, (which I'd have a reason to be too big for), a Supermono, or an OWO2 for the money. Suzuki? no interest somehow. KTM - nope. But anyway, yeah, a good objective review - It'd be nice if I could find reviews of the BMW, the Kwak and the Duke all having done 3 British winters, but I think your review is about as close as I'm gonna get with that. Is the headlight any good? Great music.

Is it weird that I worry that, if I buy a 1299, in 20 years time, I might not be able to find petrol for it, and then due to all the electronics, it just won't run and I won't be able to ride it?

If you buy the Panigale S model, it comes equipped with LED headlights which are considerably brighter than conventional lighting. 1299S Panigale, 1290 SuperDuke, SuperDuke GT, Yamaha MT10, and Indian Scout are bikes I would check out.

This is a valid point, but you think we have A/C here? ;) Germans call this 'Worrying about unlaid eggs'. I worry more about smashing into a deer, in the dark fog and murk of winter, but not until it nearly happens. Seriously though - they have the whole countryside to stand around in.

No one wins a religious argument and many of the comments here are just that. Inline 4s are not boring if you exist in a vacuum. Aside from an RC30 or RC51, I can't recall too many Honda engines that exhibited a lot of character....and character is the essence of a MOTOR-bike.

Take 280 from SF to Pacifica exit -Take hwy 1 from Pacifica to half moon bay turn right on Hwy 92 to Sky line go right on sky line stop at Alice's Restaurant ( Big bikes of all kinds hang out. Then you can drop back down Hyw 84 (awesome road for your bike, these all are!) then at the end of 84 you can go right back to SF on 1 down the coast or go left down the coast to Santa Cruz. Then back to SF down 1 from Santa Cruz. Check out the Board walk in Santa Cruz ! Try to do it when it's not fogged in. A ALL day run and very beautiful. You can't go wrong.✨😆🤘✨🇺🇸if you go to Santa Cruz it will be a ALL day gig but if you go back to SF from the bottom of 84 bout half a day. Also stop at Apple Jacks bar on 84 home of old school jokers and smokers like Niel Young. And the Greatful dead.

For some people 15000 is a normal year of riding (and all those issues though not major would be quite annoying if you had them all in one year). Had it not been under warranty, it would have cost you $$$$$$$ After having owned bikes of most major brands, there's 2 brands I've learned to stay away from: Ducati and KTM. They are sexy, fun, sound great, but you will visit your dealer more often than you'd like and it will cost you more than you expect (even when expecting higher costs).

Not impractical? Some folks don't live in San Diego, deal with -30°F in the winter, ice and snow, have to haul groceries and other stuff, may work in a place where helmet hair smashed clothing, and motorcycle gear isn't acceptable. In such cases, motorcycles are "additional" to the practical piece (a climate controlled car). Hence not paying the price of an additional car without any of the practicality of a car.

Holy shit!!! This is worse than any high maintenance bitch. I have always wanted a Duke and when the 1199 came out I was creaming . I ride an 06 cbr1000rr bought it as a leftover in 07 for $9600 OTD. I have put 61k miles on it and the only shop work that has been done is a valve adjust at 20k and had RaceTec redo the suspension at 50k. It's a daily rider and the clutch is about to go. I gotta say I love your bike but I would be straight pissed with all those problems within 20K.
