My wife & I had the pleasure of taking figure skating & ice dancing lessons from both Paul & Isabelle in Florida in the late 1990's. (I wasn't very good at it, but let me tell you, it made me a much stronger skater for hockey!) They work very hard indeed. Paul would sometimes be at the rink until 11:00pm when I was leaving after my hockey game, and we would talk about all sorts of things, he is a very nice, down-to-earth gentleman. I wish I knew where he was now, would love to catch up on things.

I loved them so much back in the day. It was always so frustrating that they were never appreciated during their time by judges. I don't think this one was my favourite but I SO appreciated his role. That didn't really progress in ice dancing with them - some of the innovation did - but just that he at times is the one to focus on - not just the 'lead' in showing off the female. I like the equality between them.

And what about medals awarded to medal judges only from the USSR? Or maybe, in addition to the Eastern bloc, there were judges from France, Britain, Germany, the USA and Canada? Maybe you did not notice that the highest ratings for the technical part were put by France and Hungary, and the lower 5.3 Canada and 5.5 US? What kind of bias and influence of Russian judges do you speak?

I don't argue that Paul was stronger than Isabelle. It's the wording of the post I was previously replying to that I find upsetting. No skater we can watch at worlds is "fabulously bad". And well - I saw Isabelle stumbling once in their Olympic program in '92, which she skated with a flu and an injury. All their other performances she skated cleanly. It's quite a normal thing that one partner of a coule is stronger than the other.
@mysticalmargaret6105

I think Ice Dancing has slowly gone backwards since the early '90s. Much of today's Ice Dance programs are boring imo. 5.3 by the Canadian judge reads like sour grapes. They treated the Duchesnays like crap when they competed for Canada, so they went to France. The bitter Canadian judge just tried to take a swipe at them.
@MsRumex

the Dancing has gone backwards in early '90s then come back on track in the late '90s- early '2000s and gone backwards again later on (imho) p.s. and I totally agree about canadian judge (but than canadian judges (and most likely their federation) was very adamant about ice dancing to be actual dancing (as they always did judge very rigorously more interpretive programs done by some russian or french teams

Isabelle just wasn't strong technically; Paul was. The choreography shows it. In all of their routines Paul did the technical dancing and the tricks. Isabelle was mostly along for the ride. You'll often see her stumble in major competitions and you never see her in an extended position unless Paul is physically putting her leg into one. It's okay for fans to comment on videos; it's why they're here. Folks say the same thing about Margaglio as paired with Fusar-Poli; she's much better than him.
