Ducks are perfect for meat and dawn, chickens - for eggs (easier to care during the winter, eat less).

I have both chickens and ducks. If I had to pick one over the other, I would pick ducks. Ducks will lay eggs a couple years longer than chickens. I also like the fact that they reach their full size much quicker than chickens. I would definitely raise a meat duck over a meat chicken any day. The main reason I have both is that my ducks will not lay eggs during the winter months while my chickens lay year round. I agree that the ducks seem to have more personality than the chickens and are more fun to watch.

I love chickens, have since my childhood. I've raised my own chickens for 15 years and had many breeds. But now I find out that I have a sensitivity to chicken eggs that is compromising my health, but not a sensitivity to duck eggs, or so the blood tests say. I can't seem to find duck eggs anywhere to buy for consumption to see if I'd like eating them.... but I'm thinking I'd like to own ducks to at least use their eggs for baking. Very hard to bake anything without eggs. Now I just need to think about what breed would work best for me and if I can manage them on my property. Thanks for putting out this information, very helpful to someone like me contemplating the ''duck thing''.

We have a bunch of duck egg customers for the same reason, they are allergic the chicken eggs. We also sell to people who give there dogs an all Natrual diet and their dogs are allergic to chicken eggs. We just got another breed of chickens to help us keep up with our duck egg orders. You should definitely ducks they are very enjoyable to have on your farm. Thanks for following along and supporting our small farm!!

I am not sure when you made this one, but I could never tell with you which you prefer the most. You seem to thrive with your Pigs, your Turkeys, Chickens and ducks. I love the donkeys and I thought I saw horses in a background scene once! Do you have sheep or cattle? This may be corny but you seem to be in Hog Heaven with all your pets including the cat (have a dog too?) I love watching your farm; loved the one about the bus and the bowling pins (I never thought that was a viable thing - redecorating bowling pins) congratulations. You did mention you and your brother made a delivery when your Dad passed - my condolences to you all. Whatever you like to film, however you like to film it, and whenever you like to do it, I am happy. I would not suggest any changes. Why change greatness!

both are great survivalists even with less care but ducks are a lot better in combating diseases like parasites where chickens get easily. I've observed it with our neighbor's ababandoned chickens and ducks where the chickens got skinny because of worms and also got fowl pox but the ducks that were left on a pond were in good shape just by eating what was in the pond like snails and vegetation like water spinach

That is awesome we love our ducks the good thing about ducks is they don’t really slow down like the chickens do in the winter. I have read they can lay 7-9 years depending on the breed. I think you would have more than enough with 4 ducks Thanks for following along!!

We have had good luck with both. I have heard ducks are heartier and healthier than chickens but we have never had either get sick. I think a lot of our success is because we are able to move them to fresh areas and keep them off their manure. Even if you can’t rotate them around your farm as long as you are diligent and keep their coops clean it should help

Tough question depends on what you are looking for. They each can serve a great purpose on your farm. Chickens can prep gardens but will scratch and mess up your garden when planted, eat ticks, lay eggs. Ducks can eats bugs and slugs in the garden without doing much damage to your plants, lay eggs. They are both great! I would suggest keeping either of them moving around your property if you are able so you keep the manure spread and they always have fresh grass. I thought the ducks were easier in the brooding stage than chickens but now that they are older the only thing I don’t like about the ducks is I get a lot of dirty eggs but the chickens eggs are normally clean. But a fried duck egg is delicious they are also great to bake with. Sorry probably didn’t really answer your question just wanted to give you some ideas about both to help you make a decision
