Dudley Savage "As Prescribed" Back By Popular Demand. I uploaded a few weeks ago now what was thought at the time of September of 1968 to be the very last "As Prescribed" Radio programme hosted by Dudley Savage, which was broadcast from the ABC / Royal Plymouth. I feel you could really tell in Dudley Savage's voice how sad that must have been after 20 years of this very popular Sunday morning hospital and get well request radio show with organ music played on the ABC Plymouth Compton organ. But after so many people complained at this time to the BBC for taking this very popular request show off the radio and a 43,000 singed petition that was handed to the BBC with even the then Arch Bishop of Canterbury getting involved, the BBC relented. Here we have the first "As Prescribed" show back, which went out on 22/12/1968. Dudley Savage does indeed sound so very happy to be back doing this show he so loved.
I have to say there are quite a few Christmas Carols on this recording as this went out so near Christmas day! Well, it is October when I'm uploading this, and it's great to hear these carols played on the Compton organ. And there again, this recording comes from a mono reel to reel tape recording, which was taken straight off the radio in 1968, so once against the sound is far from perfect. But a real bit of history in the fact that it was people power that got this programme back on the air again and it continued on for a number of years into the 1970s coming once a month from the ABC Compton organ, and the other weeks being a record request show that was studio-recorded. I think Dudley Savage had such an excellent way of reading the requests and relating to the people and always sounded so upbeat about it all, and it was done with great care and compassion, a far cry from what is on the likes of BBC Radio 2 these days. For me growing up in the 1960s, this was a very happy free time and thinking back, we had so little then, but life was very happy.
