Between 1967 and 1968, ten six-axle articulated Düwag GT6 trams, also known as GTW-D6, were delivered to Würzburg. In 1975, eight eight-axle trams were added to the fleet, while the older trams were extended by adding a midsection. Together with 11 similar second-hand trams from Hagen, the GTW-D8 series became the largest part of the tram fleet. At the late 1990s, modern low-floor trams were available, so most of the old Düwag trams were taken out of service. Since then, the remaining six GTW-D8 were used mainly for rush-hour services.
Though since November 2023, the old-fashioned trams are back in regular all-day service, since the more modern trams had to be put out of operation because of major technical defects. For the next few months, they operate from monday to saturday on line 4, connecting the Sanderau district to the city center and the main station. This is most likely the last major service extension for the Düwags, since new trams will be delivered soon.
