It actually makes sense that Jill would be the one to speak out. Jill isn't the oldest daughter, but like Jana she was parentified and given the bulk of baby rearing responsibilities. There was a presumed social contract: you obey God, you obey your father, and you will be blessed. Jill did all of that, she did everything right and she was STILL abused and thrown under the bus. Not only was she S.A.'ed, but the headship she was bound to obey betrayed her and essentially sacrificed her to protect the predator who hurt her. We're only just now hearing that Josh was in the room during the interview. Imagine what other horrors Jill has suffered that we don't know about? Point being, why would you want to keep honoring a social contract when the people who you trusted to protect you broke it first?
@lc5666

Agreed! It seems like the ones who break free the most in situations like this with strict religion are either people who never believed it in their lives or people who believed and lived it 100% who got burned and subsequently realized it wasn't what they thought it was. I'm so proud of Jill, it's hard to be the first one to talk sense when everyone else is saying how great the emperor's clothes are.

@@blammelathe word "should" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. The fact is, christians have no more respect for jewish people than any other religion or subgroup. I'm jewish, my family is jewish, but i went to a private christian school for 3 yrs of high school (long story, don't want to get into it) and everyone was quick to say how much they respected me and my beliefs, but they never put their money where their mouths were. At best i was disregarded, and at worst i was treated like a strange, exotic animal. People would point at me, gawking and whispering to their friends, i was asked constant rude, ignorant and invasive questions, and i was often the butt of disrespectful & offensive jokes. If I tried to point out the (manymanymany) ways christian belief is different from judaism, or tried to question things at all, i was shut down or ignored. Most of these people had never met a jewish person before, so i was expected to be a representative of my ENTIRE faith. But whenever I said anything they didn't like, I was completely ignored. Jewish people arent in any kind of uniquely privileged position to challenge fundamentalist christian dogma. The fact is, for all they love to use us as tools to prop up their own ass-backwards beliefs, they have absolutely no more respect for us than anyone else, and they really don't care what we have to say.

My (progessive, queer affirming) church had to sell our camp, it was bought by a fundamentalist Baptist group. Part of the sale agreement was that they would have to allow us to use it for 3 weeks every summer for the next 15 years. The first summer, they sent a letter announcing that the new rules for the property were that women had to wear skirts below the knee at all times; shorts, tank tops, sandals, and untucked shirts would never be allowed; cabins would be segregated by gender; LGBTQ+ people and "cross-dressing" (including long hair on men) were banned; we could not wear nametags showing our preferred pronouns; and worship services had to be conducted by men only. Obviously this did not go over well, and given that our pastor is a woman and most of our congregation is queer, these rules would essentially prevent us from using the property. Thankfully, the camp is technically located within a National Forest, and we were able to show that it is illegal for them to discriminate based on religion, gender, or sexuality on federal lands.

The obedience obsession comes from slavery times. Just read Frederick Douglass' autobiography where he talks about the small time white farmer who only owned a few slaves and was determined to "break" him. Southern white men were and are obsessed with others respecting their "place" as if their ego will face extermination without it.

I rolled an atv when I was 12. We was stuck under it for 2 hours. We was lucky we wasn’t injured, people die everyday in my community from them. There are currently 4 kids in the icu because of a sidexside accident. You’re allowed to ride all of these style vehicles on the open road now here, an it’s tragic when they wreck. Just absolutely horrible.

I usually agree with all your points but I wanted to give context to the summer camp thing. I worked at a summer camp for 5+ years. Most of those business practices and price points are normal and reasonable for a summer camp, Christian or no. Bringing your own Bedsheets is expected, living in a single room with bunks is expected. My camp had a communal bathhouse instead of private bathrooms, you had to walk across camp to shower. The price points are typical if not low. We had a program that was $1000 for a week and we were a non profit. So it sounds crazy but it isn't crazy because of who they are, that's just how camps are. Only thing that was different was the access to dietary requirements, but that also varies on what camp you go to

Hmm. I attend a rather rustic camp when I can afford it (now $1100 for a week). But they provide all meals and linens, will work with dietary restrictions, and even pick you up and take you back from nearby transit points in the area if you need it. It’s foreign language immersion, and so you get and live with three or four masters’ level teachers who speak fluently and give small classes a few times a day. Electricity, water, cedar sauna, all the comforts except technology. It’s on this huge, beautiful acreage with culturally authentic buildings.

10:30 I heard about this bill through Buttigieg when he was campaigning in the dem primary in 2020. The way he described his experience in those meetings with pence as he was mayor and still in the closet (he kinda had to work with him since he was gov of Indiana…) was really heartbreaking. What awful people Pence and his followers are!

I had to quickly do some research because when you said Bob Ballinger i had flash backs to a man named Billy Ballenger who came to my highschool and did a whole talk on addiction and had a crew of teenagers that toured with him and then invited us to an after school concert where he came out as christian and it turned into a christian concert and a talk about how jesus saved him in prison. The organization was called Break the Gray

Love how in his testimony Austin says he could "be in the Lord or be in the world" ... like "being in the world" is a sinful, not-totally-human-and-healthy thing to be. Living in reality and being a functioning adult who contributes is blasphemous I guess.

It’s always so funny when fundamentalist Christians say they “fell into the wrong crowd” as teenagers, because it always means they were just hanging out with kids who the rest of society would describe as nice and well behaved.

“the wrong crowd” is literally anyone who isn’t an evangelical christian. like i’m a college student with good grades and a solid life plan, but i’m an atheist so i would 10000% be the “wrong crowd”

In my case I did end up falling into the "wrong crowd" in my teens which were basically fundie Catholics who ended up messing up my mental health. I know these preachers would say I was never a Christian to begin with considering they consider Catholics to be idolaters/Pagans but I've found that traditionalist (or "trad") Catholics have so much in common with the fundie Protestants they hate so much (and I know the feeling is mutual), probably more than the average American Catholic which is profoundly ironic.

I had this happen to me AT MY JOB when I was in my early 20s, it was some shitbag father making a scene and he - notably not to me directly but to my manager - shouted about how immodest I was dressed. She immediately gave him a tongue lashing that not only shut him up, but instilled it me how important it was to defend the people working under you. I'll never forget how frightened and ashamed his daughter looked. She was probably around 13, too. I hope to all the gods she got out of that family as soon as she could.
