Jen, seeing you cry, made me cry. I'm a fundie cult survivor (something IBLP adjacent) and to see you care about what had happened to so many of us former fundies means everything. When you get angry in your videos, it feels like finally someone is angry on behalf after decades of being told that the abuse was actually love, and decades of trying to fix my supposed sin that led me to be rebellious and disobedient in the face of that "love."

Jordan and McKay covered their response- it's DISGUSTING. It's all... 'Using religion to victimize people is bad and we don't agree with it (big of you Porgan) BUT-- They are just so MEAN to Christains!! We aren't THAT extreme!!' It was so dismissive and disgusting. Especially at the end Morgan made it out like victims are just crying over nothing. 'If you came to OUR church with camera's we could look bad too- isn't that crazy?' First off Porgan just keep the victims out of your mouths. You have NO IDEA what they've been through. And for once IT'S NOT ABOUT YOU!! We all know how desperately they want to be the victims but sh^tting on SA survivors is a new low. And YES Porgan - you ARE that extreme. Sure Morgan has tattoos and wears pants. But you guys have the exact same beliefs as the IBLP. You just dress trendier, that's it. It's still all about control, misogyny, and forcing everyone into your hetero-normative standards. They openly admit to using the law & politics to force their beliefs onto others. They are just as culty in their sneakers and jeans as Bill Gothard was in his weird men's warehouse suits. But ya, THEY BROUGHT UP JEN!!!! They are so butt hurt about it. It's legit hilarious. They are the WORST. And everytime I want to feel for Morgan who was obviously a victim too she says something and I'm like NOPE. She was once a victim but is such a Christain Pick-Me that she is just as bad as Paul if not worse.

Recent law school grad here. My guess is that if they were underage their parents can give consent for them and if they are 18 they are responsible for reading the contract. They can almost certainly had a clause that said their signature indicates they read and understood the contract. Secondly, any issues in signing the contract was the result of third parties. Aka the parents. So it’s not TLC’s actions that led to any issues with misrepresentations. They would have to sue the parent because they’re the one that committed the wrongful act. Because of this, they would have to sue their parents either jointly or primarily. Finally, TLC is now part of one of the biggest media corporations in the world and it might not worth the trouble if you’re trying to move on with your life. All of this comes from my understanding of contracts while studying for the bar.

I’m truly curious how reality shows treat children and what the state requires of them as far as Peggy goes. Regardless the part later on when she talks about having to do counting on and signing a four or five year contract, but not understanding what she was signing, and then all of her money went to Jim, Bob anyway, she was probably old enough if she was living in the state of California to take that to court later, and demand that money back because she signed under dressed without legal representation, and did not understand what she was signing, but was old enough that she should have had those things. But of course Arkansas doesn’t give a shit. It’s just insane to think that the same people who were so critical of places like California, and yes, it has faults, but bear with me, are the same people whose rights regarding money and legal issues we’re so protected there

Their church will always go above me. I still believe in Jesus and my faith is not shattered. However, my faith in being a part of the body of Christ has been mostly shattered because practices that IBLP encouraged is still very much alive in churches. I didn't take this documentary as a trash on Christianity, but bringing the sinful practices similar to iblp that churches still endorse. It was brought to light so we can mourn for these survivors and make changes like HOLDING ABUSERS ESPECIALLY LEADERS ACCOUNTABLE and not letting them off in the name of grace. Thank you for doing this video. Your empathy & passion is palpable in all of your videos, but this one is beyond. You make me so proud to be a Jennonite! You're beautiful & I adore all you do!

I’m broke so I guess all I can do is to tolerate the ads if the monetization helps your channel in any way, as usual thank you for the content you gave us in this glorious Friday (instead of the Lord’s Day do we call it Jen’s Day?)

The Joshua Generation stuff is wild. I need to know more. How to spot them, how to stop them. As a mainstream speech and debate competitor and coach in both high school college and grad school levels back to 1995 … honestly chilling. They aren’t just keeping to their own little bubbles, not then, not now. Bet the Congressional page program is full of em too.

As someone who grew up this way, more or less hearing outsiders, talk about it and support it makes me feel less alone in it. It’s healing in a very important way

Watched Shiny, Happy,People. Jen you did an excellent job. I agree with you the Docuseries opened eyes, including mine on how bad JimBob and Michelle, plus some of their clones are in being deep in the IBLP. Plus, how horrible the IBLP is. I hope this Docuseries is the start in putting cracks in IBLP. Love your channel. Keep up the great work. Have a great Saturday

IBLP story time! Their former headquarters was in the town next to me. To clarify, this was in a very affluent area just outside of Chicago (considering their following I always found this location interesting but the founder was actually born in the town!). They owned a large office building that had several blocks of houses behind it. There was "Institute of Basic Life Principals" sign out front and everyone knew that office and homes belonged to people in "the cult". A high school right of passage was to "break into the cult", which just meant driving a car into their neighborhood (non-gated). All of the homes had a very distinctive front light at the front of their lawns, which could've meant nothing, but local lore said it was so you knew which house belonged to a cult member. My friends and I decided to drive in one night and as we drove further into the neighborhood we each took turns getting out of the car and running around. Eventually, another car appeared behind us and began following us at a very slow pace. We were getting freaked out and began to drive out the neighborhood, as we did that, someone came out from a front lawn and started to approach our car, but we sped out. Several classmates of mine who did the same thing shared similar stories.

I started crying. I grew up in organized religion, and I had so much false shit shoved down my throat among other things, and I'm still trying to undo the toxic things that I was taught to believe. Im in my 30s, and its so hard

Jen ❤ you made me cry!! 😭 I just have to say you have helped me so much. You've helped me recognize and examine parts of my abusive Catholic upbringing in such a loving, fun, nuanced and compassionate way. I am so proud of you, the FundieSnark & Deconstruction communities, and everyone who has survived religious trauma. Thank you.

The fact that Jen, an atheist, is sitting here crying *actual tears* over the IBLP survivors while P&M only care about themselves speaks volumes about her heart and character ❤ *Jen is literally an atheist and doing a better job at showing “Christian love” than the Christian KZitemr couple is.* That right there should tell you everything you need to know.

Damn Jen, you got me crying for the second time today, thinking about how we all can learn. I've deconstructed, disentangled, and am still finding my own path. I feel so much closer to Christ seeing these survivors talk about their will to live and make a better life for their own selves. I love you and James, tysm ❤

I am on my third rewatch. I am happy for you to be a part of it! You deserve it! I feel so broken listening to the accounts of these amazing people who survived this horrible abuse, I am in awe of their strength and I wish they could all heal from their past and the things they were forced to endure. Channels like yours help increasing their voices, and show people like me who could not even imagine these kinds of realities that we all should lead by love above anything else. These are heroes and I am proud to stand by them, I believe them and I wish them all the best in the future. And I also send all my love to all the victims who do not or cannot come out, I believe you and I respect you. I hope you all find the peace and the lo e you deserve

Ah! I’ve been a fan for awhile and I just love you guys! Unfortunately, my algorithm is being whack again and I didn’t see your last two videos. But, I’m kind of glad because I’m Watching Shiny Happy People and I was so excited to see you on there! Somehow I missed that happening… I’m so glad you’re getting this recognition as a commentator/s and of course I’m enjoying your commentary in the documentary. Nice!

Not a former fundie, but a former Catholic. Lived through the abuse “scandal” coming to light, and had my own experiences. The fact that this documentary makes these survivors front and center, and gives them space to tell their stories, and the trauma they endured, and the years of therapy, and the damage done? It’s personal for me. Those of us who have been through it, we get it. And it’s not easy to tell your story to anyone, let alone an audience of millions. I wish them every blessing. They deserve them.

So from what I understand, TLC signed a contract specifically with the production company that Jim Bob set up. That's why the money went to Jim Bob and it was up to him to disperse the money - the Duggar family members were seen legally as contractors working for the production company. Ofc, there are laws about compensation for work which Jim Bob (and his production company) violated. Add in that they listed adults as minors and it's entirely possible that contract could be considered invalid. For sure the later contract for the lump sum in exchange for future labor _forever_ is invalid. Contract law states specifically that contracts must be for a set period of time - they can't say "forever." So the kids that signed the lump sum contract signed an invalid contract that can't be enforced. There's also a good argument that could be made that Jill signed that 5 year contract under duress which could nullify it as well. But in order to actually get the contracts nullified, they would need to take their own father to court and I don't think any of them are quite willing to do that. It was a major difficulty for Jill to simply take her father to arbitration just to get minimum wage for her time on Counting On. Add in that these kids were not given a proper education and don't know anything about contract law beyond what their father has told them... They probably don't even know that they signed illegal contracts in the first place, let alone how to challenge it. It's similar to how a lot of corporations rely on their low wage workers not knowing their rights or that they can sue to take advantage of them. My first job did that to me when they fired me illegally - I didn't realize I could have sued until several years later and after the statute of limitations was past.

I have enjoyed your videos for a couple of years now, Jen - all the way from the U.K. We do have cult like communities in the U.K. (Hillsong etc) but they’re not mainstream like the US as we’re secular. Our 2021 census revealed that approx. 22 million people do not follow a religion (a third of our population!) SHP was insightful and your contribution was great.
