Dullahan, also known as the Headless Rider, meaning "Dark Man", is one of the most frightening figures in Irish folk legends. This dark being appears as a man or woman riding a black horse, but without a head on his shoulders, headless. Dullahan carries his head under his arm; it appears dead and rotten, sometimes depicted as wormy cheese, but his hair is always straight. With an evil smile stretching from ear to ear, Dullahan wanders around in the darkness, terrorizing and searching for his victim.
The stories about Dullahan are truly frightening. He carries a whip made from a human spine. In some accounts, he is said to pull a wagon decorated with funerary objects tied to his horse. In this wagon are skulls filled with candles used to light the way. The wheels of the wagon are made of human thigh bones and covered with meat gnawed by worms and dried human skin.
