I think that Duncan Sheik is one of the most under-appreciated artists of our time. This is a beautiful song. The melody is wonderful, Duncan has a beautiful voice & the song is delivered in such a heartfelt way that we’re convinced it comes from personal experience. The lyric, however, is what sets the song apart. He has taken personal experience and translated it into a beautiful poem set to music. Songs are poems set to music. In a way, this song reminds me of some of Jackson Browne’s ballads. My interpretation: I believe the lyric is symbolic. The singer is a man struggling with sadness & depression and the woman in the song (represented by the feminine pronoun) is a metaphor for Happiness. Try substituting "happiness" everywhere you see "she" or "her" in the song. He believes his are the wounds only Happiness can heal, but when he reaches out for "her" (Happiness), she runs away. Surprisingly, the substitution works. This makes it a much deeper & more universal song than a song about 2 lovers. Its about happiness being fleeting & "running away.”

Here it is 2019 and this song is tops on my playlist. This past year has been challenging and I blew off my (in)significant other because of my insecurities. He and I are two troubled souls looking for a life to make some kind of sense. For some strange reason, this song gives me hope. Thanks for the upload and the achingly beautiful ballad from Duncan Shiek.

Kind of wonder where the world would be if this kind of music was still being played on the radio or considered "pop." Souful, genuine, original, and just plain good music & lyrics. Keep on listening to Tay-Tay and Bae-Bae tho, 2020.

@@rockyevans1584 The whole point of public mass brodcasting is to affect the public.From the music that inspired 60-70's drug culture to 80's hedonism, to 90's nihilism, to 2000's whiny emo, to the complete degeneracy of the 2010 & 20's. Of course not all music falls into those categories, but these are the exception, not the rule.

@@itswhip really? I could have sworn it was to make money. What purpose was served by bludgeoning the masses with endless Nickelback song and similar bands? You've intrigued me but I don't think I agree at all

@@rockyevans1584 There's a lot of angles to it. Of course it was about making money as well. How else could they continue to bankroll the musical propaganda? I remember about 2006 when our local radio market (Philadelphia) just up and killed 2/3 of the rock stations. Even the decade long tenured dj's were left clueless. There was about a week of silence on those channels, then lo & behold they were each switched to hip hop, which is inarguably a cancer on vulnerable minds with the messaging it promotes. Why else do it? There were already 3 local hip hop stations at the time. Since then, things like digital music devices, satellite radio & music streaming have taken over the long-held position of terrestrial radio, but in its day, it certainly "controlled" the music heard by the masses, thus controlling the minds of the masses, to whichever degree you're willing to admit.

@@itswhip what you describe can be explained by supply and demand, and I think you're reading to much into the influence music has. No one is forced to listen to the radio, thank goodness, and anyone stupid enough to be swayed by lyrical content isnt going to be saved by whatever music you deem appropriate. Your last line was just needless condescension, you may think I'm ignorant but I think your view is pretty stupid. We can agree to disagree I'm sure

Any idea how he does those triplet- staccato sounding strums? There were more in barely breathing from this recording session, super tight and sounds amazing, I can't find anything describing the technique tho
@rockyevans1584

He does actual triplet strumming in this song actually, but there's a different slow staccato sounding strum he just slips in on barely breathing, I gotta figure that out it adds so much

@@rockyevans1584 I do a down-up a fast down-up-down with a little light muting. I strum all the strings and mute mostly with my left hand, but it looks like he only plays the low 5-6 strings with a little palm muting. It's weird feeling because most of the accented beats are on an up-strum. If i think too much i mess it up. :)

Who would have thought that music woulld become so massively disgusting by 2022. I know this was a quarter of a century ago, but what the hell happened? And why has so many people taken to the low class, mindless, computerized, garbage pumped out today? How is it that young people can find it appealing, when this video is only one example of the amazingly rich history of contemporary music we once had? I'm utterly dumbfounded. If you asked me back then that the 90s would be considered a great decade for music, or worse the last decade for great music, I would have looked at you like you were nuts. But it shure would be nice to be able to turn on a radio again and hear real musicians, singing real music again.
