The part where Paul says "I recognize your footsteps, Old man" had a double meaning. He was referring to his Mentor, Gurney but also and mainly, he was referring to the worm. "Shai Hulud", the Fremen name for the worms means "The *old man* of the desert". It's scary to think about if you know Dune lore but the was his first true and somewhat clear glimpse of "The golden path"
@hoon_sol

It's a particularly genius addition due to how the part about recognizing Gurney's footsteps earlier is actually in the book too; including a reference to him as "old man" before they fight there and then using it for the double entendre later is brilliant.

@@LIPPSMACKER The books are phenomenal, however i feel the responsibility to worn people wanting to dive into the series - about what to expect. Classic Sci-Fi, is very different from modern writing style, it focused largely on things like inner dialogue, world-building, the over-arching narrative/story, and above all - philosophy and themes. You don't get the sort of well described action sequences you would from something like "The Expanse" book series, (which is specifically the best "modern sci-fi book series of all time which was then adapted into one of- if not THE single greatest sci-fi tv show ever made to boot). Plus "Dune" was Herbert's first book he ever wrote, so his prose aren't the best, nor the pacing at times. That said, it improves on those two front significantly from book 2 and on. Anyways... at the end of the day, it's pretty much the "Lord of The Rings" of sci-fi and is utterly brilliant, however it's not for everyone. So if you find yourself just not getting into it, by the end of the first book, don't worry - there are plenty of people who loved the lore, world-building, and even the story - but frankly dislike the way the series was written.

Same! That scene was the point where I finally fully bought into Timothy being Paul Atreides. I'm still not the biggest fan of him as an actor in general, however, on the whole - he was pretty damn phenomenal in this movie. His performance in that tent scene was absolutely brilliant! That said, Duncan's last stand scene was easily the best in the film imo. All the people who bitched about Mamoa being supposedly an awful casting choice, just couldn't have been more wrong. Going in I had seen Jason play a number of characters over his career that most people hadn't seen - and instead only knew him for Stargate Atlantis, GOT, and/or Aquaman, which was why they were unaware of how good of an actor he actually is. He was great in the tv series: "Frontier," "The Red Road," and more recently "See," so I knew he was more than just a badass surfer-bro. So i knew he actually was a superb choice to play Idaho, and in the end i was proven correct, he was awesome as Duncan. Seeing as how Duncan's by far my fav character in the entire Dune saga, that last stand was even more badass and devastatingly tragic than i possibly could have ever hoped for. That said, even tho this film as a whole was/is legit one of the greatest films I've ever seen, (especially wen it comes specifically to sci-fi/fantasy movies), I really wished Duncan needed more screen time imo. The same for both Thufir and Dr. Yueh. And aside for the batle for Arakin being far too short, the slightly diminished roles if Yueh an Thufir are prolly my only major criticism of this masterpiece.

Glad you liked it! Indeed, the story is quite compelling but worldbuilding needs its time, and they stayed pretty close to the original story and scenes of the book. Some details were omitted, but that's unavoidable when adapting such a lore-heavy book. As to give you some info on the lore and politics of the Duniverse, so it becomes a bit more clear: You have 4 major powerblocks in this universe: 1)The Emperor (and his army, the Sardaukar) 2)The Landsraad, consisting of a dozen Great Houses (and many Minor Houses, all vying for power). Think Game-of-Thrones here, but in sci-fi setting. ;-) 3)The Bene Gesserit; a semi-religious Order of women whom have certain powers (like the Voice, or being a Truthsayer, and some others not shown yet) and exert a lot of behind-the-scenes influence, but mostly stay low-profile 4) The Guild Navigators and CHOAM; a strong mercantile power, with a monopoly on spacetravel It was more or less explained in the beginnings when Paul talked with his dad on Caladan: House Atreides is a growing power, politically and military, and the Emperor feels threatened. But he can't directly attack the House, because otherwise the Landsraad (the ensemble of Great Houses) will turn against him. As said, they each constitute a "big power" in this Duniverse. So the Landsraad and the Emperor keep each other in check, as it were. Meanwhile, the Bene Gesserit are working from the shadows, on both sides - they primarily are concerned with their own plans and devices, to create the Kwizatsh Haderach. They manipulate from the shadows and actually form the third great power in this universe, but seldom show it openly. They also exert power by political marriages, or become concubines for political advantages - which is why Jessica wasn't married to Leto, though it was done to benefit him and House Atreides, not herself or the Sisterhood. The fourth independent power, which is hardly touched upon in this first part of the movie, is CHOAM and the Spice Guild. They're like a huge mercantile power, and the Guild Navigators are the only ones able to move/teleport (technically folding space) between planets, so without them, there would be no viable interstellar Imperium. Which make them essential and an enormous powerhouse as well - though, of course... they are and remain dependent on the Spice. That's why: whom controls Arrakis, controls the Empire. So the Emperor can't directly attack a Great House like Artreides, or he risks all-out war with the Landsraad, consisting of the other Great Houses. Instead, he uses an indirect attack, with and through the Harkonnens - who want their fiefplanet back with all the Spice - doing the grunt work for him. The emperor knows they will be easily instigated that way, certainly because the Atreides and Harkonnen already have a centuries-old feud going on between them. It's a sort of proxy war, thus. He does help the Harkonnen to make sure they'll win - hence why he sends a few battalions of Sardaukar, his elite troops. But no-one (especially the Landsraad) may know about that. (That's also why they killed Liet, because she was going to expose the Emperor's meddling). Also, some details one might have missed in the movie: About the time in which the story plays: in the beginning of the movie they show it's the year 10191, but this is not 10191 AD, it's 10191 AG. AG (After Guild - when the Spice Guild was made and started exploring the stars), and BG (Before Guild) are the iterations used and the lore in the books gives some indication as how that relates to our AD (Anno Domini). The most precise date - with a high level of accuracy - is that the first Dune novel which is set in 10,191 AG, corresponds approximately to 23,148 AD. It is mentioned the "space age" takes place in 11,000 BG, and assuming this would mean it began in 1957 AD as this is when the first satellite, Sputnik, was launched, we can rebuild the whole timeline to our AD. So if you add the year 11,000 BG to 10,191 AG you’re left with a time span of 21,191 years. So if you add 21,191 years to 1957 AD, you’re left with 23,148 AD as the most likely date. Quite some time! Most casual watchers of the movie think it's almost 10000 years in the future, but it's actually more than twice as much! Now...as far as the melee fights and old/new tech are concerned, it's important to realize that in the Duniverse, while there is very high-tech at CERTAIN aspects, others are low tech (which gives the retro-feeling of the movie) but with a reason. It may seem strange at first sight, but note, however, that this has an in-story explanation, namely: thousands of years ago, there was a rebellion against "thinking machines" (AI) called the Butlerian Jihad. Humanity won (barely), but since that time there is a very strong taboo on creating anything resembling robots or AI, and humanity started to develop their own powers (aided by the melange/spice), such as Mentats (basically human supercomputers). This is the reason you don't see any highly developed robots, AI or even computers in this world. This mix of old and new tech is a defining, historically explained element of the Duniverse; it's part of the worldbuilding and lore. Now, specifically about the melee combat: maybe you missed it, but they explained the shields in that fighting scene; they said "the slow sword can penetrate it". This is a hint that ALL objects with high kinetic energy are stopped dead in their tracks when hitting the shield, but SLOW objects can penetrate it. Meaning: ALL of our "modern" warfare weapons would largely become obsolete: machine-guns and all fast moving shells/bullets etc. become useless, but swords and knifes that are SLOWLY moved can still reach a target through the shields. Making the use of swords and knifes, after thousands of years, the dominant way of fighting once again. It's actually a cool twist. That's all I'm going to say about it, because any more would get you into spoiler territory for part 2! ;-) Hope that made things more clear!

Just to add (because it's one of my favorite parts of hte books), they DO have what we'd think of as advanced weaponry. They have lasers ("lasguns") but they dare not use them. In the book lore, a lasgun shot hitting a shield sets off an explosion akin to an enormous nuclear bomb. That's yet another reason personal weapons are low tech. They also DO have nuclear weapons, and in the books will refer to "the family nukes" as last resort options. Most of the great house families have some amount of nuclear weapons.

@@mtascp05 "and people have such short attention spans now" That so true. Even for visual media. I've seen some rare reacters complain Dune "is boring", and then I'm like: if you find worldbuilding and characterization boring, then I guess it's boring. But that's what you get with a bunch of people getting used to the bling-bling-pow-pow movies of Michael bay, that always use the down-throdden paths and tropes of the typical Hollywood movie, that have almost no worldbuilding and characterization, but replace it with explosions from beginning to end. The vast majority of our movies today are "no-brain" popcorn movies, just to provide some empty entertainment. Which is nice once and a while, but not if you don't get to see anything else anymore. If you never have to think or appreciate the intricacies of a movie, then watching brain-dead movies will lead to becoming brain-dead as well, at least cinematically. I've always thought that, if classics like "Lawrence of Arabia" would be made today, it would be a flop and never become the classic masterpiece that it's regarded now. A lot of people these days just can't appreciate a movie that slowly expands its world. They've become used to seeing crap as the standard, and crap begets crap.

“A million deaths is not enough for the traitor Yueh.” Yueh’s storyline in the books is significantly more tragic, and it being cut for time is one of the biggest casualties of this adaptation IMO. Once Yueh learned that his wife (a Benne Gesserit, like Jessica) was captured by the Harkonnens, he agreed to betray House Atreides - because the Harkonnen reputation for sadism is legendary. He knew his involvement with Baron Harkonnen would shame him forever, and it would certainly lead to his death and the deaths of everyone he cared for - including his wife. That was the better choice to Yueh than even allowing the possibility that his wife was alive and undergoing the kind of torture that is synonymous with Harkonnen.

The Atreides are named after the Greek descendants of Atreus, the most well known scion of which (besides Atreus) was Agamemnon, the Greek leader of the Trojan War. It is actually confirmed within the book that Agamemnon was an ancestor of the Atreides. Why is this interesting? Because according to Greek mythology all descendants of Atreus were cursed by the Gods to live a life of tragedy.

Yueh is not evil. Suk school doctors are normally immune to corruption by their mental training. The doctor accepted the bargain only because he has a plan to avenge it (avenge his wife being dead most likely) and deal a blow to the Harkonnens by turning the lord he serves, Leto into a mortal weapon, while ensuring Paul and Jessica's escape in the meantime. In fact, he was ultimately loyal to the Atreides family even by sacrificing Leto to the Harkonnens. 20:29, that's exacly why the Harkonnens crippled the ornithopter so the pilots wouldn't be interrogated and reveal the plan...

Villeneuve has already said he wants to adapt Dune Messiah, so hopefully this does well and we get that too as it expands on Paul's story in amazing and tragic ways. Getting back to this film, it's very, very important to recognize that the Fremen, no matter who is in charge, are still being exploited. Duke Leto, regardless of how decent and honorable he was, still helped perpetuate a society that brutalized them. As I’m sure you have been told a few times by now, this movie covers roughly the 1st half of the 1st book. Part 2 will finish out the 1st book. The DUNE universe is filled with mystery and fabulous lore spanning thousands of years. It’s absolutely worth reading at least the first 2 or 3 books. After that it starts to get a bit weird, even for sci-fi. Something that a lot of people don’t catch or totally interpret wrong is the scene with the spitting. It highlights a couple interesting things. One, that on Arrakis, water/moisture is the most precious resource. Most of Fremen society is built around water and water conservation. So it’s is a major sign of respect to give your moisture to another. For example, When they were making coffee, they all contributed moisture for the group. Two, it shows how easily different cultures can misunderstand one another and how that can lead to conflict. On Calidan, water is everywhere. No one gives it a second thought. So someone “spitting” in your presence would be considered rude or disrespectful. The subtle complexity of the writing in these books is amazing. I highly suggest reading these books.

Dune (published in 1965) was actually the source material from which George Lucas took quite a few ideas for his first Star Wars movie. Dune books arent easy to convert into the movie format but I think Denis Villeneuve has the required vision to actually make the Dune books into movies which stay pretty true to books. The first book consists of a lot of inner monologue and visions which doesnt make it the easiest material to convert into a movie that attracts the more casual movie going crowd. There is a pretty decent tv series though that includes books 1 and 2. Frank Herbert was the original author but after his death his son continued writing books about the Dune Universe.

The Fremen aren't native to Dune. They weren't even the first to colonize it. They're just the ones who decided to go live in the desert according to the rules of the desert, rather than to live like everyone else who's lived there before. The Spice (Melange) doesn't really belong to anyone, but if it belonged to someone, it would, ostensibly, belong to the Emperor, since it's his planet. The issue, is that for whatever reason, the "senate" (called the Landsraad) of sorts, comprised of the heads of the various noble Houses, is something of a check against the Emperor's power, and prevents him from directly claiming the planet and the Spice. Part of that is because of the Spacing Guild that needs the Spice. The Guild wants everyone fighting over it, so that no one can control it, and therefore the Guild remains fundamentally in control of it all by controlling space travel. Piss off the Guild, you don't go anywhere. Cut off their Spice, you don't go anywhere. If you can't go anywhere, your planet and House don't last long, and the Empire dies even more quickly than that. It's basically a political Mexican Standoff. Unfortunately, the original author forgot to account for the fact that it requires interstellar travel to get from Earth to Arrakis in the first place. His son wrote some books that addressed this (in not the most skillful way), but in any case, it means interstellar travel IS possible without Spice...just not as efficiently, perhaps. But, such knowledge would be a serious Achilles' Heel to the Guild. So much so that it's likely banned entirely, on pain of total extermination of any House that used it. But it's an empty threat anyway.

Anderson makes the story complete in my opinion. They still make books (Filler) to the 16 that I have read. Duncan Idaho, Norma Cenva, Leto II and Erasmus are some of the best characters in the Dune Saga (what I call it), and the books have soooo... many more great characters and great stories. Dune is the first book and starts the series, but the 10,000 years the "saga" represent is far more impressive. My favorite book is God Emperor of Dune. Most of the story in this movie is told between the lines, and that's Villeneuve's choice - otherwise you'd need at least 10 hours of tv series just to get to the point when Atreides land on Arrakis. A brief rundown of the story (all of this happens before chapter 1 of the book): The human race has spread across the stars, and settled into a feudal society - at the top is the Emperor, then the Great Houses, Houses Minor, etc. The Emperor is Top Dog, because he has the Sardaukar - a fighting force so elite that it takes the combined might of all the Great Houses just to make it even. No one knows where the Sardaukar come from, but the Atreides Mentat (a sort of human computer conditioned to analyse data in ways normal humans never could) figured it out - the Sardaukar are recruited from the Imperial Prison Planet - Salusa Secundus (this plotline is dropped in the film) - a place so brutal that it takes an extraordinary killer just to survive there, and the best of the best are recruited for the Sardaukar. With this knowledge, the mentat, Thufir Hawat, with the help of the atreides master of arms Gurney Halleck, and Duncan Idaho (probably the finest swordsman in the Imperium), they managed to train a group of Atreides fighters to be almost as good as the Sardaukar, and the Emperor is having none of it. So the Emperor orders Atreides to take over Arrakis from their old enemies - House Harkonnen, as a means of luring the Atreides into a trap. The Atreides know it's a trap, but they go anyway, because Arrakis is home to the Fremen - raised in conditions that make Salusa Secundus look like a picnic, they are a fighting force without equal, and the Atreides hope that if they can win their allegiance, they will be able to withstand the trap, even with the Harkonnen aided by the Sardaukar. Another thread to this is the Bene Geserit Sisterhood, who have been pulling the strings behind the curtains for thousands of years. The Emperor has no son, only daughters, because Bene Geserit have such complete control of their bodies that they can conciously choose the sex of their offspring at conception, and the Emperor's Bene Geserit wife was ordered to have only daughters (for political reasons). Also - the Bene Geserit have been working, for thousands of years, to produce the Kwisatz Haderach - a male Bene Geserit who would have the power to access the genetic memories of both male, and female ancestors (the BG can only access the female), and bridge space, and time. Their efforts have culminated in two bloodlines - Atreides, and Harkonnens - that's why Jessica was ordered to have only daughters - so they could wed an Atreides daughter to a Harkonnen, and complete the bloodline, but Jessica disobeyed, and the potential Kwisatz Haderach has been born a generation early. Also - remember how I told you the Sardaukar are an elite fighting force that are the terror of the known universe? They are so elite, that a Sardaukar trooper can almost match a Bene Geserit in combat. And the Fremen wipe the floor with Sardaukar in any sort of fair fight. that's not a jab at Sardaukar, but a testament to how insanely skilled they are. Oh, and there's also the Spice - which the Spacing Guild uses to make space travel possible, and the Spice can only be found on one planet in the universe - Arrakis.

@@LIPPSMACKER Part of the bloodline mixing by the Bene Geserit. Notice that Leto says that he should have married her. Officially she is the Concubine of Duke Atreides. She was supposed to bear a female child. As a Bene Geserit she can control the sex of a fetus. I believe they had planned to match the daughter up with Feyd (Rabban's little brother) if she wasn't the Kwisatz Haderach. Paul's sister Alia, the baby in the visions, pretty much is it though. I read the books years before the first movie came out. There are so many interwoven dream sequences, complicated relationships, intrigues, political alliances, and conspiracies it is hard to present with continuity as a film. This version is cinematically beautiful and tells the story adequately. I enjoyed this and look forward to the follow up. Thanks for looking at this and giving your thoughts.

"Bad people get portrayed in favourable lights" Keep it up lol, you're doing great. Think back to how Zendaya's Chani asked "who will our next oppressors be?", and who the film cuts to next... Its complicated though. The books take their time with the true meaning of the story and even there in the books, with full insight into all the characters thoughts, many people completely miss what's going on. We may have to wait until the third movie for many people to realise things that are harder to portray in cinematic adaptation.

13:14 - The Emperor's plan actually accounted for the loss in spice production. According to law, only the Emperor could hoard spice reserves (because if another great house were to have great reserves, they could influence the spice market and bargain it for political power), so the drop-off in spice production would increase the worth of spice, making the Emperor the only one legally allowed to profit off of the increased value of his spice hoard.

And it wouldn't take much. All they needed was a line somewhere where he says he knows he is going to die, but he has too free his wife from her agony... knowing that it will likely mean her death as well. Other than that, this was wonderfully done!

The book is dense reading, a lot to chew on. Often considered un-adaptable to film. David Lynch directed an oddball version in the 80s that got a lot right and a a lot wrong. The Sci-Fi Channel produced a miniseries that did the story a lot of justice despite its limited budget and spotty acting. I would wait for this version's part 2 before watching the above mentioned attempts or reading the book. The original book has a number of direct sequels from the original author but only the first 3 are worth a read.

Hey there! Sometimes a button gives you too much distraction 😅 Here comes my unorthodox comments: Athreides looks like to me based on Ancient Greek culture European continent. Harkonens sounds like a Finnish but maybe cultural point is Slavic countries. Gom jabbar also another arabic word. Gom means needle and Jabbar means forcefully I think. Bene geserit sounds like to me a jewish cult aiming to control other folks to get power and reputation among them. Jessica like Virgin Mary, Paul like mesiah Jesus. Arrakis looks like arabic cultural lands ready for invasion. Lisan al gaib means in Arabic prophecy. So also we can count as like prophet. So bene geserit seeded a mind into arrakis people long time ago that there is a saviour will come bla bla. So it’s like writer doesn’t believe that Islam comes from Devine power in his brain. Only made up by Jewish idea. Like newer version in our time. Anyway it’s really great movie by the way. I only didn’t like Zendeya’s bad acting that’s all. Take care
