Jamey Stegmeier doesn't even know that the resource is called Spice. He couldn't remember it in a recent video. I'm not really a Dune nutcase (though I've always held it highly compelling and influential), but I find it sad that any prolific designer doesn't know much about Frank Herbert's opus, as it has to be one of the most important works of the 20th century. Something the designer clarified in Discord: if you remove troops using a Combat card (like the second effect of the one demonstrated), you *lose* the strength they contribute (so, in this case, 2 per troop removed). The option is there to allow you to save troops you didn't need for victory, or to get out of a conflict where you aren't going to benefit from. And if you don't have at least one troop deployed when the conflict is resolved, you're not included, no matter how many Swords you revealed earlier. You literally didn't show up. Yes, this could mean rounds where no one fights and no one gets rewards.

Makes sense. I only just purchased it and haven’t played the game yet. But… it seems kind of intuitive that this is how it would work. I take it that it wasn’t felt to be obvious in practice? (Rodney does stress your 2nd point, though, that you have to have troops in the conflict or you’re simply not involved. But it’s probably a point that needs to be stressed, because you could definitely see people wanting to play the card and say “that counts!”)

Thank you so much for all you do, you have been a major help to me and my enjoyment in this wonderful hobby. I always search to see if you've done a video on how to play anytime I get a new game, or sometimes even if I'm just thinking about getting one. For games I know how to play confidently, but maybe haven't played in awhile, I will always look up your video to remind myself of set up, and having the time sections broken up, makes it so easy to find something if there was one rule I wanna remind myself of before playing. Not only that, during the pandemic I've gotten my sister into board games and we play games online, and/or over a webcam. If I send her a new game or we're gonna play one online, I just send her the link to your video, and it makes learning it that much easier. So again thank you, second only to the people who play the games with me, you make being in this hobby better for me!

It’s kind of funny… I don’t play a lot of worker-placement games. But I’ve played “Lords of Waterdeep” and I found myself realizing that although there seem to be a ton of rules, each of those spaces really does a remarkably good job of telling you how they work. I had the game on my shelves for 3 months. The rules looked daunting. But after watching this video I was ready to play in less than an hour! Luckily I already know a few deck building games but this channel is really superb. NOT only to study new rules but also to relearn games you did not play for a longer period of time. One small REMARK though. In these COVID times it is perhaps good to make a small attachment about the solo play. Lots of people would like that in these times, I am sure about that. Side note: I got beaten heavely by both bots in my first 2 games 😀

@27:16 "Additionally -- and this is very easy to forget -- but now, any time a conflict card is revealed at the beginning of the round, that shares the name of the space where you have a control flag, you may immediately choose to move one troop from your supply, directly into the conflict." To combat this and adopt a useful mnemonic, I advise everyone to simply place one of their cubes from the supply, on the control marker itself. The presence of that weirdly placed cube is enough to suggest the need for an update during Round Start, as you can easily glance over the spaces and get reminded of this additional troop placement. (Do not replenish this cube until the conflict is resolved, so that it marks the state of acknowledgement. I.e. if there is no cube on the control marker, its absence should denote that you've used this extra ability for this round. That said, do not forget to replenish it in the Recall phase.) Frankly, the iconography regarding the troop deployment could've been better. I can't suggest how exactly, the designers were probably trying to tackle and streamline this from many angles, until they felt this was good enough, but I'm seeing that everyone has a step memorization issue when it comes to moving cubes to garrisons and/or conflict area. But other than that, this is a very neat hybrid design. I didn't like Clank! that much, but this is a much more evolved and involved, more deep, thematic and practical board game. It is also funny to me how it successfully uses some elements of an unpublished game I've been designing throughout the last year -- in other words, how we're seemingly tapping into the same unknown, without communicating to each other. It's the little details I don't fret too much about, because whoever comes first serves as a perfect case study of what could've be done better.

Hey Rodney... Do you know the myth about the Great Spice Hoard? The story says there is a hoard of melange, a gigantic hoard, big as a great mountain. The hoard is concealed in the depths of a distant planet. It is not Arrakis, that planet. It is not Dune. The spice was hidden there long ago, even before the First Empire and the Spacing Guild. The story says Paul Muad'Dib went there and lives yet beside the hoard, kept alive by it, waiting.

You're video explained so much more than the rulebook. thank you so much. BUT, couple questions: (1: Can the mentat go to a space someone already has an agent in? (2: Are intregue cards trashed after you play them? (3: Do you flip over the new combat card at the start of the round, or at the start of the combat phase? (4: At the start of the combat phase, can you add troups to the conflict if you do not have an agent on a combat space, or is deploying troups only possible if you have an agent on a combat space? (5: In a 2 player game, when you have house hagal as the 3rd player, do they automaticaly go last no matter where they are sitting in relation to the player going first? Or can it go second if the first player is sitting to its right? (Assuming that it has a place on the table.) (6: Just to be sure, If no one puts troups into the conflict and thus no one wins the the conflict, does the conflict card still have to be discarded? I thought I had the rules down, then when me and my brother sat down to play it, it took us an hour to set it and figure out some of the minor rules, then took us 3 hours or so to wander through the game play, while still figuring out the rules. Lol. You're a life saver!

1) No. 2) Yes. 3) I forget what the video says, but this is covered there. 4) You deploy troops only when you assign agents to conflict spaces 5) I didn't teach the 2 player rules here, so that's not something I can assist with. 6) Yes, it's still discarded. Hope that helps!

If I could get clarification for one thing: say you have 2 agents. You send one to Rally Troops and recruit the 4 troops to the garrison (which was empty previously). Then send the 2nd agent to a combat zone with the benefit of recruiting one troop and move the troop directly into the conflict zone. Would I then be able to send 2 of the troops I recruited from the rally troops to the conflict zone or are they untouchable until the new round?
@WatchItPlayed

You'd be able to send 2 of the troops you rallied that turn.

Question. So tired players share the reward of the next lower level, easy. But let's examine this scenario. A 4 player game. A&B each have 5 points, let's say. C has 4 points and D has 3. So how would this scenario play out? Obviously player D is assed out, person the language, but what about player C?

Hey there, I'm always happy to try to help with rules questions, but if the answer is provided in the video, than I have to direct you there. You'll find an index in the description to help you find the section you might be looking for (this exact example you're asking about is shown).

Hi Rodney. Let's say the round is finished. I still have some cards in my drawing deck. so, when I shuffle my discard deck, do I have to shuffle it together with the drawing deck?, or, I have to put underneath my drawing deck? (for instance, as in Lost Ruins of Arnak?). thank you.
@WatchItPlayed
2 жыл бұрын
Hey Marco, you only shuffle your discard pile when your draw deck runs out (you don't automatically shuffle it at the end of every round). You'll find that covered here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/z6yOn3mPsYN2mY4

The rule book doesn't explain these 2 points conclusively: 1. What if a player reaches 4 influence with any faction and gets the marker for that faction. Next the player at some point moves back down to 3 influence. Is the faction marker (and thus the point) lost, despite another player not having overtaken them? Following the rules that say that the alliance is only lost when a player overtakes them, this would have an obvious answer. 2. You keep the played cards during the agent phase in front of you (the rule book doesn't seem to force players to do this. It tells you to play your cards face up in front of you, but doesn't tell you to keep them there. Clean-up does mention removing the cards in front of you, but that doesn't mean there have to be any there when you reach that point even though you played a couple cards). If at any point, you need to draw a card, but you can't and so need to shuffle, do you also shuffle your played cards in immediately? It seems like an oversight to not be able to draw them for a full cycle of the deck (not having played yet, i don't know if this is even a situation that could occur). Without having played the game yet (and not knowing the relevance of these questions) these are my biggest gaps that i couldn't understand.
@WatchItPlayed
Жыл бұрын
Hi Martin: 1) Yes you lose the Alliance and Victory point. 2) Your played cards stay in front of you during the Agent Phase (are you asking if they are immediately discarded? If so, nope, they stay in front of you). You only discard them during clean up. So if you need to draw and can't, the cards you reshuffle do NOT include the cards face up in front of you, since they won't have hit the discard pile yet. Hope that helps!

26:46 So we actually bumped into a new problem on this, where Arrakeen came up twice, first time was won by Blue, thus gaining control, second time ended in a tie with both earning the 2nd place reward. SO IN THIS CASE, does Blue maintain control, or is Arrakeen "liberated" to where nobody controls it?
@WatchItPlayed
2 жыл бұрын
I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean by "it came up twice". I shot this long enough ago that I don't remember if there are duplicate cards in the Conflict deck, but I didn't think there were... are you saying the same card came up twice in the same game? Putting that aside for a moment, just looking at your tie situation, if there is a tie between 2 players for the the first place award, no one gets the first place award (so you skip that top box entirely): kzitem.info/news/bejne/z6yOn3mPsYN2mY4 Not sure if this is addressing your question.

Question here, if I activate a trash effect and choose to trash a card from my hand, do I have to remove it immediately? Or do I get a chance to play it for the last time during my next agent phase then trash it at the end of the round?
@WatchItPlayed
25 күн бұрын
When you resolve an effect, it resolves right away. So if you're trashing a card you haven't played yet, you don't get to play it after it's been trashed.

I'm back after 2 years. Finally have this game in the mail on the way to me. Can no longer deny that this game is one of the great ones. Watching the video everything seems simple and streamlined so far, except for conflict resolution when there are ties etc. Oof... that could be better indicated on the reward cards themselves... rather than having it be a confusing rule set you must remember.

Yeah the tie rules feel like "something" when they are all explained out, but in practice I'm optimistic you'll find they aren't so clunky. Sometimes the "explaining" is more fussy than the doing. Have a great time playing Jeff!

When you gain the benefit of 'trash a card' eg you send an agent to the selective breeding space, can you trash from your deck? Your remaining hand? Or your remaining hand + discard but not deck? Is this ever different like when you can trash a card as the reward for winning a conflict or a benefit of certain cards reveal functions?

Ho Rodney, great job! I am just still uncertain about claiming the Mentat. Do I have to use my agent and pay in order to get the Mentat as you showed in the video (that makes a little sence) or shoud I just use a card and collect him? Thank you
@WatchItPlayed

Don’t forget, the Mentat space also lets you draw a new card - and when you play the Mentat you’ll also get the ability on the card you play. Sometimes that’s as important as placing the agent (or Mentat).
