Love the video. One nitpick; they didn't "shy away" from artificial intelligence, they strictly outlawed it across the galaxy because AI nearly ended the entire human species. Given recent events and our current trajectory here in the real world, this is probably one of the most prophetic parts of the book. Especially considering it was originally published in 1965.

Count Fenring is very interesting and always underused in the movies. He is very close to being the Kwisatz Haderach, there are probably a half dozen failed bloodlines in the galaxy. The hard thing to convey in Dune is how accomplished and intelligent everyone is. Almost everyone in the story is like 80+ years old and have IQs of like 140+.
@xTheUnderscorex
Жыл бұрын
It's not so much that they're intelligent, it's the level of self-control they have. Plenty of real people and characters in fiction are intelligent, but there's a kind hyper-conscious awareness in the characters in Dune which has a very unique feel, especially the ones trained in the schools of mental conditioning (mentats, bene gesserit, suk doctors etc.).

to be precise, the Bene Gesseritt do not have "powers" or Jedi like abilities. Everything they do is based on the Prana Bindu methods which is totally science based and they can control individual muscle fibers, organ functions and especially how to pitch their voice to command other people, something that a Bene Gesseritt can only do after they have "registered" the person to be commanded. Herbert was pretty clear on this that there is no magical powers like the Force in Dune.

Riding the sandworm doesn't make Paul "special" in the eyes of the Fremen-- it makes him human/worthy-to-live as all Fremen must ride a sandworm. It is literally a ride-or-die situation. I suspect I will come out of seeing Part 2 the same way I did coming out of seeing Part 1. It is quite good, however, overall, I still prefer David Lynch's original theatrical release version from 1984. For all the criticisms (mostly unjust and sometimes trivial) that movie had to endure, it never had a key criticism leveled against it -- by *anyone* -- that I *did* see one reviewer level at Part 1 of *this* newest version a while back. Specifically, that it "lacked heart." Lynch's movie, whatever else you might think of it, *had* heart! But here, we got Paul yelling at his father (which made no sense and seemed implausibly disrespectful), the Baron saying and doing almost nothing, Stilgar being far less charismatic or leaderlike, the music being much less memorable (deja vous to the parallel situation with Battlestar Galactica's music, again being far more memorable and inspiring in the original series), the weirding way making less sense for lack of its module technology (which I *am* aware wasn't in the novel, but which I argue should've been), and yes, an overall *lack* of heart. I'm not saying I'm not looking forward to seeing this movie. I'm not saying I won't enjoy it. But I *am* saying I doubt it'll change my mind as it was made upon seeing Part 1. It'll be good. But I'll still end up liking David's Lynch's work better.

Spoiler boy here makes it sound like spice is what gave the bene gesserit and the mentats their abilities. The spice gives the BG their ability to have their genetic memory awakened but their physical abilities are developed through rigorous training and 1,000’s of years of genetic manipulation. The mentats will use spice but their main drug is called saphu, a mental stimulant that stains their lips red. And are also products of training and the longevity of their school

I've heard the director described this half of the 1st Dune book as a war movie with a side of romance, but am also interested in how he'll address the over-arcing themes of religion as a tool of manipulation and the evil that men do in the name of good - and God. The only single thing that doesn't exactly work for me is that the voice in the books had also a little cringey reverse psychology gimmick to it. It wasn't a level 99 binding spell that just worked like that. During the scene where Paul and Jessica escape from the Harkonnens on the thopter, Jessica used her feminine charm combined with the voice to pit the soldiers in the vehicle against each other. It's not 100% accurate. It's a gorgeous movie nevertheless and it was delightful. Stuff like this usually bothers the fans a lot but people seemed to be positive about it in general. It might also be because we were waiting for a proper interpretation of Dune. It deserves much more that being a cheesy drama with cringe level 9000 acting. They did an awesome job so far with the remake.
