Great commentary. The movie did a good job interpreting the book. And the bits that stray from the book still work for this movie such as the ending with Chani riding away on the worm. I thought it was an odd ending until I realized they are setting us up for the next movie, which is the second book "Dune Messiah". Also, you two didn't mention Stilgar. He had an interesting character transformation from the beginning, where he was a friend and mentor to Paul, to the end where he became a fanatical follower.

The third movie will definitely take inspiration from Dune: Messiah, but it seems a bit hard to completely adapt. I wouldn't be surprised if we see the next movie taking place straight after the second one and skipping through Paul's Jihad.

The water of life that Paul took changed him for sure, it made him take on all the memories of his female ancestors along with all the pain and suffering that comes along with it and then helped reveal his power to see all (or most) of the possible futures. That is why he was afraid to go south because he knew there was no going back and that essentially he would be starting the darkest time line for humanity to survive. Similarly, Paul's sister Alia is able to see the future because she was exposed to the water of life and also because of her heritage-but it gets more complicated as to what possible futures they can see. Great discussion!
@ThePlotPals

Thank you! Would you say that Paul is following the best course of action with his turning the Fremen into his personal army fighting for power? Not having read the book (I KNOW I’M ON IT NOW), my interpretation would be that the water of life fills him with a false sense of right and wrong, that this fight for power is not gonna end with Paradise for the Fremen. But let me know what you think!
@calebanderson6205
6 ай бұрын
I've only read the first book so I'm by no means an expert! The Fremen are ultimately a tool for both Paul and his mother. I think Paul sincerely did not want to use them but felt he didn't have a choice because in the end it wasn't so much about right or wrong but survival. The Paradise part of it is interesting because the spice comes from the worms-if they do make Arrakis a paradise the worms will die (water kills them) and then there will be no more spice and no more prophets that can see the future.@@ThePlotPals

This was super interesting! 👏 I just heard film critic Mark Kermode say that sci-fi is about ideas and a good sci-fi film should be the starting point of a discussion. But I haven't heard people actually talk about the themes and ideas in this film yet, everyone is just talking about the film itself, the visuals and acting etc. Except you. Villeneuve said that although the book has a lot of different themes, it has spacing guild, mentats, ecology, all kinds of themes - but he chose in this adaptation to focus on the theme of religion used as means to control people. I think that worked, it's so powerful and at the center we see Paul and Chani - the film changes Chani's role from the book. In the book, we see the struggle inside Paul's mind about not following this path that will lead to horrible consequences. But the film uses Chani to show this - she is sad about losing the Paul that he loved, and losing the Fremen that she knew - the Fremen are now all about the war, with Paul as their leader. I thought the ending was really powerful and we saw through Chani the sadness of losing your innocence. In a way dune is a coming-of-age story, Paul grows up and loses his innocent self to the world of complicated conflicts. I really like how the ending is a total victory to the "good guys" except that we suddenly realize that they are not so good anymore. Anyway, great discussion, I will definitely be listening to your other episodes too!

I hope Villeneuve changes their relationship in Dune 2 (Part 2 is really 1.2) to be a mutually loving one. Because even though Irulan comes to love Paul in canon, it's fucking stupid to give room for the feeling of resentment to grow in your partner/spouse when it's totally avoidable. This is especially true in a setting of palace intrigue, where the loser is exiled at best and surgically turned into a broken spider pet at (not even) worst.

Wow very cool. I'd like to suggest a movie called Stigmata (1999) starring Patricia Arquette. You know what "stigmata" is yes? (it's like religious trials/tribulations that maybe a saint might go through.) This is a smaller movie. Um, it's a fun religious horror movie from the stylish 90s 🙂 that's my entire pitch. Um this, if you ever feel like watching a less serious movie. Okay so I have to follow that up with... But if you can only do the good titles, I'd actually suggest The Exorcist (1973) this might be too obvious right?... or the other is Rosemary's Baby (1968) this time from the stylish 60s 😊 For a classic black & white science fiction, The Thing From Another World (1951) by Howard Hawks
