Hope you get some time to rest. Sounds like a pretty crazy weekend. I’m personally a fan of the covers we have seen so far. Tyler Jacobsen used a lot more variety in color and some good open ended visual storytelling. We, as the viewer, are not only right in the middle of the action in these pieces, but at the beginning of the action, so it leaves a lot of room for your imagination to fill in what happens next. Venger and the other villains look menacing, but still keep some of the camp of their original designs. That a good introduction to the type of variety you get at the table and the more hamfisted, pulpy type adventures that 5E tells so well. Congrats on the early look at the PHB. I hope you can at least share some general impressions, depending on that NDA.

My personal take on Venger is that the 80's version of him is canon, campiness and all. But that version was simply Venger's simulacrum, formed when he was younger, less powerful, and less cunning and ruthless. Or the copy's less intimidating appearance and attitude could be blamed on a deliberate modification of the Simulacrum spell that allowed Venger to make his double come off as less of a threat. This would explain how he never seemed to grow in competence during the show's run, and he didn't just cast a couple Fireball spells to immediately destroy the heroes. It would also mean the simulacrum would be a decoy, while the real villain could put his real plans for world domination into motion, all while maintaining secrecy. This would also allow for two tiers of Venger to fight: a weaker simulacrum for a party of 8-10th level characters, and the real deal for a 16th level party. Just a thought.

with the animated show and the action figure characters already in the PHB, WotC/Hasbro is going for the classic characters/nostalgia angle again. I would be surprised if they keep the new artwork behind anything once you are allowed to go live. By the sounds of it, the new artwork is going to be one of the bigger selling points of the book. We've seen a dozen new images already. As for content creators getting the exclusives, if WotC is smart, they would parse out a new book would it be by chapter or concept to a small handful of creators. If they do it this way, I could see them putting in the contract that content creator of chapter 1 and prelude (if a prelude exists) would be allowed to publish on like Oct 3. Chapter 2 content creator than publishes on Oct 4 with Chapter 3 on Oct 5 and so on. The main reason is to limit any misunderstanding of the people watching if they watch the videos out of order and any possible spoiler alert. Admittedly, this is if the people watch the videos in order and on the day they are released which is a pretty big assumption\hope.

The half species are "gone" if the playtest didn't get changed. So I love the fact that the 80s cartoon is going to be featured in this. If they could do this for the cartoon they should have done this for the Dragonlance book with all the Chronicles characters and magic items ala Raistlin Majere Tanis Half Elven etc etc. That was a real missed opportunity. Perhaps for the anniversary they will revisit Dragonlance and do it justice. Edit: Nah, Venger was never Goofy. Great villain. Peter Cullen/Optimus Prime voiced his ass and seeing as I can do a decent Optimus, voicing Venger for my party will be fun as shit.

Venger looks like a Draconic bloodline Sorcerer Hes at least 14th level because of the wings and possibly 18th for the dread appearance.....but no sane sorc would spend 5 sorcery points on that. so somewhere between 14th and 18th level. Pretty simple and the son of a dungeon master. I wonder if they'll make Dungeon Master a subclass? Warduke has always been pretty simple. These are the new 2024 rules revision books. "One D&D" was a marketing term used to describe a wide swath of updated WoTC was making across rules, DNDBeyond, merchandising, film, video games, etc. However, the term confused a lot of fans who mistakenly thought that "One D&D" was like "Xbox One" - a new edition of D&D with a stupid name. They have since completely dropped this marketing term due to the confusion. But to be clear: The new rules revision is not and never was "One D&D" it was merely a part of the One D&D marketing push that encompassed a bunch of other stuff. The new DMG from this video is part of the rules revision, which is not a new edition. No new edition is planned for the foreseeable future, rather they are giving 5e a fresh coat of paint after 10 years of feedback. This is ALSO part of the 50th anniversary celebration, the rules updates were planned to coincide with it for marketing purposes.

Anyone that doesn't know who this dude in red is just sees a generic evil bad dude doing generic evil bad magic. The fact that he's a character from something at all doesn't even matter. Cover is cool, but content is what matters. I don't want to be treated like a 5yo with talk of safety cards, x-cards, how to be ethical when playing with friends, and how I'm a bad DM if I don't just let anyone join my table. Hopefully this focuses on the RULES and not the ETHICS. But I'm doubtful.
@Lord_zeel
4 ай бұрын
Oof, coming in the the hot takes here I see. The DMG is intended to be useful for any Dungeon Master - whether a veteran or a novice. It needs to have the full range of information from simple basics like "don't make your players uncomfortable" to more complex topics like "how to design a dungeon." There will almost certainly be a chapter devoted to safety tools and how to have an inclusive experience, because this is needed. There will also be everything else that the DMG has always had, and more beyond that. What's alarming though, is that you appear to have a PROBLEM with the DMG containing any information about safety tools, inclusivity, or "ethics" as you put it. This implies two things: First, that you don't consider these things worth while... which is highly problematic, I'm sure your players really appreciate that you don't give a rats ass about them. And second, that you appear to be under the misapprehension that buying a book contractually obligates you to read every page of the book.
@SkywalkerOne1977
4 ай бұрын
@@Lord_zeel Thanks for the response, but your issue with my comment seems to be "I'm right and you're wrong so you don't care about your players." Maybe make a better argument? Many systems don't have to tell their DMs to behave ethically and they are quite popular. And if you want to talk about "don't have to read everything in a book" then I'd ask what WOTC could have added in place of that kind of content, especially given how they artificially cut/add content to ensure a specific page count rather than just "what needs to be there". This can affect the cost of the product too. I'd also recommend you take a good look at your party and determine "Is this new player fitting in well". RPG tables excel when they take on some tribalism, because not every player works with every table. For example, I was running an Avernus campaign when a player joined my table and took issue with some of the devil content. Should I alter my entire game and existing player experience to cater to the new guy, or recommend him a different table and preserve what my 5 current players love? You don't have any right to tell me what is right or wrong at my table. Hm... maybe you should have ethics in your books...
@queenannsrevenge100
4 ай бұрын
@@SkywalkerOne1977in the situation you describe with one out of your five players being unhappy with the content at the table, what good advice would dictate is that you have a not aggressive conversation at the table to discuss it and give the player the opportunity to find a different group. I think the advice you THINK would be prevalent is not actually prevalent, and the use of things like x-cards is not trying to tell you HOW to run your game, it gives new DMs tools to run a game that won’t scare off a new player by being inconsiderate or rude. Are you saying that the presence of advice on safety controls and inclusivity WOULD lead to a worse product? What kind of advice to new and old players would you rather see rather than just being silent on how not to be unwelcoming to new players?
@Lord_zeel
4 ай бұрын
@@SkywalkerOne1977 Ah yes, mischaracterizing my comment is a much better argument. What I SAID, is "you appear to have a PROBLEM with the DMG containing any information about safety tools, inclusivity, or ethics" and that this is a problem. See, it's not a bad thing that you don't use safety tools, and if your group doesn't have anyone in it that feels excluded that's not bad either. As for "ethics" I can only guess. But you didn't say "I don't need these things in my game" you said that having them in the book AT ALL was treating you like a five year old. You have disdain for these ideas. You didn't just say you won't use them, you don't even want them included. And that indicates a certain attitude. It's that attitude I'm taking issue with. As for content they could have added instead, you're going off about a hypothetical. You have no idea what will be in the DMG, but we were promised it would be MORE than the old DMG. We know a couple of the new things, and we know they have mentioned a lot of the old things too. All the information we have so far points to the new DMG containing everything the old one has plus quite a bit extra. Your argument might be valid if the DMG had just come out and half the advice for worldbuilding had been removed and replaced with the things you don't like. But that's not the situation. Furthermore, your original comment wasn't "I'm worried they will cut the content I like for content I don't like" you were just going off on "ETHICS" as if that's a bad thing in and of itself. As for not every player is right for every table/campaign... yeah dude, no shit. And if the writers at WoTC are doing their jobs they will say as much in the book. You know, in the section you don't want them to include. See, you also seem to think that being "inclusive" means you have to just "let anyone join your table" but that's not the case. You also don't have to cater everything to every person. But that doesn't mean you should just do anything and everything that you want without considering the players. You can't play Avernus without devils, and if all the players in the group agreed to devils at the start and the new player doesn't like it then they're going to need to find a different group. But if you started the game with half the players being uncool with it and you just kept going anyway that would be on you. How to deal with these group dynamics, how to communicate expectations, how to handle unexpected situations where players don't feel comfortable... that's the sort of stuff that a lot of new (and old) DMs need some advice on. Why would that NOT be in the DMG?

Iuz would have been a better choice. But I'm in the real minority here.

@burgsrus For sure it would have been a better choice than action figures and animated cartoon char. But having on the cover Gygax characters turned NPCs would have been a proper salute to all DMs and to the craft.

The cartoon itself and the characters do nothing for me. I didn't grow up on it. The dude looks wacky and not worthy of a DMG cover

1. It is totally a new edition, WotC is avoiding the language to stop player drop off due to edition wars. 2. WotC has trained its whales to expect a collectors edition of each book drop so it’s not strange to see it at the start of this new edition.

Just drop the whole addition thing.. The edition topic is a thing because of these kind of comments Just get over it and move on.

It's not even remotely a new edition. It's the same ruleset, but redone classes and spells. That's not a new edition, it's a revision. There's no significant changes.

Well all backgrounds giving a feat at first level, all subclasses now starting at level 3, ability score improvements tied to backgrounds, the weapon mastery system, etc. Those are all pretty sizable changes in my opinion

I was there during the 3rd edition wars, I remove the piles of dead trees that littered the streets and the mass exodus to other game.

I could be mistaken, but I believe they walked back the "every subclass is tied to lvl 3" idea during one of the last few UAs.

I know I am the minority, but I absolutely hate the new covers. Very childish and way too cartoonish. Yuk! No thank you!

I really don't like the cartoon, so disappointed to see it all over the artwork
