Helll yeah! That book was the first book I read because I was sucked in, rather than my school making me read. And damn did it have an impact on me. I strangely read book 2 before book one, as that's what they had in the library at that moment. Just read it again last year and it still holds up as one of my favorite books of all time.

I like this layout a lot better than rectangular. Each player has their own side. The DM has a double side for extra room. You can see each player better, their faces, expressions. And The DM's corner is recessed, you're more central than everyone else... to move stuff on the TV. Octagon is great! Everyone is the same distance, giving each player equal prominence at the table.

Oh awesome! thanks for your work on that map... I just love it... and am moving to the Greyhawk setting for my 1e game right now! Yeah, there's a few minor details. The books to my right... have the upper shelf above them... so next time... I might cut out that overhang. I was using it for minis, but I might now sacrifice it... now that I build a mini shelf behind me. I wish the room were -slightly- larger... so that I could make the player cubbys deeper, and have a cutaway laptop option. There's not enough storage and play space for the players. I may... take out a wall and make it again with fancier wood to accomplish this!!!

Would you make the table any bigger if you had a larger room to work with? Just curious if your players feel like it's too crowded ever or it feels right?
@undertone_dj
Жыл бұрын
Good question And Beer. No... I probably wouldn't make it any bigger if there were more space. When we have 6 players and everyone has their own "side" of the octagon... it's pretty ergonomic for them. But yes... given our current space... it's definitely crowded. An ideal room would have about another 1.5 to 2 feet on each side of the table. When we're seated, everyone is comfortable and good. But if anyone wants to get up and go get a drink... there's next to no clearance behind players. They have to get up to let people out. So a bigger room, I would love.... but the table is killer as is. It's already a 60" tv embedded in it... much bigger than most digital tables I see (closer to 40"). and the size is already partially tied to "how far someone can reach to the center". Any bigger and there would be dead spots where players couldn't really reach the center of the table any more.

Here's the first of 2 videos showing off how it works, and how to replicate my setup: kzitem.info/news/bejne/s66iv6mBcXudm4o It works great! It's super fun to play with as the DM! You're right, they do get a mix of my voice and the pitch shifted character. The speakers are up quite a lot, so the volume coming through the speakers (quadraphonic) is much higher than my voice. It takes some getting used to, and iterating the levels of things to get right... but I'm not speaking very loud, and it comes through quite a lot. I suspect the speakers volumes are 2x - 3x louder than my voice in the room. I've set it up so I can speak fairly quietly, and get a good clean sound out of it.

@undertone_dj

Definitely! Having read/seen narratives from both the Gygax and Arnesons camp... I land on that he was short changed bigtime. He was pushed out, screwed out of money and diminished. When lawsuits are involved, one takes positions that demonize the other camp, and sometimes that becomes your reality. Areneson should rightfully be credited as the creator of Dungeons and Dragons in my mind. I have tons of love for Gygax, Mentzer, Hickman, Cask, and the whole damn lot of early TSR staff. But we are woefully underserved Arneson content. The blackmoor book, then four modules decades later... is not enough. We were withheld from his genius (and insanity). I really wish we'd gotten more from him under the TSR banner. I have large cloth printed maps of Blackmoor, Greyhawk, Ansalon, Forgotten Realms, Mystara. And by far, the Blackmoor map is my favorite... in all it's hand drawn wonky glory.

If memory served, I put the lower table at 26" high. We haven't had a player mention an issue yet. I'm happy to measure it for you, if you need that. A good buddy of mine is a tall fellow... so I thought about him in the design. Because the table is not bolted on to the "galvanized pipe legs"... the height is functionally adjustable. I can take out the top pipe, and stick an inch longer one on... if I know my buddy is coming to town!

Pine. I'd never woodworked before in my life... and at that moment, wood prices were very inflated. I figured I'd likely end up redoing parts of it (it's fairly modular), so I'd start with cheap pine... and upgrade as needed. It definitely gets little mars and dings in it easily because it's such a soft wood. But I figured for a starter newbie project... going cheap would be wise. I'm confident enough now that if I redid any bits, I'd go with a more expensive wood.

I ask for their character sheet, Pound the deceased stamp right in front of them... and pin their sheet to the ceiling. It's a two level table... the lower is 26", which is lower than a standard kitchen table. It's right over my thighs. The upper is about 8" higher... a bit higher than a standard kitchen table. I made sure that the DM is in more than the players so that I could easily reach minis. and we have a few "croup sticks" to push minis around. @@undertone_dj Oh, I'm not doubting it could hold it up, I'd be worried about it tipping over because the foot is too narrow. Too much weight on the edge, one person leaning on it too much, and boom. Done. Unless you mean you used that steel pipe contraption as extra support underneath, and I somehow missed that. That would definitely work. Also, I'm really digging the decorations and bookshelves. Can never have too many bookshelves.

@@whiterabbit75 13:24 Looks like he abandoned the pedestal design but I missed it if he made that clear.

@@nforne Yeah, I think that's what happened. I can't think of any other reason for him to even point it out.
Yup. I'm kicking myself for messing up that word so many times in a row in this video.

Lovely set up, but I had to skip through the video parts as the camera was moving way too fast.

An eight-sided table is an octagon, not a hexagon.

You are correct sir. I don't know why I kept calling it a hexagon. Mental brainfart!

hahaha. The dumb story of how that started... I went by Dave my whole childhood. Decades ago, at my first games job... there were a lot of emails. I used to type out David Johnson at the end of every email. As my emails increased... I got annoyed with typing it so much. So I shortened it to just dj. lower case. One of my buddies at worked noticed it, asked me about it... and said "yeah, I'm gunna call you dj from now on." It was a dumb joke, but is spread. pretty much everyone I worked with started calling me dj. When we were out at bars... they would introduce me as dj. And it just stuck. lol
