That opening story was great! You should seriously make videos that are just short story scripts/encounters. Love it - 7:30 I remember seeing this picture in a D&D monster book my friend had way back when I was in 5th grade😀 That picture does not do this animal justice, haha. Makes it look like it would be the size of a weasel or mongoose. . . Nope😋 - It would be really cool to make branch species where different ores/minerals are more easily found than gold. Get a cool Darwin type situation with the differences in regional variants. The standard Gold Aurumvorax - Silver Aurumvorax - Copper, so on, so on. Maybe the group goes on a quest as bodyguards to protect a nerdy Aurumvorax conservationist 😂

This thing kind of fulfills a similar roll as an owlbear for me. I.E. Something that plagues a local village, cutting off their access to the resource the village needs to thrive. For an owlbear this is a section of forest. For this creature it would be a mine. While definitely not the centerpiece of a campain, it makes a nice "Out of the frying pan and into the fire" problem with the PCs dealing with it only to find out they pissed off other forces that were profiting from it being in the area.

Know its a year old video, but thought I'd chime in and say that a few years ago I based a character named "Mezzik" around accidentally summoning one of these that had been sealed in a special scroll. Mezzik was a Kobold wizard's apprentice, and was rather impulsive with his exploration of "tricks", to the point where his master (a stubborn dwarf wizard who had settled nearby the cloudscale clan's tunnel warren) was petrified due to Mezzik's misinterpretation of a different scroll previously. Relatively undaunted by this, Mezzik proceeded to unroll and perform the ritual from yet another scroll he had very little understanding of, thinking that "trying another trick ought to do it!" A massive aurumvorax sprung forth from the scroll and knocked him unconscious, then it ravaged the majority of his clan's tunnels, leaving very few alive. This got Mezzik banished by the survivors, and finally sobered the gung-ho apprentice into realizing he should be maybe just a bit...perhaps a tad...a smidge more careful with "tricks". He set off on a quest to find more tricks to help un-petrify his master and bring honor to his clan so that he may rejoin them some day. The party met him telling this tale atop an empty keg the barkeep at (I forget the tavern's name) allowed him to use. He'd entertain the patrons with his silly tale each night, and each night the tale got more dramatic and embellished. Nobody's really sure which parts (if any) are true or if it's all made up, and Mezzik had taken such a liking to the mead that he developed a habit of getting absolutely trashed on two cups a night, so even he was beginning to wonder if it was all just a dream when he met the party there and they set off for adventure.

He wished that his little golden monster would be easy for him to handle and continue to befriend. The Efreet said "Granted. You are now the first of your kind." So, from then on... he was a natural (not cursed) wereaurumvorax. For some reason, that once beloved Dwarven king became a gold-hungry borderline tyrant. His only real friend became his pet aurumvorax which he found a way to turn immortal. My players never figured out that dwarf king was a subtle BBE because he kept giving them missions and offered a lot of services if they had the gold.

One reaction I thought was cool was depending on the metal the byproduct could be a form of salt and hydrogen gas. Imagine, a party of adventurers are tracking down an Aurumvorax harassing a Dwarven settlement. As the party tracks the beast’s tunnels they find strange salt droppings. They also noticed the deeper in the tunnels they go the higher their voices get. One of the party members decides to light their torch to get better look at the tracks, and BOOM! God forbid I ever get a bard to a high enough level, he'll prolly go around Awakening anything he thinks is interesting enough to be worth the time and money.

Throw in these when the party are loaded with gold from their latest dragon kill... Suggestably right after they finally, at great material (loot) cost managed to get away from the rust monsters.

Out ov the rusty gauntlet and into the acidic maw, eh?! That sounds like it would stressful & fun encounter(s) to run. (Edit:typo)

Ha. I went to school with a person named Kedron! Crazy, that seems like a really unique name so I never thought I would see another.

@@AJPickett yes one of my favorite videos of yours in the centaur it as a great opening story and I always like centaurs too bad they don't get much play in tv and movies like elves and dwarves.

I hadn't watched your videos in a while, but stopped for this one one a whim. The storytelling aspect added so much to the experience, and made me want to learn more about the aurumvorax.
