I realise these videos are on the older side now but I'm a new subscriber and pipe fettler and having spent 10+ years in the jewellery trade, I've handled a lot of Dunhill (and other premium) lighters so here's my twopenneth for what it's worth. Premium/high-end quality stuff is ALWAYS worth it IF you have the money to spend on it. You'll find the fit and finish, fine details and longevity of the product (whatever the product is) will be vastly superior to something cheaper, and as you said in this video, in terms of resale value/depreciation, higher end products generally hold their value for longer than the equivalent mass-market product. My personal thinking on this, and anything really, is that you should always buy the very best of what you can comfortably and happily afford at any given time, buy cheap and at some point, you're going to end up buying again.

A very late response to your video that I initially watched years ago. I recently bought a 1966 Dunhill shape 137f/t, group 4, shell briar, overstamped with 'NOT FOR SALE'. I've been after a Dunhill since I started smoking pipes just over 6 years ago and am very happy that I finally have one! It isn't necessarily better than any of my other pipes, but as a mark it has such a rich history. If the opportunity to own one arrises then take it!

I was lucky to find my first Dunnie at the car boot for £2,50 mint, and it did smoke amazingly good, I moved that on to bu the one I have now, and yes, same - only one, which is the blasted straight (cant recall the model) and the sale of the bargain enabled me to purchase that, still only paid about £80, and was in top nick, from an estate sale in the Netherlands, and that also is a bang on smoker, and more to what I wanted in the first place.

The worth of a thing depends on the opinion of the person using it. You nailed that perspective very well. I have eight Dunhills, all of them bought as vintage items. The most expensive one cost $220 USD. Mine smoke nicely. I admit it. I find they are worth what I paid for them. But I do not find mine to be deliriously wonderful. I have many other pipes that smoke at least as well as these Dunhills while costing less. I would never think to pay $700 to $1,000 USD for one. For that amount of money I could get a whole cache of Savinellis that would have me purring with contentment for a long time. - But, as we have agreed, that is just my two cents.

I was quite lucky in that my first smoking pipe was a Dunhill bruyere. I got it used on ebay from a lady who was selling her (desceased) husband's collection. It appeared to be of late 1970s vintage; a small bowl with a beautiful flat stem that I could clench very easily. It smoked very well and I enjoyed many a good bowl. Sadly it was damaged during a trip and is unusable now. I had some trouble adjusting to other pipe makes, but made the change eventually. I'd still like to get another Dunhill, preferably the exact same one, ha.

Interesting subject and I agree with your philosophy regarding pipe value. Personally I don´t think Dunhills are usually worth the prize. I have four, two really nice ones, all from the 60´s or older. None of them smokes perfect for me, funny enough! I had one more that was impossible for me to smoke. I sold it quite cheap and the new owner absolutely loves it! If I want a perfect smoking pipe, I´ll go for a Stanwell personally. I´ve had a number of them and they have all smoked perfect for me. But then of course, a new Stanwell can cost easily as much as a nice estate Dunhill. They are hardly in the middle range any longer. Im glad you´re happy with yours, it looks great! I don´t regret buying my Dunnies, thay are gorgeous pipes, but Im not buying any more of them. Take care! Emil

There‘s talk that those made in recent years are not as good as the older models. Estate pipes seem to get good press from users, more reasonably price and the quality is there. There are a lot of good competitors out there today, both the factory category and the small, artisan pipemakers who give you a lot if pipe for a reasonable price, say $150 or so. There are some newer entrants from Poland, Ukraine and other countries offering a quite good pipe for $30-70 plus some smaller pipemakers also have pipes in or near this range. Is it the pipe, or is it the name? I agree, its nice to show a friend you have a Dunhill just like a Maserati or a Rolex. So its maybe about style and brand, less about function or even quality perhaps. The name Dunhill is certainly a legend!

I have over 20. I guess that would make me a fanboy? I am a Dead Root fan. I haven't had any problems with any. I must be lucky? I am a pipe smoker. To me, my dunhills are workhorses. I don’t have to think when I want to smoke. I grab a pipe and get to smoking. When you think of a pipe, or the definition of a pipe, what picture comes to mind? Savinelli ?111ks?No-And you can thank dunhill for that. Dunhill's classic shape chart, and traditional style has been cherished by pipe smokers for 100 years.. If they weren’t doing it correctly , they would not be around. Mind you, I have danish pipes that I love too, but let me tell you, I have wasted more money on experimenting with different artisans. It was always something...from the weight not being right to the bit not being comfortable. Sorry, but most Dunhill haters hate because of the price point. In 20 years of pipe smoking, I would rather spend my money on one good pipe instead of 10 cheap pipes. You are not paying for a name, You are paying for a Dunhill- By the way... Toking Tommy gives it to you straight and is one of the few I respect as a pipe smoker. New pipe smokers need to watch all his vids and learn.

Funnily enough, I've had two, the one in this video was the better smoker of the two but I ended up selling both on. It wasn't an issue of quality as such, I just no longer cared much for them. I think the newer ones aren't in the same league as the older ones from what I've heard, but to be honest, for the price of a new Dunhill I could get a new pipe, a new outfit and have a few nights down the pub, which these days is preferable haha. Allow me to explain, when I say cheap I’m talking cheaply made as opposed to affordable. Some of the more affordable pipes are great and then some just aren’t; they can be poorly finished, off drilled or full of fills. Dunhill have the reputation of quality and the point of the video was to explore if this reputation happens to be true or not. I concluded that it was true. That’s not to say that I would pay anywhere near $500 for a Dunhill though - not a chance. The one in the video only cost me £85 and since the video was made I’ve actually sold it on and currently don’t have any Dunhill pipes in my collection. I agree that some of the best pipes around are Savinelli, they represent excellent value for money as do Neerup and Northern Briar pipes (both of which I also prefer over Dunhill). Thanks for watching and take care, Tommy
