Brave effort from these 2 men to sit there and talk about this. Well done to Garry and Jason for this. Outstanding from the both of you.

Yes its sad and tragic but lets not go overboard with our reactions. The golden fist was a comedy award part of who spud was. There is no doubt backman need their own award just like every other team sport has. However There are far better backman to name it after then spud. Im sure he would think the same way.

Perhaps it's inappropriate to speculate, but from all I'm hearing I wonder if Spud had bipolar. Such extremes of manic, high behaviour; the disorganised language of his texts; the gambling; and then the other end of it. I know I shouldn't speculate, but I say this to discourage people from speculating that it was straightforward depression that caused this.

I had a close friend who was always the life of the party a character larger than life and always “On” in public. Because I knew him better than most I did see his dark moods. I was 2 states away when he took his life. When I look back I now see that his many friends and there were many fed off his always on energy as he did theirs. I think my generation (71 yo) and perhaps Gary and Jason’s think we are taking care of each other, but, I think we do not get to the depths of maybe understanding mental illness as today’s generation, who air their problems coping without fear. I’m trying to be as sensitive as I can here, however I think the blokey culture of the older generations can learn a lot from the younger generation in dealing with mental illness. RIP Danny Frawley and my best wishes his family and close friends... hope I did not offend anyone with my comment

I think people like Danny (and myself) are just more emotional, for good AND for bad.... it can be very good for making other people feel good but it can be very bad when other people who just don't understand the depth of emotion, and it can be painfully embarrassing.... it feels very raw, like a huge open wound, not very macho but it comes from a place of love.

Dr. Weird it’s a very complex subject and I believe like Jason Dunstall almost impossible to understand. I do hope Danny’s death does not result in “ Very sad, but life goes on “ and the subject is swept under the carpet until the next tragedy occurs. Again I’m not trying to upset anyone it’s just that Danny was such an enormous character hopefully his real legacy will be to encourage us all to discuss what in the human condition can lead us to take such tragic action. I don’t know the answer...again RIP DANNY

We need to tell people how much we care for them and how much they are valued to us all, whilst they are still here. There is still too little of that done even in these days of more ‘awareness’. This is a sensitive, loving and poignant testament to a great and unique man, sincere thoughts to family, friends and all of you guys that were closest to Spud. The football world and indeed the entire community is now that much the poorer. RIP Spud.

I have an ex, my 16 year old daughter and my brother in law all have depression and mental health issues, and because I’ve never had it I don’t understand it either, I don’t get how someone who contemplates suicide or goes thru with it doesn’t stop to think how selfish it is for the ones who love you are the ones who suffer most, it’s a permanent solution to a short term problem, I just can’t understand the mindset

It's a shame he couldn't feel/absorb the love and support from his family and social groups.. I really feel sorry for his loved ones..... Spud's given them an absolute life sentence....They're gonna have to remember day to day, especially on milestone days like birthdays and holiday periods..... Whether your struggling or not.... Spud decided the land of the living wasn't worth it anymore... What a crazy disease, where someone like spud Frawley with all his advantages/opportunities/blessings ( 3 daughters, wife, great AFL community, earning a living doing something your passionate about instead of slaving the 9-5 like most of us ) Maybe he didn't love others as much as others loved him. A selfish act really... Sometimes we don't live our lives for ourselves, our lives are meant to be lived for others.... especially our family members... A sad story, but a cop out nonetheless.
